Robert Hurt
Mr. Robert "R.L." Hurt, age 90, formerly of 208 Ferguson Avenue,
Elizabethton, died Friday, April 28, 2006, in the Life Care Center of
Elizabethton following an extended illness.
He was a native of Carter County and was the son of the late Dayton and
Bessie Lee Smith Hurt. He was retired from North American Rayon Corp. after 40
years of service. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II and was a member of the
Captain Lynn H. Folsom, V.F.W. Post No. 2166. He was a member of the Oak Street
Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife,
Alice Bowers Hurt, and by two brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Dugger McQueen Hurt of the home; two
stepsons and their wives, Scott Lynn and Robin Hughes of England and the Rev.
George Dewey and Lori Hughes of Waco, Texas; four grandchildren, Andrew Hughes,
Maggie Hughes, Kelly Hughes and Christopher Hughes; two nephews, Bobby Glen
Templeton of Monterey and John M. Terry of Fair Haven, Maine; three sisters-in-
law, Nancy Huggins of Matthews, N.C., and Ona Treadway and Kathleen Hurt, both
of Elizabethton.
The funeral Service for Mr. Robert "R.L." Hurt " will be conducted at 8
p.m. Monday, May 1, 2006, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home with
the Rev. Bobby Stout and the Rev. George Hughes officiating. Music will be
under the under the direction of Mr. Eddie Skelton, Mr. Bill Saylor and Mr.
Michael Shipley. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11
a.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with military
honors provided by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom, V.W.F. Post No. 2166 and the
Tennessee Army National Guard. Everyone attending the graveside service is
asked to meet at the funeral home Tuesday at 10 a.m. to go in procession to the
cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. prior to the
service in the chapel, or you may call the residence, 208 Ferguson Avenue,
Elizabethton at any time. Active pallbearers will be Raymond Blevins, Jeff
Treadway, Pat Freeman, Jack Pippin, Roger Banks, Jeff Guinn, Steve Dunlap and
Terry Treadway. Honorary pallbearers will be Millard Layne, Buck Estep. E.S.
Elliott, Clyde Ashworth, Howard Phillips, Kenneth Nave, Earl Mitchell, Hubert
Hicks, Ralph Gouge and Ray Hamilton. Members of the Senior Citizens Dance Club
of Elizabethton, special dance buddies, Leona Jackson, Sue McGraw, Dollie
McCall, Ileen Matherly and Jo Ruth Counts Hughes.
A special "Thank You" is extended to special caregivers, Raymond Blevins,
Mary Hopkins, Lela Hamilton, Betty McKeehan, other special friends, Margaret
Hopkins and Jeremey Townsend and the Senior Citizens Dance Club Members and a
very special little friend, Mary Ingram from the Life Care Center of
Elizabethton and all the other nursing staff. "I have fought a good fight, I
have finished my course, I have kept the faith:" (II Timothy 4:7) Those who
prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donation in memory of Mr. Hurt to
the Immanuel Baptist Church, 205 Hunter Avenue, Elizabethton, TN 37643. Online
