His wife, Mary J., was born in 1859 or 1860 in Minnesota. Children: Clifford A. was born in 1880 in Iowa; and Wesley was born in 1882 in Minnesota. William was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in January, 1881. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated them 66th in Hubbard. William moved to Badoura Township in August, 1892. On June 7, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated them eighth in Badoura Township. Living with the Nagles were Clifford Mow, age 15, and Wesley Mow, age 13. William died April 26, 1897. NEAD H. M. Nead was just hanging up his shingle in Shell City according to the August 3, 1882, Enterprise. NEAR Jacob Near was born in 1846 in Michigan, possibly in Shiawassee county. His wife, Josie, was born in 1855 in Indiana. Children: Morgan was born in 1874 in Iowa; and Maudie was born in 1876 in Iowa, Jacob, with his wife and three children, arrived in a heavy rainstorm with Captain Huntsinger in time for the October 12, 1882, Enterprise. One child must have died before the 1885 census. In May 1885 John Terweale enumerated them with only two children, 21st in Elbow Lake. NELSON Godfrey Nelson was born in 1860 in Denmark. Godfrey was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1883 and to the Henrietta Enumeration District in the spring of 1889. On June 11, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated him with the family of Charles Rockwell, 42nd in Henrietta township. NICHEV Nichev was evidently a Chippewa who lived in Park Rapids. His return to Leech Lake is noticed in the September 7, 1882, Enterprise. NOBLE V. B. Noble was a son of Judge Noble of McGregor, Clayton County, Iowa. He probably moved to Osage Township in Becker County, but I could not locate a census reference. The October 12, 1882, Enterprise states that he had returned from Verndale the previous Saturday. The October 12, 1882, Enterprise states that young Noble arrived with the Honorable J. B. Cutler, and visited Carson "to attend a replevin suit between J. J. Gillan and S. S. McKinley before Justice Carson." The suit was dismissed, there being no cause for action. Mr. Noble stayed in Park Rapids and hired George Coon to build his office the first door south of Huntsinger's hotel. He hung out his shingle as an afforney, and agent for loans, insurance, and land in November 1882. V. B. Noble Page 108 was appointed Hubbard county auditor by the three commissioners on March 28, 1883, and served until May 19 that year. NORMAN Carrie Norman On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated her in Doran;s hotel, 65th in Park Rapids. Carrie had worked the past year there as a hotel maid. David Norman Jr. was born 1873 in Canada. On June 19, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated David with the family of William Flanagan, another Canadian, in Hubbard Township. David was a farmer who moved to the Hubbard Enumeration district in Minnesota in the spring of 1891. George Norman was born in 1830 in England. His wife, Mary, was born in 1843, in Canada. Children at home: Lyell (sp?) M. was born In 1874 in Canada; Mary A. was born in 1876 in Canada; Elizabeth C. was born in 1878 in Canada; Lily (sp?) E. was born in 1881 in Canada; Wilfred L. was born in 1884 in Canada. On June 20, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 71st in Hubbard Township. George was a farmer who moved to the Hubbard Enumeration District in the spring of 1891. William Norman was born in 1865 in Canada. (His wife?) Edith (Doran?) was born in 1876 in Minnesota. William Norman was a farmer who moved directly to the Hubbard Enumeration District in October, 1890. On June 19, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated them 56th in Hubbard Township. Living with them In 1895 were William Doran,18, and Cary Doran, 13. NUGENT John S. Nugent was born in 1866 in Wisconsin. His wife, Lena, waS born in 1870 in Wisconsin. Her father was also born abroad. Their daughter, Lucy M., was born April 5, 1892, in Hubbard County. On June 20, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them ninth in Straight River Township. John was a farmer who moved to Straight River in 1882. In the 1920s John Nugent owned land in sections 10 and 16 of Straight River Township. Mathew Nugent was born in 1821 in Ireland. His wife, Mary Ann (Berthier?) was born in 1835 in Ohio. Children: Mary A. was born in 1857 in Wisconsin; Margaret was born in 1862 in Wisconsin; Edward was born in 1863 in Wisconsin; John was born in 1866 in Wisconsin; Elizabeth was born In 1868 in Wisconsin; Patrick was born in 1870 in Wisconsin; and Catherine was born in 1876 in Wisconsin. The Nugents moved to Straight River in 1882. In May 1885 John Moran enumerated the household 9th in Straight River. John Berthier, age 51, lived with the family. Mathew died July 4, 1893. On June 20, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated his widow's family seventh in Straight River Township. Living with them in 1895 was John Berthier, age 60. Mathew E. Nugent was born in 1863 in Wisconsin. His wife, Florence, was born in 1874 in Canada. Children: Mary Jeanette was born March 21, 1893, in Hubbard County; Catherine Elizabeth was born in March 5, 1895, in Hubbard County. On June 20, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them eighth in Straight River Township. Mathew was a farmer who moved to Straight River in 1882. NYE Droctor George Nye was born March 12, 1845, in Indiana. His father, Ira C. Nye, was born in Connecticut and his mother, Elizabeth Pardell, was born in Ohio. Children: His daughter(?), Winna, was born in 1874 in in Vermont; Charles P. was born in 1880 in Minnesota. In 1870 George graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. He practiced medicine in Papillion, Sarpy County, Nebraska, for three years before moving to Houston County, Minnesota, in 1877. He moved from Caledonia to Wadena County in the 1880s. Doctor Nye was a full-time physician when he moved to Manter (Hubbard) in 1886. In 1889 he bought 400 acres near Hubbard, where he combined farming with his position as United States Examining Surgeon for pensions. Eventually he farmed 560 acres. On June 5, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the Nye's Page 109 36th in Hubbard. Dr. Nye served as County Coroner from January 1897 until January 1899. He was a Mason, a Knight Templar, and a nominal Democrat. OAKLEY Mr. Oakley from Wadena was soon to open a grocery on the corner of First and Lake in Manter according to the August 3, 1882, Enterprise. O'BRIEN Doctor Charles O'Brien was born in 1826 or 1827 in New York. His father was born abroad. His wife, Mary J., (Sloan?) was born in 1829 or 1830 in England. Charles enlisted in Company G of the 50th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment February 11, 1865. He was discharged June 14, 1866, as a private. His son Leon was born in 1866 in Wisconsin. Charles was a physician who moved directly to Straight River in 1879. On June 29, 1880, William Denley enumerated Charles in township 139/140 of Cass County. He was married but his wife had not yet joined him. In May 1885 John Moran enumerated the family 13th in Straight River. Caroline Sloan, age 19, lived with them. In June 1890 Dr. Walling enumerated Charles 100th in Park Rapids. On June 20, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Charles and Mary second in Straight River Township. Mary O'Brian died January 11, 1904. Charles O'Brian, perhaps a grandson, died May 19, 1891. Katie O'Brian was to teach the Shell City school again in the winter, according to the September 21, 1882, Enterprise. She was congratulated for her teaching during the summer term. She was to complete her high School in Verndale in December, according to the November 30, 1882, Enterprise. Leon O'Brian was born in 1866 in Wisconsin. His wife, Samantha, was born in 1874 in Minnesota, Children: Roy was born in 1893 in Minnesota; Clifford was born March 2, 1895, in Hubbard County. On June 20, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them third in Straight River Township. Leon was a farmer who moved to Straight River Township two years after his father, in 1881. Michael O'Brien was born in 1811 in Ireland. He may have been a brother of Charles. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated him with the family of M. McDonald, 58th in Hubbard. Other O'Brian children whose parentage I have not verified: Wallace F. O'Brien was born August 21, 1888, in Hubbard County. An O'Brien girl was born November 2, 1889, in Hubbard County. Charles Albert O'Brien was born November 8, 1891, in Hubbard County. Alice Muriel O'Brien was born March 20, 1894, in Hubbard County. Willie O'Brien was born December 28, 1897, in Hubbard County. "Old Short and Dirty" was a medicine woman who used to arrive in the Hubbard area each year when the snakeroot was in bloom (mature?). Jan Pike relates several tales about her in the Centennial Edition of the Enterprise (history section, p. 1 1). She would collect snakeroot, which was a medicinal herb, and sell it on her return to White Earth for the winter. Although she carried money from her trade, she was never robbed or bothered. She was so nondescript that she was once mistaken for a bundle left on someone's stoop. When she was invited in for porridge she consumed it hungrily and then brought out her pipe, not a calumet, and lit it with her flint and steel. It was customary among the Chippewas to feed whoever appeared appeared at their door, so they accordingly walked into settlers houses and sat down until they were fed. One fall the withered old lady simply disappeared without returning to the reservation, and no one ever found her secret patch of snakeroot. O'NEIL J. H. O'Neil owned the most valuable new building in Park Rapids in 1892. His hotel was valued at $8000.00! OLESON Martin Oleson was born in 1858 in Sweden. His wife, Hannah, was born in 1857 in Canada. Children: Bertha was born in 1884 in Minnesota; Lula was born in 1885 in Page 110 Minnesota; George W, was born November 17, 1886, in Hubbard Township; Alice was born in 1889 in Minnesota; Nellie was born In 1893 in Minnesota; Ida Mabel was born August 9, 1894, in Hubbard Township. Martin was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1869 and to the Hubbard Enumeration District In the spring of 1880. On June 28, 1880, William Denley enumerated him in township 139/140 of Cass County. On June 18, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the Olson's 44th in Hubbard County. ORDWAY Frank E. Ordway was born in 1847(?) in Maine, possibly in Waldo or Penobscot county, His parents were also born in Maine. His wife, Harriet (Cole?), was born in 1859 in Wisconsin. On June 29, 1880, William Denley enumerated Frank as single in township 139/140 of Cass County. Children: Alice weighed 8 1/2 pounds when she was born in Straignt River, according to the November 23, 1882, Enterprise; Elmer was born in 1884 in Minnesota; Cleveland was born about January 1885 In Minnesota; Jim Ordway was born November 15, 1887, in Hubbard County; another Ordway son was born October 24, 1889, in Hubbard County. The August 10, 1882, Enterprise states that Frank bought B. A. Manter's saw mill and that Frank would thresh crops on the second prairie and run the saw mill during the next winter. The September 14, 1882, Enterprise records that Frank was using Manter's old thresher and engine on the third prairie. In May 1885 John Moran enumerated the family 14th in Straight River. Living with them was Leander Cole, age 31. Frank served as Court Commissioner from January 1889 until January 1891. Ernest Ordway was born May 10, 1885, in Hubbard County. In 1800 John and Amos Ordway lived in Cumberland County and another John Ordway lived in York County, in Maine. Earlier Ordways had settled in Watertown Massachusetts by the 1640's. O'SHEA Jerry O'Shea was born in 1860 in Canada. His wife, Margaret J., was born in 1862 in Wisconsin. Her father was born abroad. Children: Mary C. was born in 1888 in Minnesota; Joseph was born July 10, 1894, in Hubbard County. Mr. O'Shea was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1880 and to Straight River in 1889. On June 22, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 20th in Straight River Township. PALMER David Palmer was born in 1818 in Rhode Island. His parents were also born in Rhode Island. His wife, Annie, was born in 1832 in Ohio. Her parents were born in New York. On June 25, 1880, William Denley enumerated them in township 139/140 of Cass County, PANKOW Reverend A. P. Pankow of Wadena began to provide regular services for a Lutheran congregation there in 1885 and he confirmed the first class of Lutherans in Dorset in 1889. Lutherans in Park Rapids were served by visiting pastors at Dorset until there were enough to warrant separate services at the Mueller School, five miles northwest of Park Rapids. PARKER Captain Charles C. Parker and his sons moved from Steele County with William Casier (Enterprise, August 3, 1882). The August 17, 1882, Enterprise reports Captain Parker (then postmaster in Verndale and candidate for state legislature?) was laying out the town of Carson, near present-day Osage. He was still surveying the Shell Prairie by September 28. PARKS Henry Parks was born in June 1836 or 1837 in New York. His first wife had died by 1885. Children by his first wife: (?)James was born in October 1860 in New York; Cora was born in 1870 in New York; Sadie was born in 1875 in New York; Albert was born in 1882 in Minnesota; Archie was born in 1884 in Minnesota. Jessie J., apparently his second wife, was born in 1863 in Iowa. Children by his second wife: Page 1ll Albina was born September 7, 1890, in Hubbard County; Caroline was born in 1891 in Minnesota; George 0. was born in 1893 in Minnesota; Ethel R. was born February 16, 1895, in Minnesota. Henry was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1878. On May 6, 1885, John Terweale enumerated them 22nd in Elbow Lake. Henry moved to the Henrietta Enumeration District in the spring of 1893. On June 11, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 43 in Henrietta Township. Allen S. Parks owned land in section six of Hubbard Township in the 1920s. Jesse Parks was born in 1862 in New York. His wife, Mary E., was born in 1868 in Germany. Children: Max August Edward was born October 7, 1888 in Hubbard County; Florence was born In 1892 In Minnesota. Jesse was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1878 and to the Henrietta Enumeration District In the spring of 1890. Jesse G. Parks served as county surveyor from January 1891 until January 1893. On June 11, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 34th in Henrietta Township. Pascall Parks was born in 1855 in New York. His wife, Sarah E. (Harris?), was born in 1863 In Minnesota. Children: George W. was born In 1883 in Minnesota; Eugene D. was born in 1887 in Minnesota; Herbert S. was born in 1890 in Minnesota; Mabel B. was born in 1893 in Minnesota. On June 11, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 164th in Park Rapids. Living with them was Hannah Harris, age 75, and a large crew of men, perhaps a lumber crew for Herman Ellersick, Including G.W. Adams, V. Bemis, Abe Breenesen (?), John Jeanquenat (?), Frank Kolar (?), Marty Kortjaval (?), Albert Lemke, Mike Loyd, Frank Marshier, M.S. Phelps, Charles Runhoilz (?), P.D. Sackett, and Gust Witte. Pascall Parks was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1865 and to Park Rapids in March, 1893. R. G. Parks was born in 1865 in Minnesota. His wife, Sabla H., was born in 1866 in Canada. Children: Eva was born in 1892 in Dakota; Jennie was born in August, 1894, in Minnesota. Mr. Parks was a mill-hand who moved to Park Rapids in January, 1894. On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 24th in Park Rapids. PAUPST Katy Paupst was born in 1864 in Canada. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated her with the family of S. L. Doran, another Canadian, 35th in Hubbard. PAVITT William H. Pavitt was born in 1853 in New York. His wife, Mary L., Was born in 1856 in Minnesota. Children: Ida was born in 1875 in Minnesota; Josephine was born in 1878 in Minnesota; Charles was born in 1879 in Minnesota; Frank was born in 1881 in Minnesota; Minnie was born in 1878 in Minnesota; Eunice was born in 1891 in Minnesota; Perry was born in 1893 (April 20, 1892?) in Minnesota. William was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1857, when he was four, and to the Hubbard Enumeration District in April, 1888. On June 20. 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 63rd in Hubbard Township. PERKINSON Frank Perkinson (Parkinson?) was born In 1864 in Indiana. His wife, Catherine, was born in 1870 in Minnesota. Her father was born abroad. Children: Ray was born in 1887 in Minnesota; Cuyler was born in 1889 in Minnesota; Carrie was born in 1891 in Minnesota. Frank was a farmer who moved to Minnesota when he was a year old and to Todd Township in 1885. On June 18, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 49th in Todd Township. PETE Richard Pete was born in 1856 in Canada. In June 1895 J. C. Bullock enumerated him and Octave Carpenter, age 43, seventh in Nevis Township. Richard was a lumberman who moved to Minnesota in 1872. Bernice Maud Peets was born July 24, 1886, in Hubbard County. She may have been Richard's daughter. Page 112 PELKA Peter Pelka was born in 1826 in Canada. His parents were also born in Canada. His wife, Melia, was born in 1823 in Canada. Her parents were also born in Canada. On June 25, 1880, William Denley enumerated him in township 139/140 of Cass County. PELL George Pell was born in 1848 in England. His wife, Wabasisch, was a Chippewa born in 1862 in Minnesota. Their son Willie was born in 1883 in Minnesota. In May 1885 John Terweale enumerated them 10th in Elbow Lake . PETERS Alfred Peters was born in 1840 in England. On June 25, 1880, William Denley enumerated him in township 139/140 of Cass County. At that time he was married, but had not yet brought his wife to the frontier. Blanche Petrie was born May 28, 1885, in Hubbard County. PETRIE Daniel Petrie was born May 6, 1857, at Parish, in Osage County New York. His first wife, Jane Rockwell, was born in New York in 1863. They were married at Kasson, in Dodge county Minnesota, in 1880. Children: Leroy was born in 1883 in Minnesota; Idelia 0. was born in 1888 in Minnesota; Frederick was born in 1892 in Minnesota. Dan Petrie was a farmer and lumberman who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1874. In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated them 55th in Park Rapids. Dan moved to the Henrietta Enumeration district in the spring of 1894. On June 12, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 48th in Henrieffa Township. Living with Dan's family in 1895 were his wife's father, James W. Rockwell, a 54 year old farmer, and Levi Putnam, a 36 year old engineer, both born in New York. Dan ran six lumber mills, in Hubbard, Nevis, Badoura and Lake Ida between 1896 until 1902, In 1900 he married May Beal in Park Rapids. In 1892 his new house and barn in Park Rapids were valued at $500.00. Dan served as county sheriff from January 1901 until January 1927. In 1903 he married Laura Kouen. Larkin O.Petrie was born in 1862 in New York. His wife, Georgiana, was born in New York in 1866 or 1867. Children; Paul was born about August 1884 in Minnesota; Cecil was born in 1888 in Minnesota; Clyde Kenneth was born April 10, 1890, in Hubbard County; Lina May was born January 17, 1894, in Hubbard County. Loren was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1876 and to Park Rapids in 1885. In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated them 49th in Park Rapids. On June 12, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 171st in Park Rapids. Loren D. Petrie was born in 1833 in New York. His wife, Angeline Fritts was born there in 1835. He served as a private in Company A of the New York Home Guards for three years. Children: Daniel was born in 1857 in New York; Larkin was born in 1862 in New York; Frank was born in 1865 in New York; Louise was born in 1868 in New York; and Walter was born in 1878, after the family moved to Minnesota in 1873; Lina May, perhaps a grand daughter, was born January 17, 1894. In May 1865 Sam Churchill enumerated Loren 43rd in Park Rapids. In June 1890 Dr. Walling enumerated Loren 12th in Park Rapids. In 1892 Loren's new house in Park Rapids was valued at $1600.00, one of the most expensive in town. Loren died June 10, 1896. In the 1920s Leola Petrie owned land in 27 of Henrietta Township. Roy Petrie owned the N,E quarter of section 30 in Henrieffa Township. S. D. Petrie was born in 1834 in New York. His wife, Angeline, was born in New York in 1836. Children: Frank was born in 1865 in New York; Walter was born in 1879 in Minnesota. Mr. Petrie was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1877 and to Hubbard County in December, 1883. On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 53rd in Park Rapids. Living with them in 1895 were Lizzle Batger, 28, and Frank J. Rockwell, PETTIT H. Pettit of Osage, Iowa, paid a visit to Park Rapids noted in the September 21, 1882, Enterprise. Page 113 PEYNSKI Julius Peynski (Piyniski, Peysensky ... ) was born in 1843 in Germany. His wife, Augusta, was born in Germany in 1839. They probably came to America about 1869. His wife may have died young, leaving several children: Sena was born in 1870 in Wisconsin; Ida was born in 1872 in Wisconsin; Frank was born in 1874 in Wisconsin; Mary was born in 1876 in Iowa; Lizzie was born in 1878 or 1879 in Iowa; and Clara was born in 1881 in Iowa; Lena was born in 1889 in Minnesota. Possibly due to illness, financial troubles, or travel plans, Julius advertised in the Enterprise issue of November 30, 1883, for families to take in "four fine girls and a boy." Julius was a farmer who moved directly to the Henrietta Enumeration District in Minnesota in September, 1880. In May 1885 John Terweale enumerated them all together, with Henry Zosel, age 4, In the 17th household in Elbow Lake. On June 10, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 30th in Henrietta Township. Living with the family in 1895 so were Henry Zosel, 14, and Christ Burmeister, 23. Henry Zosel may have been Juliu' grandson. Mary Peysensky (Peyinski), a daughter of Julius, was born in 1876 in Iowa. Her parents were born abroad. On June 17, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated her In the household of Lewis Zimbrick, 37th in Todd Township. Mary was then working as a chore girl. Mike Peinsky (Piyniskis, etc.: the name is spelled differently in every document) was born in September 1845 in Germany. His wife, Katherine (Guenthart?), was born in March 1853 in Switzerland. Children: Eddy Peynskie born in 1884 in Minnesota; Otille (Tillie) was born in June 1885 in Minnesota. She later lived in a little white vine-covered cottage behind the Carnegie Library; William was born in 1888 in Minnesota. Katherine may have been married previously, and had children who lived with them in 1885; Minnie Wilken born in 1879 in Iowa; and Albert Wilken born in 1881 in Minnesota. Mike was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1870 and to the Henrietta Enumeration District in the spring of 1881 ' In May 1885 John Terweale enumerated them first In Elbow Lake. On June 8, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated them 19th in Henrietta Township. Living with the family were Minnie Wilkins, 16, and Albert Wilkins, 13. In the 1920s Catherine Peyenski owned land in section 27 of Henrietta Township. Mike Peysinski owned land south of Peysinski Lake in sections 22 and 27 of Henrietta Township. PEYSENSKE Harve Wafter Peysenske was baptized in St. John's Evangelical congregation. William Frank Peysenske was born April 21, 1888, in Hubbard County. PHELPS Luther Phelps became a charter member of E. S. Frazier Post 147 of the G. A. R. in January 1886. The August 17, 1882, Enterprise mentions that his son (unnamed) was injured three miles west of town while driving from Park Rapids to their home seven miles west of town. The boy jumped off their load to open some bars and slipped under the wagon, which passed over his body just above the hips without breaking bones but with internal injuries. In the September 28, 1882, Enterprise Luther advertised to trade his team of horses for a yoke of oxen. M. S. Phelps was born in 1870 in Minnesota. He moved to Park Rapids in 1893. Hinds enumerated the family first in Henrietta Township. Reverend W. M. Pickard, who was born abroad, succeeded William Rice as pastor of the First Methodist Church in Park Rapids Church in 1890. He started construction of a new 28 x 52 foot church in the spring of 1891 and the church was consecrated on September 21, 1891. The spire "gratefully reached heavenward" 70 feet. The church and property, located at First and Pleasant, where Vry's machine shop used to be, cost $1750.00. All the ministers in town held all-day services and contacted their members and non-members to secure pledges for the final $500.00 of the cost. Reverend Pickard spoke at the fifth anniversary of the founding of the E. S. Frazier Post of the G. A. R. in April 1891. Reverend Pickard was succeeded as pastor by George W. Empey. Rebecca Taller, age 60, lived with them. In 1887 Charles was a member of the school board. Charles died August 18, 1888. On June 8, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Mary 98th in Park Rapids. Living with Mary was Rebecca Fuller, born in 1828 in New York. Frank C. Rice was born March 4, 1834, in New York. His parents, Benjamin Rice Jr. and Mary Maltby, were also born in New York. His wife, Frances C. Wells, was born December 6, 1838, in New York. Her parents were born In Connecticut. They were married about 1873. Frank moved to Mitchell County, Iowa, in 1855. There he taught, built and operated grist and saw mills. From 1867 until 1873 Frank and his two brothers lived in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, where he founded the town of Dell Rapids. From 1878 to 1881 he ran a real estate business in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At Page 120 that time he acquired several hundred acres in Todd Township and moved his family to Park Rapids in the spring of 1881. Frank named his townsite "Park Rapids", after the prairie clearings and groves along the rapids of the Fish Hook river, on July 4, 1881. That same year he build a dam on Fish Hook River which powered a rolling stone grain mill and a sawmill west of the old foot bridge. In the August 3, 1882, Enterprise Frank advertised "Notary Public, Conveyancing, Real Estate, Insurance, Loans and Collections." The August 10, 1882, Enterprise reported that Frank and his wife had just left to visit friends and relatives in New York and attend the famous Chautauqua assembly for a few days. Frank returned October 16, according to the October 26, 1882, Enterprise. Frank was appointed first postmaster that same year and he was appointed register of deeds by the three commissioners on March 28, 1883, and served until November 23, 1883. In 1885 he was a founding member of the Wadena and Park Rapids Railway company. In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated Frank 62nd in Park Rapids. On June 4, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Frank's family 14th in Park Rapids. F. C. Rice served as Judge of Probate from October 3, 1898, completing the term of S. J. Boorom, until January 1901. In January 1900 Frank could be reached by phone at home by asking the operator for "53.1' Gilbert H. Rice was born in October 1839 in New York. His parents, Benjamin Rice Jr. and Mary Maltby, were also born in New York. His wife, Martha A. Pierce, was born in 1849 in Wisconsin. Her parents' visit from Riceville, Iowa, is reported in the August 17 & 24, 1882, Enterprise. Children: Edith was born in August 1867 in Iowa and married F.A. Vanderpoel in 1888; Leonard was born March 19, 1869(?), in Iowa; Arthur S.was born in 1878 in Iowa; Ethel E. was born in 1881 In Iowa. Gilbert was a miller who moved directly to Park Rapids, Minnesota, in the spring of 1881 Martha taught a Baptist Sunday school in her home. Gilbert served as Judge of Probate Court from November 23, 1883, until January 1887. In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated them 34th in Park Rapids. On June 8, 1890, Gilbert and his wife became charter members of the First Baptist Church. In 1891 Gilbert added $2500.00 in improvements to his flour mill and $500.00 worth of additions to his $400.00 house. On June 4, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family ninth in Park Rapids. Living with them was a maid, Mary Hanson, 18, born in Sweden. In January 1900 Gilbert could be reached by phone at home by dialing "25." Leonard H. Rice (see photo after text) was born in 1869 in Iowa. His wife, Cora E., was born in 1874 in Minnesota. Children: Freda was born in 1891 in Minnesota; Vera was born in 1893 in Minnesota. Leonard was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1881 and to Straight River in 1887. L. H. Rice owned a machine warehouse valued at $400.00 in 1891. On June 25, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 35th in Straight River Township, next to Tom Wilcox. In January 1900 he could be reached by phone at home by asking the operator for "5" and at the flour mill by asking for 1121." Leonard was elected to the state legislature in 1910 and he owned land in sections one, two and ten of Todd Township in the 1920s. William Rice succeeded Reverend Dawson as pastor of the First Methodist Church in Park Rapids in about 1890. Reverend Rice was succeeded by Reverend W. E. Pickard. The Rice family may also have New England roots, dating back to the 1640's. RICHARDS Bert Richards was born in 1862 in Illinois. His wife, Effie, was born in 1875 in Iowa. Children: Theo was born in 1892 in Minnesota; Becca Ruby was born April 3, 1895, in Hubbard County. Bert was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1882. Bert also drove the stage for Stewart's line to Shell City, according to the October 26, 1882, Enterprise. He resided in Straight River Township in 1887. On June 20, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Bert's family fourth in Straight River Township. Page 121 Earl Richards died July 25, 1891, in Hubbard County. RICKER Enos M. Ricker was born in 1860 in Iowa. His wife, Cora M., was born in 1866 in Indiana. Children: Elsie E. was born in 1891 in Iowa; Bell was born in 1893 in Minnesota; a son was born October 27, 1894, in Park Rapids. Living with them was Grace E. Page, 24. Enos was a printer who moved to Minnesota in July, 1890, and to Park Rapids in April, 1892. Enos M. Ricker's Park Rapids new house was valued at $300.00 in 1892. He and A. W. Page had bought the "Enterprise" from Henry Cobb on July 7, 1892, and he bought Mr. Page's share on December 22, 1893. On December 28, 1894, W. S. Foster invested in a partnership with Mr. Ricker, who ran the machinery while Mr. Foster assumed editorial and business responsibilities for a year. On May 1, 1895 Mr. Ricker sold the "Enterprise" to R. E. Davis. On April 8, 1898, Mr. Ricker bought back the "Enterprise" from Mr. Davis, and on December 30, 1898, he sold half-interest in the paper to W. J. Conard. On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the Rickers 34th in Park Rapids. Hazen Ricker was born in August 1828 in Vermont, probably in Washington or an adjoining county. His parents were born in Vermont. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in October 1831 in New Hampshire. Her parents were born in New Hampshire. They were married about 1850. Children: May, was born on May 1, 1869, in Iowa and later married William Conard; a daughter was born December 26, 1892, and a son was born October 27,1894, in Hubbard County; Lyle was born June 30, 1896, in Hubbard County. Hazen Ricker homesteaded 160 acres north of Park Rapids. In the July 25,1882, issue of the Park Rapids Enterprise Mr. Ricker advertised his new harness shop. Hazen's family joined him in his new house north of Park Rapids on August 11, 1882 (Enterprise, August 17, 1882). Hazen, Tom Buck and Charles Rice went on excursions to explore the countryside. In the August 10, 1882, Enterprise reported that on July 22 they successfully forded the upper end of Long Lake and found level driving six miles streight south to Manter along the east side of Long lake. This was better than the winding old Manter road. The October 12, 1882, Enterprise reports that Hazen was about to move his harness shop about two lots north of the Enterprise office. In 1882 Hazen volunteered the front of his shop as a school room. In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated them 56th in Park Rapids. In 1892 Hazen (Enos?) added $100.00 worth of improvements to his property in Park Rapids. RIMA Albert Rima was born in November 1839 (?) in Illinois, probably in Stephenson county. His parents were born in Ohio. His wife, Maggie (Currie?), was born in November 1851 (1857?) in Scotland. Children: Cora was born in 1873 in Wisconsin; Fred was born in 1877 or 1878 in Minnesota; and Hannah was born about November 1884 in Minnesota; Flossie was born in 1885 in Minnesota. Albert moved to Minnesota in 1868. His family moved from Mapleton, in Blue Earth County, to Park Rapids in 1883. . In February 1884 Albert built a 40' x 60' general merchandise store at third and Main with lumber hauled by horse wagon from Verndale. In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated them 39th in Park Rapids. On November 26, 1890, Albert was elected to the village council. In 1891 Rima's new store in Park Rapids was valued at $5000.00, the second most valuable new building in town. In 1892 Fred's wife became vice president of the Ladies Improvement Club, which initiated many civic projects such as a free library, locks on the Potato River, wooden sidewalks, and garbage cans and lights on the streets. On June 6, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the Rimas 64th in Park Rapids. Living with them was James Currie, age 66. In January 1900 Mr. Rima could be reached by phone at his general store by asking the operator for "60." George Rima's house in Park Rapids was valued at $900.00 in 1891. Thomas Rima was born in 1869 in Minnesota. His wife, Effie, was born in 1871 in Minnesota. Tom was a lumberman who moved to Straight River in 1886. He was a Page 122 member of F. A. Vanderpoel's reorganized viiiage band in May, 1895. On June 24, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Tom and Effie 32nd in Straight River Township. RIPLEY William Ripley was born in 1869 in Illinois. On June 25, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated him 39th in Straight River Township. William was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1886 and to Straight River in the spring of 1889. ROBINSON H. E. Robinson advertised a blacksmith shop located near the Hotel in Shell City in the July 25, 1882, issue of the Enterprise. He shod the horses and repaired the plows needed to farm in those days. He and his dogs captured two coons on the bank of the Shell River by the sawmill, according to the November 30, 1882, Enterprise. Joel Robinson enlisted in Company I of the 6th Michigan H.H. (?) in January 1864. He was discharged June 27, 1865, as a private. In June 1890 M. M. Loring enumerated him, suffering from chronic diarrhea and heart trouble, 77th in Hubbard. A Robinson boy was born February 3, 1891, in Hubbard County. ROCKWELL Charles H. Rockwell was born in 1855 in Minnesota. His wife was born in the United States, but was not living in 1895. Children: Ada was born in 1882 in Minnesota; Chlouy (Chloe) was born in 1883 in Minnesota; Annie was born in 1884 in Minnesota; Milo S. Was Born in 1887 in Minnesota; Estella May was born July 21, 1889, in Hubbard County; Lulu was born in 1892 in Minnesota; Frank Junior was born in 1894 in Minnesota. Charles was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in January, 1887, and to the Henrietta Enumeration District in the spring of 1890. On June 11, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 42nd in Henrietta township. Living with the family were Godfrey Nelson, 35, and Henry Lewis, 19. Charles Rockwell served as a county commissioner from September 1892 until January 1897. Rockwood Township was originally named In his honor. Frank J Rockwell was born in 1894 in Minnesota. On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated him in the household of S. D. Petrie, 53rd in Park Rapids. The census entry shows his parents as "born abroad". James W. Rockwell was born in April 1840 in New York. James was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1875 and to the Henriefla Enumeration District in the spring of 1882. In May 1885 John Terweale enumerated him 25th in Elbow Lake. In November 1883 James was appointed a judge of the election in commissioner district 1, which voted at Asher Blunt's house near Elbow Lake. After the hard winter of 1894 Charles Rockwell was sent to Hunter, North Dakota, to obtain seed which the county auditor could distribute among the farmers. On June 12, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated him with the family of his son-in-law, Dan Petrie, 48th in Henrietta Township. RODIN Swan (Sven) Rodin was born in Sweden. He had been a glassblower in Illinois before his doctor advised that he move north among the pine trees for his health. Swan Rodin Homesteaded the southeast quarter of section six in Crow Wing Township in 1886. Sven Rodin was appointed first postmaster of the Pineview Post Office on May 11, 1900. The Pineview Post Office was merged with Hubbard on January 31, 1902. Swan started a bean cleaning house in Nevis in 1915 and he was instrumental in bringing the telephone to Dorset. Swan's daughter, Emma, married John Avenson. ROGERS Milton Rogers of Third Prairie was staying at Doctor Walling's, according to the November 30, 1882, Enterprise. RONNING S. M. Ronning was born in 1864 in Norway. In May 1885 he was living with J.W. Jay, enumerated 41st in Park Rapids. He taught school in Park Rapids under a provisional three month contract, which was extended through two years because Page 123 everyone was pleased with his character and and his knowledge. Mr. Ronning came recommended by the president of the State Normal School at St. Cloud. ROSE Bruce Rose died April 30, 1893, in Hubbard County. Fred Rose's new house in Park Rapids was valued at $500.00 in 1892. Henry M. Rose was born in 1839 in New York. His wife, Harriet M., was born in 1846 in Pennsylvania. On June 13, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them sixth in Todd Township. Children still at home: Harry L. was born In 1877 in Iowa; Blanche E. was born in 1879 in Iowa; May M. was born August 19, 1892, in Hubbard County. Henry was a carpenter who moved to Minnesota in 1888 and to Todd Township in February, 1 889. William Rose was born in 1868 in Iowa. His wife, Rose A., was born in 1874 in the Indian Territory. Their daughter, Ella V., was born February 2, 1894, in Hubbard County. William was a carpenter who moved to Minnesota in 1883 and to Park Rapids in 1892, Will Rose's new house In Park Rapids was valued at $200.00 In 1892. Will played on the Park Rapids baseball team in June 1892. On June 11, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 167th in Park Rapids. ROSSMAN Frank W. Rossman was born in 1859 or 1860 in Minnesota. His wife, Gertrude, was born in Minnesota In 1865. Children: Ray William was born in Minnesota January 6, 1885, and died June 17, 1894, in Hubbard County; Earl was born June 26, 1890, in Hubbard County. Frank was a lumberman. He served as county surveyor from November 23, 1883, until he resigned on September 10, 1886. In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated the Rossmans 46th in Park Rapids. On January 26, 1886, Gertrude sang the chorus of "Sleeping for the Flag" with Joe Blood and M. W. Vandewater at a G. A. R. celebration. In 1888 Frank joined a surveying party trying to locate the best possible route for extending the railroad north from Eagle Bend, where It had reached by 1881. Frank moved to Straight River Township about 1889. In June 1890 Frank enumerated veterans living in the Elbow Lake census district. On November 26, 1890, Frank was elected justice of the peace. In 1892 Frank made a $250.00 addition to his house in Park Rapids. Frank played on the Park Rapids baseball team in June, 1892. In May, 1895, Frank was a member of F. A. Vanderpoells reorganized village band. On June 24, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated him 31st in Straight River Township. In January 1900 Frank could be reached by phone at home by asking the operator for "9." ROUNTREE James Rountree advertised as a blacksmith, shoeing horses, fixing plows, and lumber work in Park Rapids in the July 25, 1882, issue of the Park Rapids Enterprise, "A weekly exponent of the interests of the Shell Prairies." RUE John C. Rue was born in September 1840 in Ohio. His parents were born in Ohio or Pennsylvania. Annie C. Rue, perhaps John's first wife, died October 24, 1887, in Hubbard County. He married his wife, Maggie, about 1889. She was born in January 1859 in Kentucky. Her parents were also born in Kentucky. Children: Lulu Marian was born April 6, 1890, in Hubbard County; twins, Jesse and John, were born March 20, 1893, in Hubbard County, but John Junior died February 26, 1894. John C. Rue enlisted in Company A of the 19th Ohio Volunteer Regiment April 15, 1861. He was discharged August 24, 1861. He re-enlisted in Company B of the 65th Ohio Volunteer Regiment September 18, 1861. He was finally discharged December 14, 1864, as a private. John was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1880 and to Park Rapids in 1881. The September 14, 1882, Enterprise records that he finished his house south of Park Rapids on the previous day. The November 16, 1882, Enterprise gives notice that John had given final proof in support of his homestead claim on the S.E. 1/4 of section 26-140-35 in Cass County to the land office in St. Cloud. D. H. Freeman recorded that Page 124 the following had attested to John's continuous residence on and cultivation of that land: Charles Churchill, Charles F. Rice, Robert F. Shields, Cilbert H. Rice, all of Park Rapids. On January 26, 1886, John became a charter member of E. S. Frazier Post 147 of the G. A. R. In June 1890 Dr. Walling enumerated him 71st in Park Rapids. In 1892 John made $300.00 worth of additions to his house in Park Rapids. On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 29th in Park Rapids. In January 1900 he was waiting for his new phone to be installed. RUMBAUGH Bob Rumbaugh had a hardware store in Hubbard. He served as county sheriff from January 1897 until January 1901. RUTHERFORD Anna Rutherford, born in 1876 in Wisconsin, was living with the Watermans in June, 1895. Anna Belle Rutherford was born September 6, 1893, in Hubbard County. Elbert Rutherford was born in August 1861 in Iowa. His father was born in Kentucky and his mother was born in Indiana. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated him living alone in house 14 in the Manter district. In 1900. He served as County Coroner from January 1891 until January 1893. E. A. (Emory Archer?) Rutherford was born in 1861 in Iowa. His wife, Hattie E., was born in Iowa in 1865. Children: Emery Archer was born July 11, 1888, in Hubbard County; May was born in 1890 in Minnesota; Guy was born in October, 1894, in Minnesota. On June 4, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated the family first in Crow Wing Township, Mr. Rutherford was a Farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1881 and to Crow Wing Township in 1882. George W. Rutherford was born in 1820 in Kentucky, possibly in Todd county. His father was born in Kentucky and his mother was born in North Carolina. His wife, Rachel Jester, was born in 1822(?) in Ohio. Her parents were born in Vermont. Children: Mary M. was born in 1846 in Indiana, George was born in March 1852 in Indiana; Albert was born in 1859 in Iowa; Oriena was born in 1862 in Iowa; Alvin was born in 1872 in Minnesota. On June 30, 1880, William Denley enumerated the family in township 139/140 of Cass County. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated George 34th in Hubbard, six houses away from Miles Sanford. In January 1886 George became a charter member of E. S. Frazier Post 147 of the G. A. R. In June 1890 M. M. Loring enumerated him 93rd in Hubbard, two houses away from Miles Sanford. George died January 25, 1893, in Hubbard County. George W. Rutherford, son of the above, was born in March 1852 in Indiana. His father was born in Kentucky and mother was born in Vermont(?). His first wife, Minnie, was born in 1865 in Germany. They were married after 1880. His second wife, Florence (Olson?), was born in 1860 in Ohio. Florence's parents were born outside the United States. Children: Retty was born in 1884 in Minnesota; Frank was born in 1886 in Minnesota; Anna Belle was born September 6, 1893, In Hubbard County. It may have been this George Rutherford who enlisted in the 38th Iowa Infantry Regiment in March 1864. He was discharged in June 1865, as a private, after sustaining an eye injury. George Rutherford was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1879 and to the Hubbard Enumeration District in the spring of 1880. On June 25, 1880, William Denley enumerated George living alone in township 139/140 of Cass County. His daughter Rachel was born in 1884 in Minnesota. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated George's family 13th in the Manter district. On June 17, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated his family 43rd in Hubbard Township. George served as a county commissioner from August 6, 1906, finishing the incomplete term of W. H. Shaver, until January 1907. In the 1920s G. W. Rutherford owned the southwest quarter of section 24. of Hubbard Township. Page 125 The Rutherfords were early settlers in Kentucky, and many fought for the Confederacy. In 1790 the family of Allen Rutherford lived In Fayette County and families of Dudley, John, and Katy lived in Lincoln County. Archibald, Dudley, James, John, Joseph, Katy, Tandy, and William Rutherford all held land in Lincoln County between 1787 and 1811. On March 20, 1802, John Rutherford Jr. of Adair County, formerly part of Lincoln County, was commissioned Ensign In the 52nd Regiment of the "Cornstalk Militia." In 1810 the families of Jesse and two Joseph Rutherfords lived in Fayette County, the families of John and Susanna Rutherford lived in Franklin County, Benjamin lived in Butler County, Reuben lived in Floyd County, Stephen lived in Logan County, and Isaac lived in Wayne County. At present I do not know the immigrant ancestor of these Kentucky Rutherfords.
