Alvin A. Thomas Sr.
Alvin A. "Spud" Thomas Sr., 86, of Amarillo, died Thursday, March 25,
1999, in Denton.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery
with the Rev. Richard Bales of First United Methodist Church in Canyon
officiating. Arrangements are by BlackburnShaw Funeral Directors,
Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street.
Mr. Thomas was born in Memphis and moved to Amarillo in 1946. He was
involved in the trucking industry all of his adult life.
Mr. Thomas started Thomas Cartage Co., which was the beginning of
Thomas Cartage Inc. In 1976, he retired after the sale of the company.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Amarillo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 1990.
Survivors include two sons, Alvin A. "Tommy" Thomas Jr. of Amarillo
and Joel William Thomas of Patzcuaro, Mexico; a daughter, Mary Lynn
Beaty of Aubrey; a brother, James H. Thomas of Weslaco; two sisters,
Mrs. R.E. Carder of Carlsbad, N.M., and Amilda Thomas of McAllen;
seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 p.m. today at the
funeral home, and suggest memorials be to a favorite charity.
Melinda Hale
Melinda Hale, 29, of Amarillo, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral
Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street, with Jay
Roberson, pastor of Liberty Church, officiating.
Ms. Hale was born in Fort Worth and moved to Pampa when she was 3. In
1988, she graduated from Pampa High School and had lived in Amarillo
for 11 years. She was employed as a receptionist for the Amarillo Ear,
Nose, and Throat Associates and was a member of the PPH Support Group.
Survivors include her parents, Linda and Hoss Gilmer of the home, and
Allen and Barbara Richter of Amarillo; a brother, Jeffrey Richter of
Amarillo; and her grandparents, David and Billie Killough of
Howardwick and Erwin Richter of Pampa.
The family will be at 1905 Cherry.
Junior Leon Heath
Junior Leon Heath, 74, of Amarillo, died Thursday, March 25, 1999.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Paramount Baptist Church with
Dr. Gil Lain, pastor, officiating. Burial with military rites by the
Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 26 will be in Memorial Park
Cemetery by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage.
Mr. Heath was born in Broken Arrow, Okla., and moved to Amarillo 44
years ago from San Perlita. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. In
1998, he retired after 47 years with Amarillo Road Construction. He
was a member of Second Baptist Church.
He married Pauline Moran in 1948 at Harlingen.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Shirley Ann Franks of Del
City, Okla.; three sons, Robert Lee "Bobby" Heath of Montevallo, Ala.,
Michael Leon Heath and Homer Gene Heath, both of Amarillo; four
brothers, W.L. Heath of Washburn, Monroe Heath of Slaton, Raymond
"Tex" Heath of Amarillo and Chester Heath of Collinsville; three
sisters, Lavada Jones and Mildred White, both of Decatur, and Marie
Malone of Shawnee, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and a greatgrandchild.
The family will be at 1604 S. Travis and suggest memorials be to the
American Heart Association.
Michelle Lynn Turrell
Michelle Lynn Turrell, 18, a former Amarillo resident, of Chicago,
died Saturday, March 13, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Elmhurst Cemetery in
Guymon, Okla., with Jim Jameson officiating. Arrangements are by
Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle.
Miss Turrell was born in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was a student and
a member of the United Methodist Church in Imperial, Calif.
Survivors include a sister, Christi Dawn Turrell of Phoenix; and an
aunt, Sharon Hobbs Melton of Amarillo.
Cecelia Evelyn Benson
Cecelia Evelyn Benson, 82, of Amarillo, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church
with Charles Meyer, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Llano Cemetery
by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle.
Mrs. Benson was born in Ironwood, Mich., and had lived in Amarillo
since 1947. She worked as a registered nurse in Eau Claire, Wis., and
was a member of the TSPE Auxiliary. She was a member of Beautiful
Savior Lutheran Church.
She married Irwin Amos Benson in 1937 at Eau Claire. He died in 1987.
Survivors include two sisters, Lucille Caucutt and Juanita "Babe"
Resech, both of Eau Claire; six nephews; and two nieces.
The family suggests memorials be to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church,
3500 S. Bowie, Amarillo, TX 79109.
Mary E. Colvin Cox
Mary E. Colvin Cox, 62, of Amarillo, died Thursday, March 25, 1999.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Paramount Terrace Christian
Church with the Rev. Roy S. Wheeler and the Rev. Bob Schroeder
officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral
Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Mrs. Cox was born in Amarillo and was a lifelong resident. Since 1985,
she had taught second grade at Will Rogers Elementary. Her 20 years as
a teacher included teaching at Paramount Terrace Elementary and
Storyland Pre-school. She was a member of Paramount Terrace Christian
Church, Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and was a volunteer for Camp Cactus.
She married James Kenneth Cox in 1961 at Amarillo.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Karol Cox Cargill of Fort
Worth; two sons, Kevin Cox of Amarillo and Kerry Cox of Houston; two
brothers, Lloyd Colvin and Bill Colvin, both of Amarillo; and three
grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Camp Cactus, P.O. Box 30758,
Amarillo, TX 79120-0758.
Walter E. Benedict
Walter E. Benedict, 82, of Duluth, Minn., died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Memorial services are planned for a later date. Cremation and
arrangements are by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes.
Mr. Benedict was born in Ashland, Wis. He was a retired house painter,
a member of the Painters Union and a disabled veteran of World War II.
He served in the Army.
Survivors include a son, Warren E. Benedict of Burnsville, Minn.; a
daughter, Barbara A. Neubert of Duluth; a brother, John Benedict Jr.
of Seattle; two sisters, Dorothy Poliski and Leona Hunt, both of Yuma,
Ariz.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Lee Ora Bates
Lee Ora Bates, 100, of Amarillo, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Llano Cemetery with the
Rev. Bill Fitzgerald officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral
Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Mrs. Bates was born in Prosper and attended West Texas State Normal
School. She was a longtime member of San Jacinto United Methodist
Church and a homemaker.
She married Boyd R. Bates in 1920 at Denver. She was preceded in death
by her husband in 1984 and by a son, Neil P. Bates, in 1997.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth E. Bates of Bellevue, Wash.,
Carroll E. Bates of Seattle and Wayne G. Bates of Amarillo; 10
grandchildren; and 10 greatgrandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Crown of Texas Hospice, 1000 S.
Jefferson, Amarillo, TX 79101.
Edith A. Smith
Edith A. Smith, 83, of Amarillo, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Wheeler Cemetery with
Dr. Howard Batson, senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Amarillo,
officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors,
2820 Virginia Circle.
Mrs. Smith was born in Wheeler and had lived in Amarillo for 51 years.
She grew up in Wheeler and graduated as salutatorian of Wheeler High
School. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from West
Texas State Teachers College.
Mrs. Smith served as recreational director for the USO-Red Cross
during World War II. She taught at Darrouzett, Lovington, Horace Mann,
Palo Duro and Tascosa High Schools. She was the first English
coordinator at Region 16 PESO and retired in 1978 as coordinator of
English for the Amarillo Independent School District.
Mrs. Smith served on the state textbook committee. She was a member of
First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Nell Prowell of Amarillo; four sisters,
Vergie Nell Guynes of Borger, Gertrude Lilly Green of Wichita Falls,
Robbie Joan Thornberry of Claude and Barbara Jean Bates of Amarillo;
two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will be at 2305 Julian and suggest memorials be to First
Baptist Church or a favorite charity.
Jack R. McBroom
Jack R. McBroom, 74, of Amarillo, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Christian Heritage Church with
the Rev. Lloyd Burd officiating. Entombment will be in Memorial Park
Cemetery by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St.
Mr. McBroom was born in Amarillo and was a plasterer for Art Craft
Plastering Co. until his retirement in 1984. He served with the Army
during World War II and was a member of First Pentecostal Church of
God.
Survivors include three daughters, Jackie Mayfield and Bobbie Ross,
both of Amarillo, and Dannie Duckworth of Elgin; a brother, Jim
McBroom of Amarillo; two sisters, Estelle Davis of Hereford and Betty
Patton of Amarillo; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and
two great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Christian Heritage Church, 900 S.

Clarence L. Winters
Clarence L. Winters, 89, of Amarillo, died Thursday, March 25, 1999.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Memorial Park Funeral Home
Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, with the Rev. J. Alan Ford
of Southwest Baptist Church and Eddie Johnson of Antioch Baptist
Missionary Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park
Cemetery.
Mr. Winters was born in Capron, Okla., and moved to Amarillo in 1917.
He was a farmer, and a member of Southwest Baptist Church.
He married Vesta Winters in 1933.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Winters and Fred Winters, both of
Amarillo; a brother, Charlie Winters of Amarillo; four grandchildren;
and 10 greatgrandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Faith City Mission or to Southwest
Baptist Church.
Irville C. Phillips
Irville C. Phillips, 84, of Arizona City, Ariz., formerly of Amarillo,
died Thursday, March 25, 1999, in Casa Grande, Ariz.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Plainview Cemetery with
the Rev. L.R. Green officiating. Arrangements are by Memorial Park
Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40.
Mr. Phillips was born in Temple, Okla., and was a school janitor prior
to his retirement. He was a member of the First Assembly of God in
Amarillo.
His wife, Jewell, died in 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Kelly of Albuquerque, N.M.; two
sons, Charles Phillips of Oracle and Jerry Sipes of Arizona City; a
brother, G.L. of San Pedro, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; 12
greatgrandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to the American Cancer Society.

Ronnie Gresham
McALLEN - Ronnie Gresham, 41, a former longtime Hereford resident,
died Thursday, March 25, 1999.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Avenue Baptist Church with
the Rev. Jim Bulin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn
Memorial Park at Hereford. Arrangements are by Gililland-Watson
Funeral Home of Hereford.
Mr. Gresham was born in Hereford. He graduated from Hereford High
School in 1975 and served in the Navy. He worked as a diesel mechanic
and was a Baptist.
Survivors include a son, Brandon Claton Gresham of Hereford; a
daughter, Kari Sue Gresham of Hereford; his parents Charles and Betty
Gresham of Hereford; a brother, James Douglas Gresham of Dumas; two
sisters, Caryn Elliott of Denver, and Joy Bradley of Repton, Ala.; and
grandmother, Inez McWilliams of Muleshoe.
Carolina Gonzalez
PLAINVIEW - Carolina Gonzalez, 67, died Thursday, March 25, 1999.
Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic
Church with the Rev. Jerry Kinney, pastor, officiating. Burial was in
Parklawn Memorial Gardens by Lemmons Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gonzalez was born in Taft and grew up in Mexico. She moved to
Plainview after her marriage. She was a member of Our Lady of
Guadalupe Catholic Church and the Crucillistas.
She married Manuel Gonzalez in 1949 at Bustamente, Mexico. She was
preceded in death by a daughter, Yolanda Gonzalez, in 1953.
Survivors include her husband; six daughters, LaLa Herrera of Austin,
Tila Hernandez of Dallas, Carolina Salazar of San Marcos and Annette
Gutierrez, Betty Rangel and Elva Morales, all of Plainview; a son,
George Gonzalez of Plainview; a brother, Avelino Cisneros of Laredo;
two sisters, Guadalupe Limon of Laredo and Alicia Cervantez of Valle
Hermoso, Mexico; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Anselmo DeLa Cruz
PLAINVIEW - Anselmo DeLa Cruz, 78, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. today in Lemmons Funeral Home
Memorial Chapel. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart
Catholic Church with the Rev. Elbert A. Fadallan, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
Mr. DeLa Cruz was born in Gregory and raised in Hondo. In 1956, he
moved to Plainview where he was a truck driver. He was a member of
Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He married Antonia Zapata in 1940 at Lamesa. He was preceded in death
by a son, Ernesto DeLa Cruz.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary Martinez and Becky
Jimenez, both of Plainview; three sons, Santos DeLa Cruz and Robert
DeLa Cruz, both of Plainview, and Anselmo DeLa Cruz Jr., of Hondo; 14
grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Ruth Callaway
SUDAN - Ruth Callaway, 84, died Thursday, March 25, 1999.
Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church of Sudan
with the Rev. Cliff Hargrove, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Sudan
Cemetery by Ellis Funeral Home.
Mrs. Callaway was born in Winters and had lived in Sudan since 1925.
She was an employee of local nursing homes and in private health care
for several years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of
Sudan.
She married Ocie Callaway in 1935 at Clovis, N.M. He died in 1949.
Survivors include a son, Benny Wayne Callaway of Muleshoe; two
daughters, Virginia Harlin of Sudan and Lavelle Hill of Littlefield;
two sisters, Bennie Perry of Monahans and Gladys Allen of Artesia,
N.M.; a brother, C.K. Pierce of Bula; six grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Sudan EMS of Sudan, TX.
Ruth Lackey
MULESHOE - Ruth Lackey, 87, died Thursday, March 25, 1999.
Services were at 3 p.m. Saturday in Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with the
Rev. Jimmy Lowe, former minister of New Covenant Church, officiating.
Burial was in Bailey County Cemetery.
Mrs. Lackey was born in Lawton, Okla., and had been a Muleshoe
resident since 1946. She was a homemaker and member of New Covenant
Church.
She married Walter Durwood Lackey in 1931 at Lovington, N.M. She was
preceded in death by her husband in 1980 and by a daughter, Norma Ruth
Lackey, in 1954.
Survivors include a son, Walter Wayne Lackey of Muleshoe; a daughter,
Margaret Towner of Marble Falls; a brother, Robert Reeder of Lawton;
five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.

Evart Adams
HALE CENTER - Evart "Cowboy" Adams, 98, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church in
Hale Center with the Rev. Ken Rowland, pastor, officiating. Burial was
in Center Plains Cemetery in Cotton Center by Freeman-Abell Funeral
Home.
Mr. Adams was born in Wheeler County. A veteran of World War I, he was
a Navy pilot. For several years he was recognized at the local
Veterans Day service as the only living World War I veteran of Hale
Center.
In 1923, he moved to Hale Center to teach school and coach football.
He played football at West Texas State and worked on several ranches,
including the 6666 Ranch. He was a member of the First United
Methodist Church and the American Legion.
He married Lola Mae Jetton in 1927 at Hale Center. He was preceded in
death by his wife in 1982 and by a son, James, in 1975.
Survivors include a daughter, Trula Palmer of Odessa; four
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to First United Methodist Church of
Hale Center, Hale Center Senior Citizens or Hale Center Library.
Willie E. Gilman Wallis
SPEARMAN - Willie E. Gilman Wallis, 95, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the
Rev. Rick Patrick officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery by
Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Mrs. Wallis was born in Llano and had lived in the area for 48 years
after moving from Wheeler. She was employed by Spearman schools and
was the first employee of the school to retire with 20 years of
service. She was a member of Golden Spread Senior Citizens, First
Baptist Church, Tel Sunday school class, and was an intercessor for
First Baptist Church Prayer Ministry.
She married John William "Bill" Wallis in 1924. He died in 1957. She
was also preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Mae, and by a
stillborn son.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Thomas of Spearman; a sister,
Bertha Wilbanks of Corpus Christi; a brother, Roy Lee Gilman of
Orlando, Fla.; four grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Golden Spread Center, Box 817,
Spearman, TX 79081.
Verna Merle O'Connor
PLAINVIEW - Verna Merle O'Connor, 89, died Saturday, March 27, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Plainview Memorial Park
with the Rev. Ed Norris, retired Baptist preacher of Silverton,
officiating. Arrangements are by Lemons Funeral Home.
Mrs. O'Connor was born in Thornton, farmed for several years in the
Finney Community and moved to Plainview in 1965.
Her husband, Jack O'Connor, died in 1975.
Survivors include a brother, Rex D. Rogers of Vigo Park.
Mary Ruth Morris
MOBEETIE - Mary Ruth Morris, 85, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the
Revs. Dinzel Leonard, pastor, and Gary Jahnel, pastor of First United
Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Mobeetie Cemetery by
Wright Funeral Home of Wheeler.
Mrs. Morris was born in Collingsworth County, and in 1923 moved from
Wellington to Mobeetie, where she attended school. She was employed at
the telephone office from 1926 until 1930 and served as the
postmistress at the Mobeetie Post Office from 1953 until 1975. She was
a member of the First United Methodist Church.
She married Walter William Morris in 1930. He died in 1991.
Survivors include a son, Gary Raymond Morris of Mobeetie; six sisters,
Irene Adams of Canadian, Okla., Jessie Peterson of Azle, Frances
Slutzky of New Hampshire, Ella Trout of Mobeetie, Dortha Beck of
Lefors and Jimmie McBain of Columbia, Mo.
The family suggests memorials be to Mobeetie Volunteer Fire
Department, or to the Mobeetie Cemetery Association.
Antonia Ayala Esqueda
HEREFORD - Antonia Ayala Esqueda, 88, died Saturday, March 27, 1999.
Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. today in San Jose Catholic Church.
Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday in San Jose Catholic
Church with the Revs. Domingo Castillo officiating and Antonia
Gonzales assisting. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery by
Parkside Chapel Funeral Home.
Mrs. Esqueda was born in Hermanas Cuagila, Mexico, and had lived in
Hereford for over 36 years. She was a member of the San Jose Catholic
Church and of the Cursillista. She moved to Amarillo in 1984.
She married Urbano Esqueda in 1929. He died in 1983.
Survivors include three sons, Noel Esqueda, Ignacio Esqueda, and
Jacinto Esqueda, all of Hereford; five daughters, Selda Esqueda of
Amarillo, Vel Cantu of Hereford, Pauline De La Fuente of Lubbock,
Modesta Malagon of San Marcus and Susie Diaz of San Antonio; 34
grandchildren; 81 great-grandchildren; and nine
great-great-grandchildren.
Joey Burd
DUMAS - Joey Burd, 84, died Saturday, March 27, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Northlawn Memorial Gardens with
the Rev. H.L. Stevens, retired Assembly of God minister, officiating.
Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors.
Mrs. Burd was born in New Castle, Ind., had lived in Dumas since 1945
and served in the Woman's Auxiliary Corps.
She married Loyal E. Burd in 1943. He died in 1979.
Memorials should be to a favorite charity.
Don Wells Anderson
CANADIAN - Don Wells Anderson, 59, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today in Edith Ford Memorial
Cemetery with the Rev. Bradley Walker, pastor of First Presbyterian
Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Stickley-Hill Funeral
Directors.
Mr. Anderson was born in Cordell, Okla., and had been a life-long
resident of Canadian. He graduated from Canadian High School and from
Okmulgee Tech in Okmulgee, Okla. He was owner/operator of an auto body
shop, assisted his family in their ranching operations and was a
member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his mother, Betty Anderson Platt of Amarillo; and
two brothers, Jim Bill Anderson of Canadian and Joe Anderson of
Perryton.

Paul B. Sangster
SKELLYTOWN - Paul B. Sangster, 69, died Saturday, March 27, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral
Directors Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Robert Kelley, pastor of White
Deer United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memory
Gardens Cemetery with graveside rites by ISOM Masonic Lodge No. 1242
AF&AM.
Mr. Sangster was born in Earlsboro, Okla., and moved to Skellytown
from Borger in 1953. He owned and operated J&P Construction and P.B.
Sangster Electric until his retirement in 1991. He served in the armed
forces and was a member of ISOM Masonic Lodge No. 1242 AF&AM in
Borger, and of the Scottish Rite in El Paso.
He married Darline Cother Lorenzen in 1978.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Joe W. Sangster of Texline; three

Thelma Mae Flinchum
PAMPA - Thelma Mae Flinchum, 90, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Fairview Cemetery with
the Rev. Jim Teeter, pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church,
officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
Mrs. Flinchum was born in Creek County, Okla., and moved to Pampa in
1929. She was a homemaker and a member of Mary Ellen and Harvester
Church of Christ.
She married Teddy Floyde Flinchum in 1929. He died in 1981. She was
also preceded in death by a son, Eugene Flinchum, in 1987.
Survivors include a son, Alton Flinchum of Oklahoma City; a brother,
Marvin Wilson of Sapulpa, Okla.; a sister, Marie Wilson Applegate of
Sand Springs, Okla.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The family suggests memorials be to the American Heart Association.

ODESSA - Warren L. Bishop, 50, died Thursday, March 25, 1999.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today in St. Andrews Cumberland

Mr. Bishop was born in Oklahoma City and raised in Borger, where he
graduated from high school. In 1972, he graduated from West Texas
State University with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
Until 1991, Mr. Bishop worked for HSA Mortgage and A-1 Homes. He was a
member of St. Andrews Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Promise
Keepers.
He married Joan Friend in 1969.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Brent Bishop of Seattle; a
daughter, Kimberly Bishop of Odessa; his father, A.L. Bishop of Royce
City; his stepfather, Lloyd McDonald of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two
sisters, Wilma Parker of Houston and Lorraine McDonald of Amarillo;
and his brother, Paul McDonald of Springfield, Mo.

Johnny Alfred Cleveland
WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Johnny Alfred Cleveland, 59, died Thursday, March
25, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Sweeney-Phillips and Holden Funeral Home of
Warrensburg.
Mr. Cleveland was born in Clayton, N.M. He graduated from high school
in Dumas, Texas, and attended the University of Wichita on a
basketball scholarship. He worked in banking, sales and real estate.
He married Helen Kuper in 1964 at Santa Maria, Calif.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Allen Cleveland of Siloam
Springs, Ark.; a daughter, Bobbie Michelle Wood of Gentry, Ark.; his
father, Eugene A. Cleveland of Dumas; a brother, Preston Cleveland of
Granbury, Texas; two sisters, Earlene Arrington of Borger, Texas, and
Judy L. Rice of Sunray, Texas; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. today at the
funeral home. They suggest memorials be to the Alzheimer's Foundation
and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Ray Munnerlyn
HILLTOP LAKES - Ray Munnerlyn, 74, died Saturday, March 20, 1999.
The family arranged private memorial services. The body was donated to
medical science with arrangements by Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan.
Mr. Munnerlyn was born in Ranger and raised in Ranger, Del Rio and
Victoria, where he graduated from high school. During World War II he
served in the Army as an aerial photographer. He graduated from Texas
A&M University in 1950 with a degree in petroleum engineering.
Mr. Munnerlyn was employed in the oil and gas fields in the Texas
panhandle and in Venezuela. He became division chief of the Bureau of
Mines in Amarillo and then was chief of the helium and gas division of
the Department of Interior in Washington, D.C., from 1974 until his
retirement in 1981. He then moved to Hilltop Lakes.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Lois; two daughters, Shuri
Wright of Austin and Beth Oates of Dallas; a sister, Doris Armstrong
of Leggett; two brothers, Bill Munnerlyn of Germany and Tom Munnerlyn
of Austin; five granddaughters; and two grandchildren.

John C. Knowles
LAKE CITY, FLA. - John C. "Tuffy" Knowles, 53, formerly of Amarillo,
died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. in Biggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with
the Rev. J.B. "Tank" Ogburn officiating, and Doyle Glover assisting.
Burial will be private.
Mr. Knowles was born in Palatka, Fla., and moved to Lake City from
Amarillo 1 1/2 years ago. He was a truck driver and a Baptist.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Knowles.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Kandy; three sons, Steven
Knowles of Lake City, and Robert Knowles and Michael Knowles, both of
Louisville; a brother, Charles "Marty" Knowles of Lake City; a sister,
Jeannie "Betty" Harkey of Crystal River, Fla.; and three
grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home in
Lake City.
Dr. Robert E. Bennett
SPICEWOOD - Dr. Robert E. Bennett, 78, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today in Cook-Walden Forest Oaks
Memorial Park with the Rev. Mike Dodson officiating. Arrangements are
by CookWalden Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
His wife, Hazel Bennett, preceded him in death.

Anifa L. Garcia
TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Anifa L. Garcia, 87, died Thursday, March 25, 1999.
Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. today in St. Anne's Catholic Church.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St.
Anne's Catholic Church by the Rev. John C. Daniel. Burial will be in
Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery by Dunn Funeral Home.
Mrs. Garcia was born in Garita and was a homemaker. She was a member
of St. Anne's Catholic Church, St. Anne's Blue Army, and of the El
Paso V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary No. 8919.
She married Lucio Garcia in 1938. He died in 1989. She was also
preceded in death by a son, Victor Garcia and by a grandson, A.J.
Moya.
Survivors include three daughters, Pauline Sanchez of Liberal, Kan.,
Ponce Napier of Greenwood, Ind., and Nolita Anaya of Tucumcari; four
sons, Jose Garcia of El Paso, Marcos Eloy Garcia of Palmetto, Ga., and
Gilbert Garcia and Horacio Garcia, both of Tucumcari; three brothers,
Pablo Lucero of Garita, Amado Lucero of Santa Fe, and Josefre Lucero
of Fort Collins, Colo.; 28 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren;
seven great-greatgrandchildren; and her niece and constant companion,
Polly Gallegos.
Visitation will be from today until time for funeral services Monday
at the funeral home.
Willie M. Williams
CLOVIS, N.M. - Willie M. Williams, 92, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Saturday with Dr. Herbert Bergstrom
officiating. Burial was in Mission Garden of Memories by Muffley
Funeral Home.
Mrs. Williams was born in Weatherford and moved to Clovis in 1929. She
was a homemaker and a member of Parkland Baptist Church.
Her husband, Oral Williams, preceded her in death.
Survivors include five sons, Paul Williams, Carl Williams, Don
Williams and Conny Joe Williams, all of Clovis, and Leon Williams of
Ruidoso, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Robert Joe Starkey
CLOVIS, N.M. - Robert Joe "Bob" Starkey, 79, died Friday, March 26,
1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First United Methodist Chapel
with Dr. Herbert Bergstrom officiating. Burial will be in Lawn Haven
Memorial Gardens by Steed-Todd Funeral Home.
Mr. Starkey was born in Bailey County, graduated from Muleshoe High
School in 1938, and attended Texas Tech University prior to entering
the military where he served with the Army Air Corps during World War
II. He moved to Clovis in 1945 and was owner and manager of Starkey
Packing Co. and Clovis Rendering Co.
He married Cleo Davis in 1942. She died in 1987. He married Nita B.
Chandler in 1989.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert D. Starkey of Mesquite
and John Eddie Starkey of Clovis; two daughters, Kay Allen and Jeanie
Starkey, both of Clovis; two stepdaughters, Bettye Lu Viddler and
Alice Bennett; a stepson, Fred Chandler; two brothers, Dr. John D.
Starkey of Eskota and Dr. Frank M. Starkey of Lawrence, Kan.; three
sisters, Kathleen Williams of Farmington, N.M., Eula Mullins of Idaho
Falls, Idaho, and Nina Brewer of Robert Lee; six grandchildren; and
six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. today at the funeral home,
and the family will be at 800 Oak in Clovis.
Delbert Jennings
CLOVIS, N.M. - Delbert Jennings, 80, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Grady Methodist Church with the
Rev. Roy Sloan officiating. Burial will be in Grady Cemetery, Grady,
N.M., by SteedTodd Funeral Home of Clovis.
Mr. Jennings was born in Kansas.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia; a son, Ronald Jennings; a
daughter, Janet Pacetti; a brother, Ray Jennings; three sisters,
Maxine Heard, Naomi Murphy and Charlotte LeVan; seven grandchildren;
and a number of great-grandchildren.
Bobbie Ted Roberts
CLOVIS, N.M. - Bobbie Ted Roberts, 58, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Lawn Haven Memorial
Gardens with the Rev. L.C. Camp officiating. Arrangements are by
Steed-Todd Funeral Home.
Mr. Roberts was born in Clovis and was a farmer and rancher north of
Melrose, N.M., in the Field Community.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Ruth Fain; two sons, Bobbie Ted
Roberts, Jr., of Melrose, and Steven Roberts of Clovis; two
stepchildren, Vickie Roberts of Texico, N.M., and Jerry Wimberly of
Clovis; two brothers, Bill Roberts of Melrose and Benny Thomlinson of
Lubbock; six grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

Monroe J. Adams
GUYMON, Okla. - Monroe J. Adams, 79, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Victory Memorial United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Chaffin officiating. Burial will
be in Elmhurst Cemetery by Bunch-Roberts Funeral Home.
Mr. Adams was born in Marble City, Okla., and lived in Leedey, Okla.,
where he worked for the M.K.T. Railroad. He spent another 20 years of
service after being transferred to Gate, Okla. He moved to Tyrone,
Okla., where he worked for the Tyrone and Liberal school system, and
later at the Southwest Medical Center in the maintenance department
until his retirement in 1992. He moved to Guymon in 1994 and attended
the Victory Memorial United Methodist Church where he was custodian.
He was a member of the No Man's Land Senior Citizen Center and of the
Senior Citizen Dance Club.
He married Dorothy Walker in 1938, and was preceded in death by a son,
Dwain Adams.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Eddie Adams of Henderson, Nev.,
and Donaven Adams of Guymon; a daughter, Marketta Kidwell of Guymon; a
brother, Albert Adams of Eufaula, Okla.; two sisters, Ina Mayo and
Darlene Dahlkey, both of Moore, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to No Man's Land Senior Citizen Dance
Club, or to the Victory Memorial United Methodist Bell Choir.
