   AUNT BESSIE CARNAHAN

   Bessie Rae Carnahan, 107, died at 10:45 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 1997,
at Park Plaza Nursing Center in San Angelo. Administrator Paul Rabb
said that Mrs. Carnahan was the oldest resident that he had ever had
   in Park Plaza.

She was born Sept. 7, 1889, near Tenaha in Shelby County, Texas, the
second child of Emma Humphries and George Anson Hayden. On Sept. 2,
1911, she married David S. Carnahan, a Spanish-American War veteran,
in Center, Texas. They lived in various places in Texas and Oklahoma
(Aunt Bessie's favorites were San Antonio and Oklahoma City) and in
   Kent, Ohio.

After Uncle Dee died in 1937, Aunt Bessie lived in Oklahoma City until
1958. Then she moved to Wichita Falls, Texas. Left alone after the
sister with whom she lived there died in 1964, she became ``Aunt
Bessie'' to the neighborhood, adults as well as children. When she
became afraid to continue living alone at age 95 she went to Mertzon
where she had a niece and a grand-niece. There she was ``Aunt Bessie''
   to everyone she met.

By July 1989 she needed more care than a companion or family could
give, so in August she moved into the nursing home. Just before her
100th birthday, she suffered a spontaneous fracture of the spine.
Faraway guests were already on the road to come help her celebrate the
``Big 100,'' so the party went on without the guest of honor. At
Shannon Hospital the caring staff had a birthday party in her room
while the big celebration went on across town. About four months later
there was another spontaneous fracture, this time of the right hip, so
   ended her mobility.

Aunt Bessie was preceded in death by her 5-day-old daughter, Rae, her
husband, five brothers, two sisters, four nephews, one niece and one
grand-nephew. She is survived by six nieces, Mary Elizabeth Hayes of
Dallas, Lucy Brim of San Angelo, Dixie DeSalvo of Harvey, La., Jen
Brennion and husband, Dutch, of Longview, Texas, Janie Creech of
Alexandria, Va., and Emily Viskozki and husband, Ron, of Shreveport,
La.; and a sister-in-law, Ula Hayden of Tenaha, Texas. Also surviving
are nine grand-nephews, seven grand-nieces, other relatives, many good
friends and the special friend of her last years, roommate Lucille
   Lynch.

Our special thanks for her good care go to the administrators and
staff of Park Plaza Nursing Center and to her personal physician, Dr.
   Viki Forlano.

Service will be at at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Ramah Baptist
Church in Tenaha, Texas. The Rev. Ernest Elliott of the United
Methodist Church of Tenaha, where she was a member, will officiate
assisted by the Rev. William Perry of Ramah Baptist Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Gutierrez Funeral Chapels of
