September 2 in Lovington.  She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church
for many years.  She was born September 21, 1909, in Mayhill, NM.
She married Marvin Jackson on December 22, 1927, in Roswell, NM.  He
preceded her in death on December 23, 1976.  Survivors include son and
daughter-in-law, William M. (Bill) and Maxine Jackson of Artesia;
daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Jimmy Reed of Lovington, NM; six
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death
by her parents, five brothers, four sisters and a great-grandson.

Roswell, NM, for Elizabeth Johnson.  Johnson, 100, died December 31.
She was born in Roswell on April 6, 1899.  She grew up in Hope, NM,
and Loving, NM, before settling in Carlsbad.  She taught school
in Eddy County for 42 years.  She was a member of the Church of
Christ, Delta Kappa Gamma and the National Educators Association.
She is survived by a sister, Nettie Nell Kercheville of
El Paso, Texas.

JOHNSON, VIRGINIA
A private burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque, NM,
for Virginia Becker Johnson.  She died September 12, in the home she
and her husband built in 1939.  She was born in Alexandria, VA, on
December 10, 1910.  She was the youngest of three children born to
Lena Hope Fox Becker and Dr. Henry Moore Becker.  Dr. Becker moved his
family to Clayton, NM, when the children were small.  She graduated
from Clayton High School in 1928 and attended the University of Arkansas
at Fayetville for one year before transferring to the University of
New Mexico where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi.  The Great Depression
caused her to returen to Clayton.  There, she met her husband.  They
were married in Santa Fe, NM, in 1936.  They then moved to Carlsbad in
1937.  They had three daughters, two of whom survive.  Their first child,
Marianne, died in 1977.  Mr. Johnson died in 1991.  She is survived
by her sister, Hazel Frances Becker; her daughters, Karen Johnson Furia
and Allida Ellen Taylor; son-in-law, Lester K. Taylor; five grandchildren,
Carter M. Taylor and his wife, Anne, Dr. Ellen Moore Rigsby, Dr. Peter A.
Furia, William C. Taylor, and Nicholas A. Furia; two great-grandchildren,
Jack and Adam Taylor.

JURVA
A memorial service is scheduled for January 7 at Christ the King
Church in Campbell, Calif., for Betty H. Jurva.  Jurva, 83, died
January 3 at Columbia Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, Calif.
after a short illness.  Betty Young Jurva was born November 11, 1916,
in Phenix, Ariz., to Myra Hooper and Henry Herbert Hotchkiss.
She was raised in the Valley of the Sun and graduated from
Phoenix Union High School in 1934.  In 1938, she earned her
bachelor of arts degree from Arizona State University.  Shortly
thereafter she moved to Morenci, Ariz. to teach elementary school.
There she met and married Urho "Jerry" A. Jurva.  The moved to
eastern Oregon.  WWII drew the couple to Southern California where
he found work in the defense industry.  In 1997, they moved to
Lakeview Christian Home in Carlsbad.  She was preceded in death by
an older sister, Myra Hotchkiss, and her husband, Jerry, in May 1998.
Survivors include a daughter, Anne M. Agah of San Jose, Calif.; son,
Charles H. Jurva of Carlsbad; and four grandchildren.  (Photo shown

Royall.  He was a life member of DAV Chapter 30 in Carlsbad.  He
was a Catholic.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter
Karas, and a stepdaughter, LaVane Albritton.  Survivors include
his wife; sons, Ted Karas of Carlsbad and Ronnie Karas of
Fort Worth, TX; stepson, Elvin Royall of Petaluma, Calif.; daughter,
Karen Spoczynski of Chicago, Texas; stepdaughter, Marsha

He was a Past Exalted Ruler with the Amarillo Elks Lodge #923, and
a member of the Eddy Lodge AF and AM, and First United Methodist
Church.  He was preceded in death by two brothers; a granddaughter;
and his wife in 1999.  He is survived by daughters, Carol Savacool of
Carlsbad, and Billie Kenney of Lubbock, TX; two brothers, Lonnie
and Jack Keith, both of Amarillo; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-

1998.  Survivors include son Stephen Kelly of Lake Jackson, Texas;
daughters Barbara Walker of Albuquerque, NM, and Norma Jean Sanders
of Odessa; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-
great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband Nate
in 1977, granddaughter Cinda in 1992; and a great-great-granddaughter

to Artesia in 1945 from West Texas.  He was initiated into the
Scottish Rite of Freemasonry August 8, 1929.  Survivors include
his wife of the home; sons, Robert Eugene Kennedy and wife Vickie
of Las Vegas, Nev., Lary C. Kennedy and wife Pat of Artesia; and
Kent Kennedy and wife Faith of Odessa, TX; brother Gordon Kennedy
of California; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and
two great-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his

Odessa, Texas.  He was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1952 and
served two years in Korea.  He was a member of the VFW No. 8703 in
Carlsbad.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Cree.
Survivors include his wife, Allie Knight of the family home; son,
Perry Knight of Green River, Wyo.; daughters, Audrey Knight of
San Angelo, Texas, and Carol Knight of Carlsbad; sister, Shirley

area.  He served in the Navy during the Vietnam conflict.  He had
moved to Albuquerque in the early 1980's where he worked at Kirtland
Air Force Base.  He married Darla Taylor on November 28, 1985 in
Albuquerque.  They moved to Carlsbad about 12 years ago.  He was
a member of the DAV.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Darla Lewis of Carlsbad; sons, Doug A.
Lewis, Jr. of Cleveland, Steve Herbel of Carlsbad and Stacy Halley of

for about eight years before moving to Carlsbad in 1975.  In 1986, she
married C.W. Lewis, and he preceded her in death in 1993.  She was of
the Baptist faith.  In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded
in death by a sister and a brother.  Survivors include sons, Ollie
Fitzgerald of Carlsbad and Jean Lewis of Pittsburgh; daughters, Shirley
Terrill of Rougue River, OR, and Elaine Phillips of Austin, TX; and

LITTLE
Services for Tommie "Ruth" Little, 73, will be today at Denton-Funchess
Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery.  She
died April 9 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Albuquerque, NM.  Denton-Funchess
is in charge of arrangements.  She was born December 27, 1926, to
James Henry and Mary Jo Adams Morgan in Wewoka, OK.  In 1937, she moved
to Carlsbad where she graduated from high school.  She married Jack Little
on April 1, 1957.  He preceded her in death in 1983.  She was Baptist
by faith.  Survivors include a son, Ronnie J. "Ducker" Martin of
Carlsbad; brothers, Joe Morgan of Carlsbad and Wiley Morgan of
Green River, WY; and one grandson.  (Photo shown)

LOFTIS
No services are scheduled for Donna Little Loftis, 60, of Carlsbad.
She died January 13 at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock, Texas.
Cremation arrangements are with Chapel of Angels Funeral Home of
Lubbock.  She was born March 9, 1939, in Waldron, Ark., to
Orbin and Verneal Ruff Little.  She graduated from Carlsbad High
School in 1957 and had been a long time resident of Carlsbad.  She
married J.E. Loftis on December 29, 1960, in Grants, NM.  She was
a member of Southside Church of Christ.  Survivors include her
husband; daughters, Kathleen Loftis and Heather Thompson of
Las Vegas, Nev.; and two grandchildren.

LOPEZ
Services for Pascual M. Lopez, 58, will be April 8 at San Jose
Catholic Church.  Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery.  He
died April 5 at his home.  Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.  He was born April 20, 1941, to Juan and
Bartola Martinez Lopez in Carlsbad.  He was a lifelong resident.
He married Delma Pena in 1957.  He was a member of San Jose Catholic
Church.  He was preceded in death by his father in 1946 and a son,
Ricky Lopez, in 1963.  Survivors include his wife; mother of
Goshen, CA; sons, Abel, Robert, Eddie, Tommy, Ricky, and John all of
Carlsbad; daughters, Corina Moreno of San Antonio, TX and JoAnn Lee
of Carlsbad; brothers, Jimmy, Sammy, and Joel of Goshen, CA, Domingo
and Tony of Visalia, CA, and Fidencio of San Jose, CA; sisters,
Julia Anaya and Juana L. Cobos of Carlsbad, and Olivia L. Baldivez,
Amelia L. Amalla, and Luisa Vasquez of Goshen, CA; and 19 grand-
