Loretta A. Bean 

Mrs. Loretta A. Bean, 92, of Long Beach, California, passed away on Monday, August 
28, 2006, at Country Villa Nursing Home in Belmont Heights, California.   She was born 
June 28, 1914 in Tyre, daughter of the late Leo and Anna (Susalla) Zmich. She married 
Harry Bean on February 19, 1938 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Detroit. 
He preceded her in death on July 23, 1991.   Loretta was a homemaker her entire life. She 
loved to garden and cook. She resided with her husband in St. Clair Shores for 37 years 
before moving to San Marcos, California in 1980.   She is survived by three sisters, Irene 
Kannar, age 97, Marie Pariseau, age 94, and Celestine Wierzbicki, age 86; and nieces and 
nephews.   She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; brothers, Casimer, Isadore, 
Henry, Joseph, Clarence and Edward, one sister, Eleanor.   A graveside service will take 
place at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at St. John Catholic Cemetery in 
Ubly. The Rev. Joseph Griffin, pastor of St. John Catholic Church in Ubly, will officiate.   
Arrangements are being handled by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. 


Bertha Ida Neumann 

Bertha I. Neumann, 94, of Sebewaing, died Friday, September 8, 2006, in Tendercare 
Nursing Facility, Cass City, following a long illness.   She was born July 1, 1912 in 
Unionville to William and Louise (Bitzer) Krull. She married Edgar Adolph Neumann on 
November 29, 1940 in Unionville. He died on February 8, 1999.   Bertha worked with her 
husband on their farm. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Bertha 
enjoyed cooking, canning, sewing, needlework and gardening. She loved her flowers.   
Bertha is survived by her children, Judy (Elmer) Hahn, of Deford, Larry (Kathy) 
Neumann, of Caro, Roger Neumann, of Sebewaing; grandchildren, Joan (Jeff) Spry, 
Arnold (Cathy) Hahn, Jim (Alice) Hahn, Christopher Hahn, Ryan Neumann, Allyson 
Neumann; great-grandchildren Miranda, Sierra, James, Holly, Isaac; several nieces and 
nephews. She was preceded death by her brothers and sisters, Lillian Englehart, Martha 
Clark, Ida Roller, Edwin Krull, Walter Krull, Clara Krull and an infant brother.   Funeral 
services will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 11, 2006, in Immanuel 
Lutheran Church, Sebewaing, with the Rev. Daniel Hahn officiating. Visitation will be 
from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing.   Interment 
will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.  Pallbearers for Mrs. Neumann are Arnold 
Hahn, James Hahn, Ryan Neumann, Jerry Gross, Scott Wissner, Wayne Goebel. 


Mr. Michael James Walsh 

Mr. Michael James Walsh, 86, of Austin Township, passed away on Friday, September 8, 
2006, at his residence under hospice care.   He was born on June 26, 1920 in Tyre to the 
late Walter Joseph and Susan Gertrude (McMillan) Walsh. He married Donna Jean Smith 
on February 18, 1943 in Abilene, Texas.   Michael was a WWII veteran serving in the 
United States Army from 1942 to 1946. He was with the Headquarters Company 119th 
Armored Engineer Battalion. He was awarded two bronze stars and a victory medal. He 
farmed most of his life. He was a board member for many organizations, the Independent 
Milk Producers Association, the McDonald Dairy Committee, the American Dairy 
Council, the Cumber School Board, the St. Ignatius Parish Council and Cemetery Board, 
and the Austin Township Board of Review. He was a parishioner at St. Ignatius Catholic 
Church in Freiburg and was very involved in the renovations of the church. He enjoyed 
traveling with his wife, Donna, but always was glad to return home to the farm.   Michael 
is survived by his wife of 63 years, Donna, of Austin Township; his children, Linda 
McClain and her husband, Robert, of Davison, James Walsh and his wife, Cheryl, of 
White Lake, Rochelle Weber and her husband, Donald, of Santee, California, Cindy 
Smith and her husband, Michael, of Tarpon Springs, Florida, David Walsh and his wife, 
Karen, of Ubly, Nancy Braun and her husband, Joseph, of Ubly; 16 grandchildren; two 
great-granddaughters; three brothers, Louis Walsh and wife, Rosalie, of Ubly, Joseph 
Walsh and his wife, Patricia, of Ubly, Daniel Walsh, of Farmington; one sister, Susan 
Brown, of LaMesa, California.   He was preceded in death by four brothers, Mark "Pete", 
Leo, Raymond and Maurice Walsh; two sisters, Lila Lamphere and Beatrice Bauman.   A 
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 11, 2006, at St. Ignatius Catholic 
Church of Freiburg. The Rev. Joseph Griffin, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the 
church cemetery.   Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Zinger-Smigielski 
Funeral Home, Ubly, and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday at the church.   Memorials may 
be made to the St. Ignatius Church or Heartland Hospice.

Anthony Joseph Baker 

Our arms are empty, our hearts are broken. As the parents of Anthony Joseph Baker, we 
are sad to announce that our son was stillborn on Saturday, September 9, 2006, in Huron 
Medical Center, Bad Axe. As Anthony's parents, Aaron and Kristie (Radabaugh) Baker, 
we thank you for your prayers and for sharing our sorrow.   Anthony will also be missed 
by his grandparents, Willa Radabaugh, of Caro, Rick (Brenda) Radabaugh, of Chesaning, 
Ellen (Bill) Perdue, of Owendale, Randy Baker, of Unionville; great grandparents, Robert 
and Lois Albrecht, of Owendale, Paul and Dorothy Radabaugh, of Owendale, Donna 
Schember, of Caro; aunts and uncles, Ryan (Melanie) Radabaugh, of Burton, Bryan 
(Amanda) Baker, of Owendale, Jeff Perdue, of Wolverine, Bill Perdue Jr., of Eastport, 
Maine, and Dean Evans, of Chesaning.   Anthony was preceded in death by his great 
grandparents, William and Anna Mae Swiastyn and Raymond Baker.   Anthony's funeral 
service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at Owendale United 
Methodist Church, Owendale, with Pastor John Heim officiating. Anthony's body will be 
buried in Grant Township Cemetery with his great grandmother.   Visitation will be from 
2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday in the church before the service. Arrangements are by Dinkel-
Juengel Funeral home, Sebewaing.   Memorials may be made to the Family Discretionary 
Fund. 


James John Dodt 

James John Dodt, 77, of Sand Point and formerly of Farmington Hills, died peacefully in 
his sleep surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, September 9, 2006, at Scheurer 
Hospital in Pigeon after a lengthy illness.   Jim was born February 5, 1929 in St. Clair 
Shores to the late Albert and Margaret (White) Dodt. He graduated from Assumption 
Grotto High School in 1947 and then served honorably in the Merchant Marines and the 
U.S. Air Force.   He married Avis Nelson on December 21, 1951 in Waltham, 
Massachusetts.   He then went on to a successful 42-year career at Ford and Earl Design 
Associates in Troy retiring as a vice president.   Jim was a compassionate man who had a 
zest for life and brought out the best in others. He was a proud and loving father and 
husband whose greatest passion was spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed 
an active lifestyle which included golfing, boating, fishing and taking extensive walks 
with his golden retriever and yorkie.   He was a member of St. Fabian Catholic Church in 
Farmington Hills for 38 years where he served as a Eucharistic minister. After moving to 
Sand Point, he attended St. Roch Catholic Church. In his retirement Jim became an active 
member of the Caseville Eagles FOE No. 3690 where he served many years as the 
secretary. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.   Jim is survived by the 
love of his life, his wife, Avis; he was a beloved father to James (Anne), of Gibraltar, 
Timothy, of Rochester Hills, Laurel (Randy) Brandon, of Waterford, Robert (Elizabeth), 
of Sheffield Lake, Ohio, Michelle (James) Wood, of Novi, Kim (Neal) LeBlanc, of 
Farmington Hills, Karol Miller, of Commerce Township, and Gail (John) Walker, of 
West Bloomfield; dearest papa of ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; 
devoted brother to Tom (Peg), of St. Clair Shores, Barbara Aston, of Northville, Dorothy, 
of St. Clair Shores, and Larry Plank, of Voorheis, New Jersey. He also leaves behind 
many nieces, nephews and loving friends.   He was preceded in death by his daughter, 
Karen, brother, Richard, and sister, Karol.   A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on 
Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at St. Roch Catholic Church with Fr. Ken Yaroch 
presiding. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield. Military honors will be 
provided by the Caseville American Legion. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. 
on Tuesday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel of Caseville and from 10 a.m. on 
Wednesday until the time of the Mass at the church. There will be an Eagles' Ritual at 7 
p.m. on Tuesday.    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Roch Food

Meta M. Elftman 

Meta Marie Elftman, 92, of Elkton, died Sunday, September 10, 2006.   She was born in 
Oliver Township on September 17, 1913, daughter of the late William and Dora (Roeber) 
Licht.   On December 28, 1938, she was united in marriage to Edward Elftman who 
preceded her in death on March 23, 2002 after more than 63 years of marriage.   Meta 
was a homemaker and farmed for many years with her husband in Chandler Township. 
She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, canning, and quilting. Meta never met a 
child she didn't love, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a 
lifelong member of Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon. Meta is survived by her adopted 
daughter, Cheri (Jake) Diebel, of Elkton; grandchildren, Jeff (Nicki) Diebel, of Elkton, 
and their children, Tenishia, Jeffrey, and Joel; Jennifer (Jason) Nicol, of Ubly; and Jason 
(Audrey) Diebel, of Unionville. She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Maxine (Paul) 
Walsh, of Pigeon; grandchildren, Mike (Patsy) Walsh, Beth (Tim) Kraft, Vicki (John 
Huff) Lomba, Pat (Pam) Walsh, and Brian (Kelli) Walsh; great grandchildren, Jami, 
Scott, Jayne, Kim, Joe, Jessica, Jacky, Ben, Carolyn, Nick, Daniel, and Emalee; one 
sister, Leona (Nelson) Beck, of Saginaw; one brother, Al (June) Licht, of Bad Axe; and 
many beloved nieces and nephews.   Meta was preceded in death in 1934 by her first 
husband, Oscar Niedrich, of Unionville; her sisters, Hilda Nieschulz, Louise Ziegler, 
Delores Bendrey, Lydia Licht; and brothers, Ervin, Adolph "Barney" and Werner Licht.   
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at Cross 
Lutheran Church in Pigeon with the Rev. Tom Zollman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be 
in the church cemetery.   Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 
p.m. on Tuesday at the church.   Memorials may be made to Cross Lutheran Church, 
Meals on Wheels (Huron County Commission on Aging), or Heartland Hospice.

Wilbert A. Fuerst 

Wilbert A. Fuerst, 78, of Sebewaing, died Sunday, September 10, 2006, in Scheurer 
Hospital, Pigeon.   He was born September 22, 1927 at home in Kilmanagh to Christian 
and Florence (Unger) Fuerst.   He married Bonnie Jean Nutt on July 15, 1950 in Bay 
City. She died on May 27, 1997. Wilbert was a plumber for Kundinger and Kroll 
Plumbing and Heating retiring after over 30 years. He was a member of Immanuel 
Lutheran Church and a former member of the Kilmanagh Lutheran Church Dart ball 
team. Wilbert loved Harley Davidson motorcycles. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage 
and plowing other people's gardens with his tractor. He loved cats.   Wilbert is survived 
by his sons, Kenneth (Judy) Fuerst, of Sebewaing, David (Sheila) Fuerst, of Sebewaing; 
grandchildren, Lisa Fuerst, Leslie (Jason) Matlock, Calvin Fuerst, Todd (Dana) Fuerst; 
great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Lauren and a third great grandchild is due in April; step-
grandchildren, Steven Lenz, Sherri (Mike) Thorp, Karen Lenz; step-great-grandchildren, 
Kelsey and Hunter; brother, Ed (Lucille) Fuerst, of Sebewaing; sisters, Lillian Rothfuss, 
of Sebewaing, Vi Guillett, of Sebewaing, Hannah (Donald) Armbruster, of Allen, Luella 
(Robert) Colvin, of Washington; sisters-in-law, Donna Fuerst, of Bay Port, Johanna 
Fuerst, of St. Helen; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Rocal VanHoost and her 
family.   Wilbert was preceded in death by his brothers, Milton, Elmer and Art Fuerst; 
and a sister, Martha Meininger.   A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on 
Tuesday, September 12, 2006, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing, with the Rev. 
Daniel Hahn officiating. Interment will take place in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. 
Pallbearers for Mr. Fuerst are Calvin Fuerst, Todd Fuerst, Ken Fuerst, Dave Fuerst, Larry 
VanHoost, and Gary Schultz.   Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Dinkel-
Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the church.

Lucille Patrick 

Lucille Patrick, 97, of Hume Township died Saturday, September 9, 2006, at Sunny 
Acres Nursing Center in Bad Axe.   She was born August 16, 1909 in Fowlerville, 
daughter of the late Fred and Luella (Isham) Disbrow. Lucille married Clarence Henry 
Patrick on October 4, 1930.   He preceded her in death on March 22, 1978.   Lucille was a 
charter member of the Alpha Baptist Church in Livonia where she lived for 60 years until 
moving to Port Austin in 1993.   She is survived by her daughter, Beverly (Glenn) Rice, 
of Hume Township; 16 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; ten great great 
grandchildren; and her sister, Gertrude Soules, of Williamston.   She was preceded in 
death by two daughters; one son; two grandchildren; four sisters; and one brother.   A 
funeral service will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at the Knoblock 
Funeral Home in Kinde.   Visitation will be conducted from noon until the time of the 
service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in North 
Stockbridge Cemetery in Stockbridge. 


Leo J. Smith 

Leo J. Smith, 66, died Saturday, September 9, 2006.   Beloved husband of Lynda; dear 
father of Stacey (Mark) Kochanski and Leo H. (Donna); loving grandfather of Ashly, 
Trina, Brent, Noah, Clare and Elinor; also survived by siblings, Marie (Ray) Weingartz, 
Jean (Jerry) Messing, Jane (Bob) Peruski, Ruth Ann (Eugene) Duda, Christine (Mike) 
Higgins, Doris (Roger) Rindge, Lawrence (Barbara), Edward; and sister-in-law, Terrie.   
Leo was preceded in death by a brother, Donald, and a sister-in-law, Sharon.   A funeral 
Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at St. Rene Goupil 
Catholic Church, 35955 Ryan Road, Sterling Heights.   Visitation will be from 2 to 8 
p.m. today and from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the William Sullivan and Son Funeral 
Home, 8459 Hall Road (three blocks east of Van Dyke) Utica. Mr. Smith will lie in state 
from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the church. There will be a 
Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.   Memorials are 
suggested to the American Heart Association or Right to Life of Michigan.

Lizzette "Maggie" M. Franzel 

Mrs. Lizzette "Maggie" M. Franzel, 75, of Warren and formerly of Ubly, passed away 
Saturday, September 9, 2006, at Henry Ford Bi-County Hospital in Warren.   She was 
born September 5, 1931 in Ubly to the late Benjamin and Alice (Ross) Grenier.   Maggie 
was a graduate of St. Stephen's High School of Port Huron. She worked at Mueller Brass 
in Port Huron for 10 years. She was a lunchroom aide at the Thompson Elementary 
School in Warren. She was a parishioner at Ascension Parish in Warren for many years. 
She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, bingo, watching special TV programs and 
visiting with family and friends.   Maggie is survived by two sons, Thomas and Steven 
Franzel, both of Warren; one daughter, Karen LaFave and her husband, Kevin, of 
Scandia; special friend, Jodie Gray and her husband, Mark, of Ada; four grandchildren, 
Rachel and Zachary LaFave, Martin and Elizabeth Franzel; one sister, Emma Stepka, of 
Ubly; one brother, Robert Grenier, of Tampa, Florida.   She was preceded in death by an 
infant brother and an infant sister, Lillian. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on 
Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church of Freiburg. The Rev. 
Joseph Griffin, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.   Visitation 
will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly and from 10 to 
11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Ignatius Church. 


Robert W. Howard 

Robert W. Howard, 80, of Caseville, died Sunday, September 10, 2006, at Scheurer 
Hospital in Pigeon of complications from Parkinson's Disease.   Bob was born April 15, 
1926 in Standish to the late Bert and Edith (Maynard) Howard. He grew up and worked 
on the family farm on Howard Road, east of Caseville. As a young farmer, he would 
drive a team of horses before the family had a tractor to work the fields.   He married 
Emma Guza of Bad Axe on October 24, 1953 in Caseville. He worked many years 
farming and he retired from Bushey Brothers Tiling. He was a member of the Caseville 
United Methodist Church and a former member of the Caseville Eagles. He enjoyed 
square dancing and spending his winters in Port Charlotte, Florida.   Bob is survived by 
his wife, Emma; children, Georgia (Joe) Auer, of Caseville, Gregory, of Seattle, Michael 
of Fullerton, California, and Mary (Stefan Cieply) of Charlottesville, Virginia.; 
grandchildren, Sara, Becky and J.J.; and 10 brothers and sisters: Bertha (Steven) 
Gillingham, of California, Clayton (Joan), of Clio, Jean Hunt, of Bad Axe, Richard 
(Hallie), of Clio, Charles (Gretchen), of Frankenmuth, Dale, of Bad Axe, Joyce 
Sommerfeld, of Kalamazoo, Gary (Maxine), of Goodrich, Sharon (Ala) Kumaus, of 
Freeland, and Janice (Robert) Martinez, of California. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. 
on Saturday, September 16, 2006, at the Caseville United Methodist Church with the 
Rev. Philip Voss officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Bad Axe.   
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel of

Janet M. Kretzschmer 

Janet Marlene Kretzschmer, 67, of Pigeon, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2006, at 
Covenant Healthcare-Cooper.   She was born in Pigeon on May 18, 1939, daughter of the 
late Wesley and Pearl (Geiger) Kretzschmer.  She graduated in 1958 from Pigeon High 
School. She was a homemaker throughout her lifetime enjoying crocheting and knitting. 
She enjoyed traveling, especially to Florida, and liked to play solitaire and work word 
puzzle books. She was a member of the Caseville Retirement Club and the Caseville 
United Methodist Church.   She is survived by her sisters, Ruth Damm, of Bay Port, and 
Carol (Raymond) Ruszala, of Midland; brothers, Harold Kretzschmer, of Pigeon, Dale 
(Lorraine) Kretzschmer, of Caseville, and Leon (Donna) Kretzschmer,. of Caseville; in-
laws, Eldon Dietzel, of Owendale, and Gloria Kretzschmer, of Caseville; many nieces 
and nephews.   She was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Dietzel; a brother, LeRoy 
Kretzschmer; two brothers-in-law, Frederick "Fritz" Damm and Loren Kuebler; and two 
sisters-in-law, Joyce Kretzschmer and Jean Kretzschmer.   A funeral service will be 
conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 14, 2006, at the Caseville United 
Methodist Church with the Rev. Philip Voss, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Grand 
Lawn Cemetery.   Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at 
Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the 
service on Thursday at the church.   Memorials may be made to Caseville United 
Methodist Church, the American Diabetes Association, or Scheurer Hospital. 


Gordon LaVern McGeachy 

Gordon LaVern McGeachy, 88, of Grindstone City, passed away Monday, September 11, 
2006, at his home.   He was born August 12, 1918, to the late Duncan and Pearl 
(Bertram) McGeachy. He was united in marriage to Leona Finkel, in Port Austin, in 
1941. She preceded him in death in April 2004.   Mr. McGeachy was a resident of 
Grindstone City, church member at St. John's Lutheran Church in Port Hope and a 
member of the Port Austin Conservation Club. He served in the U.S. Army during World 
War II in Italy and North Africa. He was employed as a thread grinder at Salvo Tool for 
20 years and was a self employed carpenter for many years. He loved visiting with his 
friends and family, being outdoors, telling stories, raising dogs and hunting.   He is 
survived by one son, Lyle (Mary) McGeachy, of Romeo; three daughters, Judith 
(Symeon) Christakis, of Waterford, Jackie McGeachy, of Edmonds, Washington, and 
Margie (David) Dargo, of Belleville; one sister, Lila (Tom) Contreras, of Livonia; seven 
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.   He was 
preceded in death by two brothers, Irvin and Alvin McGeachy; one sister, Reta Lapworth.   
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at St. 
John Lutheran Church in Port Hope with Gregory Eilers officiating. Burial will be in 
New River Cemetery.   Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the MacAlpine

Joseph "Joe" F. Niemiec Jr. 

Joseph "Joe" F. Niemiec Jr., 63, of Ubly, passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2006, at 
his residence with his family at his side under hospice care.   He was born March 9, 1943 
in Detroit to the late Joseph F. and Angeline (Peplinski) Niemiec, Sr. He married Diane 
Krumenaker on April 26, 2006 in Bad Axe.   Joe was a 1962 graduate of Ubly High 
School. He was a member of the Grindstone-Port Hope Sportmen's Club for many years. 
He was a union member of the Operating Engineers Local 324. He was a past member of 
the Loyal Order of Moose Bad Axe Lodge 2358. He liked playing cards, pool, and darts. 
He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.   Joe is survived 
by his wife, Diane, of Ubly; two daughters, Laurie Glaza and her husband, Ken, of Ubly, 
Yvonne Paolucci and her husband, David, of Bad Axe; three sons, Brian Niemiec and his 
wife, Lori, of Palm Coast, Florida, Steven Niemiec and his wife, Kristi, of Bad Axe, Jeff 
Niemiec and his wife, Amanda, of Ubly; three stepchildren, James Schulte and his wife, 
Tonia, of Pound, Wisconsin, Donald Schulte, of Oconto, Wisconsin, Theresa Kingsley 
and her husband, Joe, of Oconto, Wisconsin; 17 grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn 
Niemiec and Mary Guigar and her husband, Eugene, both of Ubly; one brother, Tom 
Niemiec and his special friend, Pat Gann, of Hazel Park.   He was preceded in death by 
one son, Joseph "Joey" Niemiec III; and one infant daughter.   A funeral service will be 
at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 15, 2006, at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home. The 
Rev. Joseph Griffin, pastor of St. John's Catholic Church in Ubly, will officiate. Burial 
will be in the church cemetery.   Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. on Thursday and from 
9:30 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Albert Kenneth Colberg 

Albert Kenneth Colberg, 85, of Pigeon, passed away Friday, September 1, 2006, at Sunny 
Acres Nursing Center near Bad Axe.   He was born April 28, 1921 in Danville, Illinois, 
son of the late Louis and Bertha (Lappin) Colberg. On December 24, 1964 he was united 
in marriage to Viola Wojcinski in Mount Clemens. She preceded him in death on 
February 23, 2006.   Mr. Colberg served in the military. He worked for Consumers Power 
Company until his retirement.   He is survived by his stepchildren, Mary Ann (Norman) 
Gladych, of Caseville, Veronica Davenport, of Panama City, Florida, Betty Ann Garlick, 
of Beaverton, Mildred German, of Kentucky, and George Jacob, of Edgewater, Florida; 
and many stepgrandchildren.   He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Patricia 
Jayes; and a stepgranddaughter, Brenda Gladych.    Cremation has taken place. A private 
committal service will take place at Grand Lawn Cemetery.  Meyersieck-Bussema 
Funeral Home, Pigeon, conducted the arrangements. 


Hunter David Guza 

We grieve for the unborn, who haven't seen the light of day, who haven't graced the 
world with their loving face, their joyful smile or soft embrace.   With his life so short, 
we hadn't the chance to see his eyes or hear his cry, but for a little while on September 
13, 2006, we held him close and loved him more than anything else.   Hunter David 
Guza, son of Gregory and Christine (Hughes) Guza, is gone but never will be forgotten;   
a little brother to Anne, Becky, Clairessa, Desirae, Elijah, Fabian and Gregory Jr.; a 
beloved grandson of Meinard and Georgeana Guza and Patrick and Dolores Hughes.   He 
now is living with God and his great grandparents in the skies, Edmund and Elizabeth 
Guza, Edward and Edna Paionk, Aloysius and Marion Hughes and Elmer and Viola 
McFarland.   A Mass of the Angels will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2006, at 
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe.   Visitation will be from 12:30 until the Mass 
time at 1 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are by Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of 
Ubly. 


Tyler David Schumacher 

Tyler David Schumacher, son of Todd and Kristin Schumacher, and baby brother of 
Brittany, Hali, Madeline and Lindsay, was delivered to Heaven on September 2, 2006. He 
will be sadly missed by his family, grandparents, Ken and Lisa Brock, Joyce and Roger 
Kendrick, and David and Karen Schumacher; great grandparents, Jim and Linda Patton 
and Rose Schumacher; aunts and uncles, Lindsay Brock, Christopher and Janelle 
Schumacher, Stormie and Mark Bruce, Barry Schumacher, Mistie Schumacher, and Mike 
Snyder; cousins, Trent and Taylor Schumacher, Eric, Dominic, Sommer and Ian Bruce, 
Chase, Natalie, Addie, Chandler and Wyatt Schumacher, and Sparcle Schumacher; many 
great aunts and uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by great grandparents, Joan 
Knecht William and Marlene Swindell, Ernest and Ilene Woycik and James Schumacher; 
uncle, Alfonso Finatary; and cousins, Rebecca Schumacher, Patric and Albert Vogel and 
Joseph Schumacher.

Michael D. Kropewnicki 

Michael D. Kropewnicki, 48, of Cass City, died Wednesday, September 13, 2006, in 
Hills & Dales General Hospital after a long battle with cancer.   He was born December 
19, 1957 in Greenville to Robert Eugene and Agnes Bridget (Skinner) Kropewnicki.   He 
married Catherine Adams on July 14, 1979 in Greenville.   Mike received his masters in 
business administration from Central Michigan University. He worked for Meijer, Inc. 
for ten years, Jordan and Baker Colleges for nine years and was self employed with his 
landscaping business for five years. Mike currently worked for Gemini Group in Bad Axe 
where he has worked for the last ten years. He was an avid runner and member of the Bay 
Area Runners Club. He had received many trophies and medals. Mike served on the 
village of Cass City Zoning Board of Appeals as Chairperson for ten years. He was a 
member of the Cass City Chamber of Commerce and the Cass City/Gagetown Knights of 
Columbus No. 8892. Mike loved scuba diving and off-roading with his jeep. He enjoyed 
camping and traveling and loved his new Harley Davidson motorcycle.   Mike is survived 
by his wife, Cathy; daughter, Michelle (Arnold Buckley) Kropewnicki, of Davie, Florida; 
parents, Robert and Bridget Kropewnicki, of Greenville; brothers and sisters, Robert E. 
(Sheryl) Kropewnicki Jr., of Grand Rapids, Susan Lee (Kendall) Martin, of Grand 
Rapids, Teresa (Scott) Chapman, of Grand Haven, Patrick Kropewnicki, of Covington, 
Kentucky, Pamela (Casey) Lake, of Greenville; many nieces and nephews; many aunts, 
uncles and cousins in Ontario and Newfoundland; mother-in-law, Natalie (Richard) 
Kilfoil, of Greenville, sister-in-law, Ann (James) Stump, of Portland; brothers-in-law, 
John (Cindy) Adams, of New Era, and Daniel (Lee) Adams, of Frankenmuth.   He was 
preceded in death by his father-in-law, Emerson Adams; grandparents, including 
grandfather Julian Kropewnicki; great aunt, Barbara Bush; uncle, Richard (Phyllis) 
Kropewnicki.   A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, 
2006, in St. Michael Catholic Church with Sr. Riccardina Sylvestri officiating. Interment 
will take place in St. Charles Catholic Cemetery, Greenville.   Visitation will be from 2 to 
5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City, and from 9 to 10 a.m. on 
Saturday at the church.   Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or Lance

Edwin Allen Schmalz 

Edwin "Allen" Schmalz, 96, of Harbor Beach, passed away Wednesday, September 13, 
2006, in the Harbor Beach Community Hospital long term care unit.   He was born 
January 26, 1910 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Paul A. and Laura (Meyer) Schmalz.   On 
April 20, 1931, Allen and Mary Elizabeth Ganley were united in marriage. She preceded 
him in death on November 11, 1989.   Allen was a second generation owner of Schmalz 
Plumbing and Heating in Harbor Beach, acquiring the business from his father, P.A. 
Schmalz, in 1970. His father started the business in 1910 as a sheet metal shop. He was a 
member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Beach and a life member of the 
Verona-Huron Lodge 365 Masonic Lodge of which he served as Worthy Master. Allen 
was a former member of the Harbor Beach Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, and 
Lions Club. He also served on the Harbor Beach City Council and was instrumental in 
the Industrial Park development in Harbor Beach.   Surviving are his children, Lexie Ann 
Wade and her husband, Donald, of Marysville, Richard A. Schmalz and his wife, Joyce, 
of Harbor Beach, Carol Wojnar and her husband, John, of Howell, Thomas L. Schmalz 
and his wife, Judy, of Harbor Beach, and Fred Schmalz and his fiancée, Kim, of 
Roseville. He was the proud grandfather of 25 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 
nine great great grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Also 
surviving are two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Dickinson, of Harbor Beach, and Virginia 
Schmalz, of Vero Beach, Florida; and nephew, Mark Schmalz, of Gainesville, Florida.   
Preceding him in death were a brother, Chester E. Schmalz; and a great granddaughter, 
Stephanie Wade.   He will be dearly missed by all his children and grandchildren. He had 
such a positive and wonderful outlook on life and passed on many life lessons to his 
grandchildren. He always enjoyed a good joke, cherished family reunions and loved 
playing cribbage and doing crossword puzzles.   Funeral services will be conducted at 11 
a.m. on Monday, September 18, 2006, in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, with 
the Rev. Theresa Cutler, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Cremation 
will follow at Sunset Valley Crematory, Bay City, with interment in the New River 
Cemetery, Huron City, at a later date.   Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Sunday and 
from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday.   A Masonic Memorial service will 
be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home.   Memorials may be made to 
the Harbor Beach Community Hospital Long Term Care, Eastern Huron Ambulance 
Service or the family discretionary fund. 


Anna Viscogliosi 

Anna (Marcuccilli) Viscogliosi, 66, of Vernon, Connecticut, beloved wife of the late 
Giovanni Viscogliosi, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at the 
New York Presbyterian Hospital.   Anna was born April 20, 1940 in Detroit, daughter of 
the late Gaetano and Marianna Marcuccilli of Santo Padre, Italy.   Anna was an 
amazingly caring, loving mother and grandmother. She lived her life filled with laughter, 
dignity and grace. She had a very quick wit and always a good story to tell. She was 
everyone's counselor, imparting timeless wisdom while striving for peace and good 
humor. Blessed with God's grace, her ability to relate to people on their terms was 
extraordinary. Her greatest joys in life were her husband, children and grandchildren. The 
virtues she taught her loved ones were those of family unity, unconditional love, 
optimism, peacefulness, inner strength and faith. Anna's love, wisdom, and compassion 
bestowed upon her a graciousness which was rare and beautiful.   She was a member of 
the Manchester Historical Society, the Italian American Club, of Livonia, a communicant 
of Sacred Heart Parish of Vernon, Connecticut. Anna owned and operated Ann's Pub in 
Wayne for 18 years with her late husband, Giovanni.   Anna is survived by her daughter, 
Lori Calabrese and her husband, Andrea, of Vernon, Connecticut; three sons, Tony 
Viscogliosi and his fiancée, Paula Lajaunie, and her daughters, Sophia and Aurianna, J.J. 
Viscogliosi and his fiancée, Deborah Bocchicchio, Marc Viscogliosi and his wife, Paola 
Andrea, all of New York. Her love surrounds forever her grandchildren, Angelica, 
Arianna, Giovanni and Francesco Calabrese and Isabella Viscogliosi. She is also survived 
by her brother Tony Marcelli and his wife, Cynthia, and their children, Jennifer and 
Marc; a nephew, Elio Viscogliosi, as well as many nieces and nephews in Italy. A funeral 
procession will gather by 10 a.m. on Monday, September 18, 2006, at the Small & Pietras 
Funeral Home, 65 Elm Street, Vernon-Rockville, Connecticut to Sacred Heart Church, 
550 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon, Connecticut, for a Mass of Christian Burial to be 
conducted at 11 a.m. Anna will be entombed beside her late husband in Mount Saint 
Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield, Connecticut.   Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. and 
6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday. The family will also receive relatives and friends from 1 to 5 
p.m. on Sunday at the Small & Pietras Funeral Home, 65 Elm Street, Vernon-Rockville,
