Date: September 16, 2000 Byline: Headline: Secundino Baldonado
While bombs and planes exploded, Jarales native heroically reacted, bringing
comrades to safety ˜ and lost his life (La Historia del Rio Abajo is a monthly
column about Valencia County history written by members of the Valencia County
Historical Society. This month's column is written by Jim Boeck, a Vietnam era
veteran who holds a bachelor's and a master's degree in history.

New Mexico's Valencia Campus. Readers are also encouraged to join the historical

May 19, 1965, was a day like many others at the Bien Hoa Air Base in South
Vietnam. As U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War steadily escalated, American Air
Force personnel prepared four B-57 bombers for take-off on tactical air
operations against the Communist enemy. The base's remaining B-57s were lined up
in close formation, but without revetments or bays with sandbags to help protect
against chain explosions in the event of an accident.

Suddenly, an accident occurred. The explosion of several 500-pound bombs
triggered a series of explosions among the B-57s, rocking the runway and
buildings near and far. First Lt. Jess E. Maxwell was shaving in the officers'
barracks when the blasts shook his building three-quarters of a mile from the
accident site.

Running to a window, Maxwell witnessed huge orange flames flashing 500 feet
into the air. As the fire spread from one B-57 to the next, bombs and fuel tanks
were ignited, causing additional explosions. The blasts blew out windows
throughout the base. Tin roofs were ripped off airplane hangars, and even the
base's air control tower was knocked out of operation.

Airmen rushed toward the scene, gathering their weapons and helmets in case
this was a guerrilla attack on their position. Others hurried for their bunkers
as hot white shrapnel flew in all directions. Firemen and medical personnel
braved the deadly hail of flying metal in desperate attempts to extinguish the
flames and assist the wounded. Technical Sgt. Secundino "Dino" Baldonado was one
of the brave men who worked hard to remove his wounded comrades before the
flightline was completely engulfed in flames.

Secundino may well have longed for a more tranquil time in his life during
those anguishing moments.

"Dino" was the oldest of 17 children born to Remigio and Avelina Baldonado in
the beautiful farmland of Jarales, N.M. As a youngster, he helped his large
family in many ways, including hunting for pheasant and cottontail rabbits to
provide meat for their table. His brother, Ruperto, remembers that he was always
thoughtful, bringing gifts for his younger siblings at Christmas.

Adventuresome and patriotic, Secundino quit school in 1945 to serve the
United States in World War II. After enlisting in the Army, he completed his
education and received an honorable discharge in January, 1947.

Secundino returned to civilian life in New Mexico, working as a logger in
Catron County for two years. But civilian life seemed dull in comparison to the
excitement and comradeship of the military. Choosing the military as a career,
he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in March 1949.

Once established in the Air Force, Secundino married the woman of his dreams,
Grace Fields of Albuquerque. Three children, Michael, Randy and Marta Ann, were
born to the Baldonados. In the coming years, Secundino was stationed at many
bases in the United States and overseas, giving his growing family opportunities
to visit exotic places and experience many cultures. A successful career man,
Secundino rose through the ranks to become a non-commissioned officer and an
expert in aircraft maintenance.

But Secundino's peaceful life was soon to be a distant memory. His reality
was about to be changed forever.

As the Vietnam War heated up, Secundino was ordered to Clark Air Base in the
Republic of the Philippines. On April 12, 1965, he was transferred to temporary
duty as the non-commissioned officer in charge of B-57 maintenance at Bien Hoa
Air Base in Vietnam. Grace and the children moved to Albuquerque to be closer to
family and friends.

The terrible accident of May 16 occurred a little over a month after
Secundino's arrival in Vietnam. The tech sergeant knew that the situation was
precarious as flames and flying debris endangered the lives of many around him.
Only his strong sense of responsibility, learned as the eldest in a large
family, and a sense of duty, learned as a career soldier, enabled him to respond
in the face of danger, assisting wounded buddies and clearing equipment from the
flightline.

Tragically, a fuel tank exploded near Secundino. With no time to escape, he
was fatally wounded and died a hero's death almost instantly.

Secundino's parents received news of the accident in a telegram from Air
Force Major Gen. G.B. Green.. The telegram read: "It is with deep regret to
officially inform you that you son, Tsgt. Secundino Baldonado, has been missing
since May 16, 1965, at Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, as a result of a
series of explosions at that base. Extensive recovery operations are now being
conducted. When further information is received, you will be notified
immediately. Please accept my sincere sympathy in this time of anxiety." A
second telegram confirmed the Baldonado family's worst fears: Secundino had been
killed.

Air Force Major Gen. J.H. Moore sent a follow-up letter on May 22. It said:
"In this time of your bereavement, all personnel of the Second Air Division join
me in extending our deepest sympathy over the loss of your son, Technical
Sergeant Secundino Baldonado. He was held in high esteem by his fellow airmen.

"Dino made the supreme sacrifice in the service of his country for the cause
of freedom. His loss will strengthen the resolve of those of us who remain to
assure the victory he sought so gallantly.

"All members of the United States Air Force in Southeast Asia share in your
sorrow."

Tech. Sgt. Baldonado's body was brought back to the United States for burial
in Belen. On May 26, 1965, a Mass with full military honors was said for him at
Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. He was interred in his family's plot at the
local Catholic cemetery.

On July 28, 1965, presentation ceremonies were held posthumously at Kirtland
Air Force Base in Albuquerque. Michael, Secundino's 12-year-old son, proudly
received the Bronze Star awarded to his father for great heroism. Air Force Maj.
Gen. John W. White pinned the medal on Michael's coat while the boy's mother,
Grace, looked on.

Gen. White also presented a medal to Secundino's parents on that summer day.
An accompanying citation read: "Tech. Sgt. Baldonado distinguished himself by
meritorious achievement while engaged in ground support of tactical air
operations against an opposing armed force at Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of
Vietnam, on May 16, 1965. On that day, several 500-pound bombs exploded
accidentally while four B-57 aircraft were preparing to take off on a mission.
In spite of the hazards of fire, exploding ammunition and flying debris, Tech.
Sgt. Baldonado remained in the area, assisting in removing injured comrades, and
clearing the fireline of equipment that at any time could be enveloped in fire.
Through his action and unselfish dedication to duty, Tech. Sgt. Baldonado
reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force."

Secundino was survived by his parents, his widow, their three children, four
sisters (Rosanna Cordova, Silvia Garcia, Erlinda Garcia, Reina Pino) and 10
brothers (Ruperto, Arsenio, Miguel, Guadalupe, Jose, Felix, Martin, Arturo,
Antonio and David Baldonado). Remarking, of the surviving 10 Baldonado brothers,
eight have patriotically served in the armed forces of the United States. A
single family could not have served or sacrificed more for its grateful nation.
