Backus, Leeland Edward   
July 3, 2005 Leeland Edward Backus, 67, died Sunday, July 3, 2005, at Kindred
Hospital in Greensboro, NC. He was a native of Syracuse and the son of the
late Edward John and Thelma Seeley Backus. Leeland was a retired truck driver
and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Teamsters Union #707 in
Hempstead, NY, and a member of the National Riflemen's Association. He was
also an associate member of the National Aeronautic Association, enjoying
planes and flying since his youth. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Appell
Backus of the home; daughters, Dawn Marie Backus of Liverpool, Colleen Backus
of Syracuse and Brenda Backus of Oklahoma; stepdaughters, Robin Fuller, and
her husband, Mike, of Greensboro, NC, and Dawn Sutton of Pleasant Garden, NC;
stepson, Bill Robertson of Greensboro, NC; brothers, David Backus of
Pennellville, George Backus of Bridgeport and Donald Backus of Minoa. A
memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests that
memorials be made to Make-a-Wish Foundation of America, Gift Processing

Bertini, Ann Vino   
July 2, 2005 Ann Vino Bertini, 82, of Cortland, passed away Saturday, July 2,
2005, in St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse. She was born in Syracuse and lived
in Mattydale, Romulus, Skaneateles, Cortland and Syracuse before moving back
to Cort-land in 1981. A graduate of Skaneateles High School 1940, St. Joseph's
Hospital School of Nursing 1944, and Simmons School of Mortuary Science 1974,
she also took graduate courses at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI. Mrs.
Bertini served as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during WWII. She
owned Bertini Funeral Home in Skaneateles and in Cortland (1975-1995). She was
a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Cortland. She was a member of St. Joseph's
Alumni Association, Catholic Daughters of America, Cortland Historical Society
and Skaneateles Historical Society. Also she was a former member of Smith
School PTA, NYS Funeral Directors' Association, American Legion-Cortland City
Post 489 and a former director of Caring Community Hospice of Cortland
Foundation Board and Department of Social Services of Cortland County Advisory
Board. She was a co-founder with her late husband of the Cortland YWCA swim
team. She was employed by St. Mary's Hospital, Syracuse; St. Joseph's
Hospital, Syracuse; Mercy Hospital, Auburn; Cortland Memorial Hospital,
Cortland; and Biggs Memorial Hospital, Ithaca. She was an active volunteer at
St. Mary's School until her death. Survived by two sons, Charles (Denise) of
Orlando, FL, and James of Denver, CO; two daughters, Catherine (Thomas
Haskell) of Cortland and Marianne (Brian Cummins) of Cortland; a grandson,
William F. Lessard of Cortland; a granddaughter, Lauren Bertini of Orlando,
FL; several cousins; and a special friend and mentor, John Badman. She was
predeceased by her husband, Fulvio "Bert" Bertini, in 2001. Mass of Christian
Burial will be in St. Mary's Church, Cortland, July 6, 2005, at 9:30 a.m.,
with the Rev. Michael Minehan officiating. Calling hours will be at the home

Bullock, John T.   
July 3, 2005 John T. Bullock, 82, of Hannibal, died Sunday at the VA Hospital
in Syracuse. Born in Michigan, he was a life resident of White Cemetery Road
in the town of Ira. He was employed at Armstrong Corporation and Syracuse
University Steam Station, as well as being a self-employed electrician and
farmer. John served with the Timberwolves 104th Infantry Division of World War
II, from which he received several medals. He was a member of South Hannibal
Federated Church, Hannibal, and the Election Board in the town of Ira. He was
predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Arvilla; brother, James; sister,
Beatrice; and his wife of 61 years, Mary E. Bullock. Surviving are his
children: Patricia Schaefer of Albuquerque, NM; Carole McIntyre of Fair Haven;
James Bullock of Ortonville, MI; Bruce Bullock of Hamlin; Roger Bullock of
Hannibal; Lynne Hunter of Hannibal; and John "Andy" Bullock of Fort Walton
Beach, FL; a brother, Guy Bullock of Three Rivers, MI; 18 grandchildren;

July 3, 2005 Victoria Diak, 89, of 685 West Fourth St., Fulton, died Sunday at
A. L. Lee Memorial Hospital. She was born in Fulton and has been a lifetime
resident. Mrs. Diak retired from General Electric, Syracuse, as a production
operator. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Diak; her son, Sam Diak;
sister, Rose Scarborough; and brothers, Frank and Joseph Christopher. Mrs.
Diak is survived by her siblings, Victor Christopher and Barbara Christopher,
of Fulton, and Pat Christopher of Harbor City, CA; four grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services

Friday, July 1, 2005, at University Hospital surrounded by her family. She was
a homemaker and a longtime member of St.Mary's Church in Baldwinsville. She is
survived by herhusband of 68 years, Salvatore, of Baldwinsville; a son, Robert

July 2, 2005 Steven Ernest Esposito, 16, of 1401 Route 104, Parish, died
Saturday from injuries suffered in a car accident. Steven would have been
entering tenth grade at A.P.W. High School. He played with the Salmon River
Hockey team, the Ontario Bay StormHigh School Hockey team and A.P.W. Modified
Football. He is survived by his parents, Michael and Lynn; a brother, Michael
Jr.; sisters Angela and Stephanie; maternal grandmother, Mary Hauser; several
aunts and uncles: Michelene and Arnold Bernardon, Mary Esposito, Patrick and
Laura Esposito, Joseph Greco and the late Katherine Greco, Jane and Ed
Wojtaszek, Carol and Vance Sawyer, and Bill Hauser; and several cousins.

Born in Germany, she lived in Syracuse most of her life. She was a retired
executive secretary for Niagara Mohawk and a communicant of Most Holy Rosary
Church. Betty enjoyed playing golf, bowling and bridge with her many friends.
She was the widow of Hugh J. Gaffney, who died in 1963. Surviving are several

Gardner, Marshall L.   
July 2, 2005 Marshall L. Gardner, 67, of Liverpool, succumbed on Saturday
after a long battle with lung cancer. Born in Port Washington, NY, Mr. Gardner
was the owner of the Celebrity Den Restaurant for 20 years. He had previously
worked as arestaurant manager in New York City. He was an avid fisherman and
hunter and had a great love of growing roses. He was predeceased by his
mother, Margaret, and his sister, Germaine. Survivors include his wife of 35
years, Ursula; his father, Harold of Port Richey, FL; two brothers, Douglas of
CT and William of Homested, NY; a granddaughter, Nicole (Jason) Bullis of
Liverpool; and a great-grandson, Brayden of Liverpool. Services will be held
on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at New Comer Family Funeral Home, North Syracuse.

Gulley, James
July 3, 2005 James Thomas Gulley, 80, of Hixson, TN, passed away at Memorial
Hospital on July 3, 2005, of complications from Alzheimer's disease. Mr.
Gulley was born in Chattanooga, raised in Soddy-Daisy and Dunlap, TN, and
Columbus, GA, and was a communicant of St. Jude's Catholic Church in
Chattanooga. He was an 18-year veteran of the U.S. Army Paratroopers and the
U.S. Marine Corps, serving in WW II campaigns in North AFrica, China and
several Pacific islands. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars. He was a 4th-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a loyal member
of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Prior to retirement in 2000, he was a
long-haul truck- and intercity bus driver. He was also proud of his
contributions as a welder and laborer at Solvay Process in Geddes. He was
preceded in death by his son, Michael Gulley, and his daughter, Jane Gulley
Otero. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marguerite T. Kennedy
Gulley. He was the devoted, respected and loving father of his children, Lynn
(Fred) Jolly of Nicholasville, KY; Francine Parsons of Birmingham, AL; and Jim
(Rose) Gulley of Penfield, NY. He had several grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m.
Wednesday at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Chattanooga, with Father Robert
Hoeffsteter officiating. Interment will be in Maplegrove Cemetery in
Nicholasville, KY. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the
funeral home, where a prayer service wll be given at 7:30 p.m. While the

Kerschner, Dr. Samuel   
July 1, 2005 Dr. Samuel Kerschner, 79, of Boynton Beach, FL, died Friday, July
1. Dr. Kerschner was a former resident of Cortland until 1991, when he moved
to Manlius. He was a 1961 graduate of New York Chiropractic Institute and was
a chiropractor in Cortland from 1976 until he retired in 2003 and moved to
Florida. He was a member of Temple Adath Yeshurun, a member and past president
of District 6 of the New York State Chiropractic Association and a member and
former chancellor of the Knights of Phythias. Survived by his wife of 57
years, Pearl; sons: Dr. Paul, Dr. David and Dr. Marc; four grandchildren:
Jennifer, Jared, Elyse and Jaclyn Kerschner. Shivah will be observed at the

July 3, 2005 Robert M. McMains, 75, of Onondaga, passed away Sunday, July 3,
at his home. Born in Baltimore, MD, he resided in Onondaga for 41 years. He
attended George Washington University and served in the U.S. Army from
1947-1949. He was the retired owner of McMains Insurance Agency, a member of
Camillus and Otisco Sportsmen's clubs, a member and founder of the Highmarket
Northern Pines Sportsmen's Club and a former member of the Elks' Club.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Dougherty McMains; his children: Cynthia (Mark)
Barr of Largo, FL; David (Connie) McMains of Alachua, FL; Karen (William)

master's degree in elementary education from Hofstra University in Hempstead,

Syracuse and Farmingdale areas. Sarah had previously taught at Franklin

Gamma Sorority. She wasa member of Erwin First United Methodist Church and The
United Methodist Women. She was also a 25-year volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, William P. Taylor; daughters, Anne
(Clark) Burrows of Holden, MA, and Joan (Edward) Fitzpatrick of Colchester,
VT; sons, Stephen and Jeffrey Taylor, both of Syracuse; and four
grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Erwin First United
Methodist Church. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Oriskany Falls.
Arrangements are by Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. In

Vargo, Andrew P.
July 4, 2005 Andrew P. Vargo, 85, of Syracuse, died on Monday at the Veteran's
Administration Hospital. He was a retired postal clerk with the U.S. Post
Office, a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, a communicant of St. Vincent
dePaul Church and a memberof the DAV and VFW. He was predeceased by his wife,
Josephine, in 1978 and daughter, Mary Drew, in 1999. He is survived by his
sons: John of Vermont, Joseph (Ro) of Syracuse and Thomas (Lynn) of Indiana;
daughters: Kathy (Michael) Byrnes of Jamesville, Marge Vargo of Syracuse, Liz
(Jeffery) Smith of Minnesota and Anne Cheney of Kingston, Ontario; 14
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a niece, Carol Newton of North
Carolina. Funeral services are Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at
Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent dePaul
Church. Burial is in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4
to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 3111 James Street. In lieu of flowers,

Weiermann, Pauline Mary   
July 2, 2005 Pauline Mary Weiermann, 76, of Greenway-New London Rd., Verona,
NY, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord on July 2, 2005,
surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 9, 1929, in Rome, the
daughter of Frank and Pau-line Gymburch Barber. She married Herbert on July 2,
1949. He predeceased her on May 14, 2003. Pauline spent her life devoted to
her family and friends. She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ
and the Lee American Legion Women's Auxiliary. Surviving are two daughters and
one son-in-law, Sandra and Gene Woodcock, Manlius, and Diane Weiermann,
Baldwinsville; one son, Gary Weiermann, Verona; granddaughter, Amanda, and
grandson, Brandon, both of Manlius; one sister and brother-in-law, Anne and
John Seidel; one brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Leona Barber, Rome;
sister-in-law, Bernice Barber, Maryland; several nieces, nephews and many
special friends. She was predeceased by a brother, John Barber, in 1974. A
special thank you to Dr. Robert Carhart and staff at 550 Harrison Center and
the Coronary Care Unit (6C) at University Hospital. In addition, thanks to Dr.
Bruce Slagle and Dr. David Karandy of the Rome Medical Group. Funeral services
will be held at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George Street,
Rome, Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Interment: Rome Cemetery immediately following.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Williams, Ann G.
June 29, 2005 Ann G. Williams of Woodinville, WA, died June 29, 2005,
surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Williams was a former resident of
Bellevue and had lived in Washington since 1967. Born December 24, 1936, in
Scranton, PA, she attended school in Dalton, PA, and later moved to
Fayetteville, NY, graduating from Fayetteville-Manlius High School in 1955.
She enjoyed boating on the waters of the Pacific Northwest, sewing, gardening,
crafts, visiting Colonial Williamsburg and spending time with her many friends
from the Bellevue Sail and Power Squadron. She loved her family and was
passionate about her responsibilities as a wife, mother and grandmother. Ann
graced us with her calm, gentle spirit and will be missed by all who were
touched by her presence. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Donald G.
Williams; her two children, Greg (Carol Ann) Williams and Tracyann (Larry)
Anderson, all living in the Seattle area; her three grandchildren: Ali
Williams of Phoenix, AZ, and Dylan and Haley Anderson; her mother, Mabel
Games, and her sister, Margaret Games, both of Arlington, VA. A memorial
service will be held Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at 3 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal
Church, 127 State St., Kirkland, WA 98033. Remembrances may be made to the
American Cancer Society or the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Arrangements:
