Leonard E. Cash
PAMPA - Leonard E. Cash, 83, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral
Directors Colonial Chapel with Frankie L. Lemons, minister of
McCullough Street Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in
Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Mr. Cash was born in Pittsburg and moved to Pampa 60 years ago from
Graham. He was the owner of Leonard's Shine Parlor and a member of
McCullough Street Church of Christ.
He married Mildred Perry in 1937 at Sulphur Springs. He was preceded
in death by a son, Derrell Cash, in 1985.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Lena Henry, Margrette
Nickelberry and Claudette Deason, all of Pampa; three sons, Edward
Cash and Joe Cash, both of Pampa, and Larry Cash of Altadena, Calif.;
21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three
great-greatgrandchildren.
Robert R. Diaz
PAMPA - Robert R. Diaz, 57, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999.
Vigil will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral
Directors Colonial Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday
in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church by the Rev. John Valdez,
pastor. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Mr. Diaz was born in El Paso and had lived in Pampa since 1956. He
worked for E.D. Baker Construction Co., where he was a heavy equipment
operator for 10 years. He married Concha "Connie" Ramirez in 1958 at
Clayton, N.M. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ricky Diaz of Weatherford,
Okla., and Robert "Lenny" Diaz of Amarillo; a sister, Francisca Munoz
of El Paso; three grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
Keith Mizell
DUMAS - Keith Mizell, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Temple Baptist Church of Dumas
with the Rev. Jay McGaughy, pastor, officiating. Military rites will
be by American Legion Post No. 224. Burial will be in Northlawn
Cemetery by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St., Amarillo.
Mr. Mizell was born in Jennie Lind, Ark., and lived in Dumas most of
his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
He served in Normandy, Rhineland, Central Europe and Northern France.
In 1986, he retired after 34 years as an operator for Diamond
Shamrock. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
He married Virginia Boyette in Amarillo.
Survivors include his wife; a son, D. Lee Venable of Kearney, Neb.;
three daughters, Janice Stevenson of Dumas and Sherry Rawlins and
Joyce Shull, both of Amarillo; 11 grandchildren; and 21
great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. today until service time at the church.
Madie Ada Brown
CHILDRESS - Madie Ada Brown, 97, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Childress Cemetery with
the Rev. Johnny Robertson of First Methodist Church of Childress
officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Brown was born in Santa Anna and moved to Childress in 1923. She
was a member of First United Methodist Church.
She married Earl A. Brown in 1923 at Little Rock, Ark. She was
preceded in death by her husband in 1980 and by a son, Jack, in 1944.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Morgan of Marion, Ky., and
Linda Brown of Odessa; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren;
and a great-greatgrandchild.
Annie Pearl McDearmon Hatley
CHILDRESS - Annie McDearmon Pearl Hatley, 73, died Sunday, Jan. 24,
1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with
the Rev. Alan Lee Egerton of Bible Baptist Church of Childress
officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery.
Mrs. Hatley was born and raised in Childress where she was a lifetime
resident. For 18 years, she was a waitress at the Dixie Cafe.
She married S.A. "Buddy" Hatley in 1945 at Claude. He died in 1985.
Survivors include a sister, Tenner Rogers of Childress; and three
brothers, Carl McDearmon of Andrews, Raymond McDearmon of Borger and
Jessie McDearmon of Childress.
Mattie Stroup
FRITCH - Mattie "Jackie" Stroup, 68, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Bible Baptist Church with the
Rev. Leonard Forsythe, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Field of
Honor in Westlawn Memorial Park by Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors
of Borger.
Mrs. Stroup was born in Broken Bow, Okla., and had been a Fritch
resident since 1967. She was a homemaker and member of Bible Baptist
Church.
She married Billy Stroup in 1964.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Gail Shuffield of Borger
and Donna Hills of Kansas; a son, Billy Stroup Jr., of Albuquerque,
N.M.; six brothers, Jerry Herin and Kenneth Herin, both of Fritch,
Bobby Herin of Oklahoma and Jimmy Dale Herin, Vernon Herin and Donnie
Herin, all of Arkansas; three sisters, Christine McCarley of Pine Top,
Ariz., Sue Smith of Borger and Linda Bailey of Oklahoma; nine
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
William Abner Shelton Jr.
WICHITA FALLS - William Abner Shelton Jr., 77, died Monday, Jan. 25,
1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Price-Jackson Funeral Home
Chapel of Quanah with the Rev. Clinton Young, minister of First
Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Quanah Memorial Park.
Mr. Shelton was born and raised in Quanah. He lived in Wichita Falls
for the past 32 years. He retired as master sergeant from the Air
Force, retired from civil service and retired from the Phoenix
Management Corp.
He married Janelle Hamby Brown in 1966 at Vernon.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jimmy Lloyd and Danny Ray, both
of Wichita Falls; three sisters, Faye Blevins of Quanah, Opal Batts of
Houston and Geraldine Hicks of Wichita Falls; four grandchildren; and
a great-grandchild.
The family will receive visitors from 7 until 8 p.m. today at the
funeral home.
John Robert Henard Jr.
WELLINGTON - John Robert Henard Jr., 82, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church
with the Rev. Brian Adams, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in
South Fairview Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home.
Mr. Henard was born in Collingsworth County and graduated from
Wellington High School in 1934. He attended Texas A&M University and
Draughon's Business College. He served for 31/2 years overseas during
World War II with the Army Air Corps.
A third-generation farmer and rancher, Mr. Henard worked in the cattle
business. He was a partner with his brother, Edd, for 20 years in the
Wellington Livestock Commission and was a partner with his brothers in
Henard Brothers Equipment Co. He served as Collingsworth County
Commissioner Precinct 1 for 12 years.
Mr. Henard served on the board of supervisors of the Soil Conservation
District and was a state winner in the soil conservation contest. He
was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Glenn Moore Post
No. 6439, and was past post commander. He was a member of the
Southwestern Cattle Ranch Association, the American Hereford
Association and the First United Methodist Church.
He married Louise Whisenant in 1945 at Arlington.
Survivors include his wife; a son, John R. Henard III of Wellington; a
daughter, Anne Henard Langford of Wellington; five granddaughters; and
three greatgrandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. today. They
suggests memorials be to First United Methodist Church or Wellington
Cemetery Association.
Amarillo
Allie E. Counts
Allie E. Counts, 87, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Kingdom Hall of
Jehovah's Witnesses Central Terrace Congregation. Burial was in
Memorial Park Cemetery by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St.
Mrs. Counts was born in New Ivanhoe, Okla., and moved to Amarillo in
1941. She attended West Texas Teachers College and taught school in
Follett for several years. She was a seamstress and a member of the
Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses Central Terrace Congregation.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jon Merwin Wilhite, in 1981.
Survivors include three sons, Roy Wilhite and Robert Counts, both of
Panhandle, and Richard Wilhite of Amarillo; a sister, Louise Boeff of
Ontario, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family requests memorials be to Crown of Texas Hospice.
Mae Britton
Mae Britton, 86, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel,
2820 Virginia Circle, with the Rev. Ronnie Tucker, pastor of
Friendship Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial
Park Cemetery by the funeral home.
Mrs. Britton was born near Memphis and had lived in Amarillo for 60
years. She worked in the jewelry business for 45 years, 10 of which
were spent as a watchmaker for Zales Jewelers. She was a member of
Friendship Baptist Church.
She married Johnny Britton in 1929. He died in 1965.
Survivors include a son, John Britton of Amarillo; two daughters, Ann
Perry of Buffalo Gap and Donna Morse of Arlington; two brothers, Wayne
Gatlin and Troy Gatlin, both of Amarillo; nine grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will be at 4606 Matador Trail and suggests memorials be to
Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice and Life Enrichment Center, P.O. Box
950, Amarillo, TX 79176-0001, or to Maverick Boys and Girls Club, 1923
S. Lincoln, Amarillo, TX 79109.
Kate Smith
Kate Smith, 95, of Amarillo, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Rector Funeral Home Chapel,
2800 S. Osage, with Phil Mercado, pastor of Trinity Fellowship Church,
officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born in Mount Pleasant and moved to Amarillo in 1940.
She was a homemaker and member of Trinity Fellowship Church.
She married Reaves Smith in 1925 at Mount Pleasant. She was preceded
in death by her husband in 1955 and by two sons, Carl Edward Smith in
1933 and Roy Smith in 1957.
Survivors include five daughters, Josephine Reel, Dorothy Fowler,
Dovie Peters, Jeffie Taylor and Judy Fink, all of Amarillo; three
sons, Jackie Smith and Ray Smith, both of Amarillo, and Travis Smith
of Lone Oak; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 10
great-greatgrandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Trinity Fellowship Church or to
Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice and Life Enrichment Program.
The family will receive visitors from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the
funeral home.
Billy Duane Simmons
Billy Duane Simmons, 39, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Colonial Funeral Chapel, 1010
W. Ninth, with Windell Taylor, chaplain with the Department of
Veterans Affairs Hospital, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial
Park Cemetery.
Mr. Simmons was born in New Castle, Wyo., and moved to Amarillo in
1970 from Modesto, Calif. For 23 years, he was employed as a plumber
by United Plumbing. He was a Baptist.
He married Patricia "Tinker" Wrinkle in 1977 at Amarillo. He was
preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel Simmons.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Billy Simmons Jr. and Michael
Wrinkle, both of Amarillo; three daughters, Christy Simmons, Jennifer
Simmons and Misty Wrinkle, all of Amarillo; his father, Billy Paul
Simmons of Amarillo; two brothers, Terry Pillow of Henrietta, and
Robert Pillow of Amarillo; a sister, Barbara Chittenden of Amarillo;
and a grandchild.
The family will be at 4355 S. Polk. They suggest memorials be to the
American Heart Association.

Lydia Raub
Lydia Raub, 74, of Waxahachie, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral
Directors Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd., Amarillo, with the
Rev. Ron Tucker of Friendship Baptist Church officiating. Burial will
be in Llano Cemetery.
Mrs. Raub was born in Henrietta. She was a Baptist.
She married Harry Raub in 1941 at Henrietta. She was preceded in death
by a son, Edgar L. Raub, in 1981.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Kay Sellers of
Amarillo, Rita Pittmon of Mansfield and Sara Williams of Waxahachie;
five sisters, Elsie Himes of Bushnell, Fla., Alma Marshall of Texline,
Ann Brunaugh of Bunker Hill, Ill., Freda Musick of Amarillo and Rose
Butler of Denison; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will be at 2006 Walker Dr. They suggest memorials be to the
American Heart Association.
Beecher W. Dees
Beecher W. Dees, 88, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999.
The family plans private memorial services. Arrangements are by
Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40.
Mr. Dees was born in Electra. He lived in Borger and then lived in
Ozark, Ark., before moving to Amarillo in 1978. He was the owner of
Tri-City Sand and Gravel. At the Gardner Church of Christ in Borger,
he served as a deacon.
He married W. Dorine Gambill in 1933 at Electra.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Beecher Valden Dees of Corpus
Christi, William Marvin Dees of Reed Spring, Md., and Michael E. Dees
of Fritch; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to High Plains Children's Home.
Ruby Henley
Ruby Henley, 94, of Beaumont and formerly of Amarillo, died Sunday,
Jan. 24, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral
Directors, Ivy Chapel, 2820 Virginia Circle, with the Rev. Darrell
Foster of San Jacinto Assembly of God officiating. Burial will be in
Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Henley was born in Caddo Gap, Ark., and had lived in Beaumont for
19 years. She attended Nazarene College. In 1927, she moved to Texas
and sang in a quartet that traveled throughout the Panhandle.
Mrs. Henley taught Sunday school and taught at what is now
Southwestern Assembly of God University. In 1963, she became a
licensed Assembly of God minister. She was a member of the First
Assembly of God in Amarillo and had a radio show in Beaumont.
She married Jimmie Lee Henley in 1923 at Valonia, Ark. She was
preceded in death by her husband in 1984 and by a son, George Thomas
Henley, in 1931.
Survivors include a son, Ted Henley of Beaumont; a daughter, Martha
Ladd of Beaumont; and six grandchildren.
Kenneth G. Stephenson
Kenneth G. Stephenson, 80, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral
Directors, Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with Dr. Howard K.
Batson of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Llano
Cemetery.
Mr. Stephenson was born and raised in Floydada where he graduated from
high school. He graduated from West Texas State University with a
degree in sports journalism and was a tennis coach.
During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps where he fought
in the Battle of the Balkans, Battle of Tunisia, and in Sicily,
Naples, Rome, France, Rhineland, Algeria and Morocco. Decorations he
received included the EAME Service Medal, five Overseas bars, Good
Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, an Oakleaf cluster, 11 Bronze
Battle Stars and the American Defense Service Medal.
In 1945, Mr. Stephenson moved to Amarillo where he was in charge of
purchasing at Amarillo Air Force Base. In 1985, he retired as a letter
carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the National
Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 1037. He was a Baptist.
He married Juanita Williams in 1955 at Clovis, N.M.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lisa Stephenson Gideon of
Burleson and Linda Hollings of Amarillo; two sons, Larry E. Stephenson
of Austin and Lyndel M. Stephenson of Fort Worth; a sister, Mozell
Bickel of Valley Center, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
Ivy Agotha Clark
Ivy Agotha Clark, 88, of Amarillo and formerly of Groom, died Sunday,
Jan. 24, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Groom Church of Christ in
Groom with Gaylord Cook of Dalhart Church of Christ officiating.
Burial will be in Groom Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S.
Georgia St., of Amarillo.
Mrs. Clark was born in Childress and was a longtime resident of Groom.
She was a nurse at Groom Memorial Hospital for many years and worked
with her husband in farming and ranching. She was a member of Groom
Church of Christ.
She married Roy Clark in 1932 at Claude. She was preceded in death by
her husband in 1981 and by a son, George H. Clark, in 1997.
Survivors include a daughter, Nadine Thornton of Groom; a son, Walter
Dale Clark of Amarillo; a brother, Henry Merrick of Groom; nine
grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three
great-greatgrandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.
Hubert D. Clark
Hubert D. Clark, 74, of Amarillo, died Friday, Jan 22, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Llano Cemetery with
Windell Taylor, chaplain, officiating. Arrangements are by
Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St.
Mr. Clark was born in Ralls and moved to Amarillo in 1981 from
Missouri. He was a Marine veteran of World War II. He was a petroleum
engineer and member of Masonic Lodge No. 731 in Amarillo.
He is survived by a sister, Norma Davis of Sun City, Ariz.
The family suggests memorials be to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots.
