Local Obituaries Week of November 14, 1999

Frances Bohl
Frances Annastasia Bohl, 82, of Genesee Township and former resident of Bad Axe, died 
Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Willowbrook Manor in Flint after a long illness.  She was 
born on April 2, 1917, in Rapson, the daughter of the late Ignatz and Annastasia 
(Kubacki) Pawlosky.  Frances Pawlosky and Harold Hahn were married in 1939. He died 
in 1958. She married Richard Bohl in 1972. He preceded her in death in 1980.  She is 
survived by one sister, Mrs. Marie Edward of Flushing, two sisters-in-law, Blanche 
Pawlosky of Bad Axe and Elsie Pawlosky of Marine City; many nieces and nephews.  
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Pawlosky and Edwards Pawlosky, 
and one sister, Irene Marsh.  Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, 
at the H.W. Weitenberner Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. Jack Leipert, pastor of 
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. 

Vincent Champagne
Vincent A. Champagne, 60, of Romeo and formerly of Pinnebog, died Thursday, Nov. 
18, 1999, at William Beaumont Hospital in Troy.  He was born on Aug. 20, 1939, in 
Huron County, the only son of Violet (Zimmer) Champagne and the late Hebert 
Champagne.  On April 20, 1963, he was united in marriage to Donna Killwald in 
Roseville.  Surviving are his wife, Donna; children, Jennifer Gilmore and her husband, 
Don, of Leonard, Matthew Champagne and his wife, Dana, of Clifton Park, N.Y., Mark 
Champagne and his wife, Sheila, of Troy and Sara Nadrowski and her husband, Kevin, of 
Oxford; his mother, Violet Champagne, of West Branch; five sisters, Barbara Carpenter 
and her husband, Edward, of Clinton Township, Theresa Champagne, Lois Bunting and 
her husband, Ron and Dorothy Goodsell and her husband, Tom, all of West Branch and 
Betty Garza and her husband, Rubin, of Burt.  A funeral mass will be conducted at 10 
a.m. on Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at Assumption Grotto Catholic Church in Detroit with 
burial in the church cemetery. 

Leone MacAlpine
Leone Dufty MacAlpine, 86, of Asheville, N.C., died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at 
Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center.  A native of Caseville, she has resided in 
Buncombe county since January 1949 and was a daughter of the late Thomas and Edith 
"Ada" McElmurray Dufty.  Surviving are her husband, Orville Duncan MacAlpine, 
M.D.; sons, James Edward MacAlpine, and Robert Thomas MacAlpine and his wife, 
Gail, all of Asheville; grandchildren, Jill and Trent MacAlpine of Asheville; sisters, Viva 
Eidt of San Marino, Calif., Gerry Dirkes of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Margie D. Hecht of 
Asheville.  Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at 
Foster Memorial S.D.A. Church with the Rev. Greg Taylor, pastor, and W.G. Ambler, 
elder, officiating. Entombment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. 

Doris Rotermund
Doris A. Rotermund, 85, of Cass City died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Tendercare 
Nursing Facility in Cass City.  Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, 
Nov. 20, 1999, in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gerald Meyer 
officiating. Interment is in Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria, Ill. 


Marguerite Janes 
Marguerite Leone Janes, 87, of Lake Township died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at her 
home.  She was born Sept. 22, 1912, in a house in Caseville that is currently the Boat 
House Restaurant. She moved to the Detroit area as a young girl with her parents, the late 
Henry and Edith (Taylor) Pethers.  She married J. Tony Janes on March 3, 1967. They 
both retired from Ford Motor Co., that year and moved back to the Caseville area settling 
near Oak Beach. Tony died Jan. 8, 1988.  Surviving are her daughter, Caryle Syme and 
her husband, Jay, of Farmington Hills; three granddaughters, Tracy Syme of Farmington 
Hills, Kristen Malysz and her husband, Curtis, of Walled Lake and Caye Matthews and 
her husband, Michael, of West Bloomfield; two great-grandchildren, Quinten and 
Catrina; her sister, Irene Eddy and her husband, Irvin, of Oak Beach.  Funeral services 
will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at the Champagne Funeral 
Chapel in Caseville with burial in the Caseville Township Cemetery. 

Owen Church 
Owen W. Church, 87, of Bad Axe and Filion died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at his 
home. He was the son of the late Art and Laura (DesJardin) Church.  He married Frances 
Shain on Nov. 28, 1938. She preceded him in death on Dec. 31, 1986.  He is survived by 
two daughters, Carolyn Nelson and her husband, Ken, of Naples, Fla. and Gladys Leupen 
and her husband, Tom, of Tyler, Texas; one sister, Marie Summers of Seminole, Fla.; 
seven grandchildren, Laura Wallace of Wisconsin, David and Jim Nelson of Naples, Fla., 
Deborah Wood of North Carolina, Derek, Leslie and Teresa Leupen of Texas; 10 great-
grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. 
on Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Pastor Gordon 
Gossman of the Bad Axe Church of the Nazarene will officiate. Burial will take place in 
Colfax Cemetery. 

James Detrick 
James W. Detrick, 65, of Port Hope passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 
1999.   He was born on June 22, 1934, in Detroit, the son of the late Homer and Myrtle 
(Emerick) Detrick. He married Sally Hamilton on June 24, 1954, in Detroit.  He is 
survived by his wife, Sally of Port Hope; two sons, David Detrick and his wife, Jean, of 
Grindstone City and Daniel Detrick and friend, Karla Devereaux, of Grand Rapids; two 
brothers, Lloyd Pawlitz and his wife, Mildred, of Port Hope and Arnold Pawlitz and his 
wife, Mary, of Sand Point; one sister, Evelyn Hoeldtke of Hudson, Fla.; one sister-in-law, 
Betty Schmitz of Warren; three grandchildren, Ryan and Nicole Detrick of Grindstone 
City and Danielle Detrick of South Port, Fla.  He was preceded in death by one son, Mark 
Detrick.  Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at the 
Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. Clarence VanConant, pastor of the Harbor 
Beach United Methodist Church and Port Hope United Methodist Church, will officiate, 
as well as Dr. Gary Pawlitz. Interment will be in Christian Memorial Cultural Center in 
Rochester Hills. 

Louise Daenzer 
Louise I. Daenzer, 87, of Port Hope passed away on Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, in 
Tendercare Nursing Center in Cass City following a short illness.  She was born on Aug. 
6, 1912, in Flint to the late Frank and Margaret (Wendt) Martens.  She and Eric Daenzer 
were married on Oct. 27, 1955, in Bay City. He preceded her in death on June 24, 1965.  
She is survived by several cousins. She was preceded in death by four children.  Funeral 
services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Zion Lutheran Church with the 
Rev. Mark Giradin, pastor, and the Rev. Eugene Koessel, former pastor, officiating. 
Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Bay City. 

Ervin Parker 
Ervin James Parker, 72, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at his home in Grass Lake 
under the loving care of his family and Great Lakes Hospice.   He was born Sept. 7, 1927, 
in Elkton.  He is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, George Parker of Jackson and 
Timothy Parker and his wife, Janet, of Grass Lake; a daughter, Laura Parks and her 
husband, Eric, of Grass Lake; brothers, Mervin Parker and his wife, JoAnne, of Portland, 
Donald Parker and his wife, Gerry, of McKinley and William Parker of Owendale; 11 
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his daughter, 
Elise; parents, George and Electa; his sister, Helen Cone; and brother Leo Parker. 

Ernest Young 
Ernest Paul Young, 79, of Port Hope near Lighthouse Park, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 
16, 1999, in Covenant-Cooper Hospital in Saginaw following a short illness.  He was 
born March 23, 1920, in Detroit to the late Ernest and Nellie (Crain) Young.  He and 
Betty Carruthers were married on Dec. 31, 1941, in Detroit. He was a retired employee of 
the Chrysler Corp. retiring in 1972, after 30 years working in the Mack Stamping Plant in 
Detroit.  He is survived by his wife, Betty Young of Port Hope; three daughters, Carol 
Jiles and her husband, Edward, of Pearl Beach, Sandra Hilkert of Warren and Nancy 
Smith of Warren; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.  He was preceded 
in death by one brother and three sisters.  Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 
19, 1999, at the Ramsey Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, in Harbor Beach 
with the Rev. Andrew Willis, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will 
be in the New River Cemetery in Huron City. 


Hiram Keyser 
Hiram Keyser, 81, of Ubly died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, in Hills and Dales General 
Hospital.  Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, in Kranz 
Funeral Home with the Rev. David Edwards of Cass City Missionary Church officiating. 
Interment is in Elkland Township Cemetery. 

William Johnson 
William Roy Johnson Jr., known as J.R., 18, of Bad Axe died suddenly at his home on 
Monday, Nov. 15, 1999.  He was born Feb. 18, 1981, in Bad Axe. He was the son of 
Mary Lou (Cummings) Jackson and the late William Roy Johnson Sr.  Surviving are his 
son, Kendrick Johnson of Bad Axe; his mother, Mary Lou Jackson and stepfather, 
Michael Jackson, of Bad Axe; two sisters, Tina Waymaster and her husband, Jason, of 
Bad Axe and Stacy Hiller and her husband, Ron, of Harbor Beach; one stepsister, Dede 
Pawloski and her husband, Chris, of Cass City; one stepbrother, Michael Jackson and his 
wife, Casey, of Cass City; his grandmother, Dorothy Desburough of St. Ives, England; 
grandfather, Robert Johnson of Caro; and step-grandfather, Walt Fritz of Owendale; 
several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.  He was preceded in death by his brother, 
Johnathon Johnson; father Willie Johnson; and grandmother, Dorothy Fritz.  Funeral 
services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at the MacAlpine 
Funeral Home in Bad Axe with the Rev. William Wright, pastor of the United Methodist 
Church in Bad Axe, officiating. Burial will follow in Grant Township Cemetery. 

Jacquelin Massie 
Jacquelin E. Massie, 58, of Sebewaing and formerly of Fort Worth, Texas, and Waterford 
died unexpectedly on Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at her home.  She was born on April 13, 
1941, in Salem, Ill., the daughter of Zeline (Goodwin) Austin and the late Bill Austin.  
Surviving are two daughters, Kimberly Kay Harriman and her husband, Raymond, of 
Spring Hill, Fla. and Sheryl Elaine Brooks and her husband, Warren, of Alta Loma, 
Calif.; one son, James Lynn Massie serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Vicksburg, and 
his wife, Nicolette; five grandchildren; her mother, Zeline Austin of Sebewaing; one 
great-aunt, Pauline Sweatt, of Fort Worth; numerous nieces and nephews living in 
Hardin, Ill.; and a special friend, Chuck Worthy, of Union Lake.  She was preceded in 
death by one sister, Tina Holloway, and one brother, Edward Austin.  The funeral service 
will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at the Fairhaven Mennonite 
Church in Bay Port. The Rev. Wayne Keim will officiate. 

Arthur Winiecke 
Arthur K. Winiecke, 73, former area resident died at his home in Kearny, Ariz., Nov. 8, 
1999 from asbestos-induced lung cancer which brought on a heart attack and stroke.  Art 
was born in Carrollton (Saginaw) to Anthony and Anna Winiecke on Jan. 1, 1926. His 
parents, along with eldest brother Anthony, preceded him in death.  Surviving are sons 
Steve (Billie) of Tampa, Fla. and children Jori, Andrew and Alyssa; son Christopher and 
his wife, Delia, of Mesa, Ariz., with children Thadeus and Celia; son Briant of Kearny, 
with daughters Brilene and Caitlan; son Alex of Tulsa, Okla., and girls Devin and Laurie; 
brothers, Ray of Oracle, Ariz., and Clarence, and his wife, Zeke, of Midland, also 
surviving is his faithful companion of 15 years, Willie, who never left his side during his 
illness and now grieves.  Services were at Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in 
Kearny, with Rev. Bill Taft officiating. Rosary was at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999 
and mass took place on Friday, Nov. 12. 

Edward Hass 
Edward William Hass, 85, of Bad Axe, and formerly of Filion, died unexpectedly at his 
home on Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999.  He was born on Sept. 30, 1914, in Port Austin, the son 
of the late Otto and Augusta (Iseler) Hass.  Mr. Edward Hass and Miss Irene Lawitzke 
were married on Nov. 9, 1940, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Port Hope.  Surviving are 
two daughters, Ruth Rothe and her husband, Edward, of Rogers City, and Rachel Klaus 
and her husband, Glenn, of Minden City; one son, Kenneth Hass and his wife, Esther, of 
Richmond; eight grandchildren; one brother, Herbert Hass, of Port Austin; one sister, 
Esther Shubel of Ubly.  He was preceded in death by death by two sisters, Gertrude Koth 
and Emma Hass.  Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 
1999, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe with the Rev. Kenneth D. Lueke, 
pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Colfax Township Cemetery in Bad Axe. 

Geneva Higgs 
Geneva A. Higgs, 76, formerly of Caro, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at 
Tendercare Nursing Home in Cass City.  She was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Caseville.  The 
former Geneva Champagne married Norman "Dick" Higgs May 10, 1941, in Laredo, 
Texas. He preceded her in death on July 22, 1988.  She is survived by a son, Fred Higgs 
and his wife, Carolyn, of Canton; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two 
brothers, Kenneth Champagne and his wife, Norma, of Pennsylvania, and Elmer 
Champagne of Caro; one sister-in-law, Connie Champagne of Deford; and several nieces 
and nephews.  She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edmund, Clete and Linus; 
and one sister, Mary Pinkoski.  Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, 
Nov. 17, 1999, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Kenneth Yaroch 
officiating. Burial will take place in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in Wilmont. 

Stan Servay 
Stanford "Stan" Servay, 59, of Port Austin died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at his home.  
He was born Feb. 22, 1940, in Detroit, son of the late Alec and Mary (Nazak) Servay.  He 
and Leona Jaworski were married May 26, 1962, at Assumption Grotto Church in 
Detroit.  He is survived by his wife, Leona; two sons, Jeffrey Servay and his wife, 
Michelle, of Sterling Heights, and Scott Servay and his wife, Stacy, of Warren; and four 
grandchildren, Jessica, Alexander, Kayla, and Brendan. He is also survived by one 
brother and four sisters.  A Mass of the Resurrection will take place at 11 a.m., Tuesday, 
Nov. 16, 1999, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin with the Rev. Michael J. 
Bell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. 

Percy Nugent 
Percy J. Nugent, 85, of Bad Axe passed away early Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Regional 
Medical Center Bayonet Pointe, Hudson, Fla., near his winter home in Port Richey.  He 
was born Feb. 19, 1914, in Bad Axe, the son of the late Howard and Alice (Porsche) 
Nugent.  Surviving are his wife, Yvonne; four sons, Donne Nugent and his wife, Carmen, 
of Granger, Ind., Paul Nugent and his wife, Krista, of Caseville, David Nugent and his 
wife, Barbara, of Grass Lake, and Charles Nugent and his wife, Sally, of Cincinnati; two 
daughters, Linda Rogers and her husband, Mike, of Niles, and Marie Nugent of Traverse 
City; 12 grandchildren, Michelle Rogers, Jacqueline and Nicholas Nugent, John and 
James Nugent, David and Daniel Nugent, Candis and Warren Parrish, and Timothy, Mark 
and Scott Parish; one brother, William Nugent and his wife, Annette, of Bad Axe; one 
sister, Loretta Fox of Livonia; a sister-in-law, Helen Rohlfs; a special friend, Walt 
Priemer of Bad Axe; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by three 
brothers, Leon, Ronald and Ralph Nugent and one sister, Ardis Yageman.  Mass of 
Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Sacred Heart Catholic 
Church in Bad Axe with the Rev. Fr. Jack Leipert, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow 
at Sacred Heart Cemetery. 

Sylvia Rock 
Sylvia Ione Rock, 79, of Deford died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, in Marlette Extended Care 
Facility in Marlette.  Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, 
1999, in Deford United Methodist Church in Deford with the Rev. Margaret Passenger 
officiating. Interment will be in Novesta Township Cemetery. 

Anna Lasceski 
Anna Lasceski, 88, of Filion, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999 at the Huron County Medical 
Care Facility in Bad Axe.  She was born on Dec. 22, 1910 in Kinde, daughter of the late 
Joseph and Mary (Polega) Schramski. She and John Lasceski were married Nov. 4, 1930 
in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kide. He preceded her in death on April 25, 1989.  She 
is survived by five children, Bernard Lasceski, and his wife, Florence, of Filion, Bernice 
Osentoski and her husband, Mark, of Kinde, Grace Goretski, and her husband, Ernest, of 
Port Austin, Jerry Lasceski, and his wife Suzanne, of Fairgrove, and John Lasceski of 
Farmington Hills; 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and one great-great 
grandchild; four brothers, Frank and Bernard Schramski, both of Port Austin, John 
Schramski and his wife, Helen, of Kinde, and Joseph Schramski of Centerline; four 
sisters, Regina Lasceski of Filion, Martha Semraw of Roseville, Genevieve Peruski and 
her husband, Eugene, of Minden City, Marie Osentoski and her husband, Leonard, of 
Ubly; several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by two brothers, Anthony 
and Felix Schramski, and one daughter-in-law, Barbara Lasceski.  Mass of the 
Resurrection will take place at 11 a.m. Monday Nov. 15, 1999 at St. Mary's Catholic 
Church in Kinde. Rev. Michael J. Bell will officiate. Burial will follow in the church 
cemetery. 

Audrey E. Ingram 
Audrey E. Ingram, 80, of Citra, Fla., formerly of Port Hope, passed away Wednesday, 
Nov. 10, 1999 at her home in Florida following a short illness.  She was born July 5, 
1919 in Port Hope, daughter of the late Edwin G. and Mary Grace (Ledsworth) 
Richardson.  She and Victory Ingram were married Oct. 21, 1929 in the Redman 
Presbyterian Church near Port Hope.  Surviving are her husband, Vic Ingram, of Citrus, 
Fla.; three daughters, Vicky Wrobel of Port Hope, Faye Lange, and her husband, Dean, of 
Midland, Marsha Kloska and her husband, Doug, of Lapeer; a son, Sam Ingram, and his 
wife, Jessica, of Port Hope; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ted 
Richardson, and his wife, Kay, of St. Clair; a sister, Phyllis Everly, and her husband, 
James, of Dunnellen, Fla.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Burton Richardson.  
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, 1999 at the Ramsey Funeral 
Home, Harbor Beach (A Golden Rule Funeral Home) with Rev. Dennis Cupery and Rev. 
Theresa Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Port Hope. 

Thomas Taylor Jr. 
Thomas L. Taylor Jr., 71, of Sebewaing and formerly of Port Austin, died Tuesday, Nov. 
9, 1999, at the Saginaw Veterans Hospital.  He was born on April 8, 1928, in Akron, 
Ohio, the son of the late Grace (York) and Thomas L. Taylor Sr. He married Lorraine 
Fluegge on July 21, 1962. She preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1999.  Surviving are two 
daughters, Sharon Bletl and her husband, Everitt, of Bad Axe and Gail Thompson of 
Sebewaing; 10 grandchildren, Everitt Jr., Ashley, Rebecca, Joshua and Derek Bletl and 
Brandi, Brittani, Bryon and Bret Thompson; and three sisters, Karen Gorman and her 
husband, Richard, of Howell, Beverly Marshall of Brighton and Patricia Leonard of Fort 
Lauderdale, Fla.  A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, 
1999, at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. The Rev. Robert P. Garrett will officiate. 
A graveside service will follow at the Port Austin Township Cemetery.
