Local Obituaries Week of December 12, 1999

Rita Kanaby
Rita M. Kanaby, 79, of Elsie and formerly of Port Hope, passed away on Thursday, Dec.
16, 1999, at Owosso Memorial Hospital following and extended illness. She was born on
March 5, 1920, in Harbor Beach to the late Lawrence and Viola (Hunter) Ruhl. She and
Daniel Kanaby were married on June 5, 1939, in South Bend, Ind. He preceded her in
death on Nov. 17, 1994. Rita is survived by a son, Lance Kanaby and his wife, Jimeen,
of Tonawanda, N.Y.; a daughter, Teri Lover and her husband, Ron, of Elsie; four
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Lawrence "Bud" Ruhl of Harbor
Beach; two sisters, Shirley Ruhl of Harbor Beach and Joan Johnston of Hazel Park. She
was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Kanaby Jr. and a sister, Lorna Gaffke. Mass of
Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at Our Lady of Lake Huron
Catholic Church in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Edward Konieczka, pastor officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. A vigil service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday
in the Ramsey Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, in Harbor Beach.

Richard Kosal
Richard (Dick) Kosal, 54, of Peck died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at his home. He was
born on May 22, 1945, in Palms, the son of the late Michael and Genevieve (Messing)
Kosal. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca; two sons, Charles Kosal and his wife,
Jennifer, of Fraser and Jeffrey Kosal of Port Huron; mother-in-law, Virginia Johnston of
Port Huron; four brothers, Raymond Kosal and his wife, Barbara, of Commerce
Township, James Kosal and his wife, Nancy, of Ionia, Robert Kosal and his wife, JoAnn,
of Minden City and Edward Kosal and his wife, Marsha, of Palms; three sisters, Rose
Shubitowski and her husband, Anthony, of Clinton Township, Mary Ellen Leppek and
her husband, Jerome, of Bay City and Gail Mroz and her husband, John, of Warren.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at the Sandusky
Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Mark Morningstar officiating. Burial was in the Elk
Township Cemetery in Peck. Pallbearers were John, Dennis and Ronald Shubitowski,
Michael, Kevin and Brian Kosal and Roger Leppek.

Freddie Nipper
Mr. Freddie Allen Nipper, 52, of Minden City died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at Port
Huron Hospital. He was born Sept. 8, 1947, in Athens, Tenn. He was the son of the late
Arthur and Athelene (Bailey) Nipper. He is survived by one daughter, Dawn Conley and
her husband, Wayne, of Ubly; one son, Gary Mater of Sandusky; one sister, Joan Keen of
Harrison Township; one brother, David Nipper and his wife, Mary, of Warren; two
grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 8:30 p.m. today, Dec. 17, 1999 at the
Smigielski Funeral Home in Minden City. The Rev. Max Gibbs officiating.

Elmer Born
Elmer Clarence Born, 61, of Pigeon passed away Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at Bay
Medical Center in Bay City. He was born on May 2, 1938, in St. Clair County, son of
Clarence F. and Luella M. (Pobanz) Born. He graduated from Elkton High School in
1956. On January 21, 1961, he married Myrna L. Schafer at Immanuel Lutheran Church
in Sebewaing. He is survived by his wife, Myrna; children, Laurie J. Pionk of Saginaw,
Vickie L. Buchholz and her husband, Scott, of Lake Orion, Krisie S. Fritz and her
husband, Mark, of Pigeon, Rick E. Born and his wife, Kriste, of Auburn, and Hollie R.
Haag and her husband, Brian, of Inkster; 10 grandchildren, Shannon, Kylee, Kasey,
Kayla, Miranda, Adam, Joshua, Allysa, Jonathan and Jesse; his parents, Clarence and
Luella Born; a sister, Elaine Lokinski of Fairgrove; and several nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Richard Pionk. Funeral services will be
conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Linkville
with the Rev. Ernest C. Wendt, vacancy pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church
cemetery.

John Dillon
John D. "Jack" Dillon, 66, of Harbor Beach passed away on Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at
his home following a long illness. He was born on Jan. 28, 1933, in Palms to Ella
(McLeod) Dillon and the late Edwin Dillon. He and Lorene Diem were married on Jan.
23, 1954, in Sandusky Reformed Latter Day Saints Church. He is survived by his wife,
Lorene Dillon, of Harbor Beach; three children, Terrence Dillon and his wife, Nancy, of
Saginaw, Denise Wruble and her husband, Gary, of Lodonderry, N.H. and Alan Dillon,
of Alma; six grandchildren, Nickolas, Andrea and Kathryn Dillon and Chad, Clarice and
Jaclyn Wruble; his mother, Ella Dillon, of Port Huron; a brother, Daniel Dillon, and his
wife, Barb; three sisters, Mary Frances Smith and her husband, Frank, of Carsonville,
Grace Klaty-Winegardner and her husband, Nelson, of Sandusky and Dora Russel and
her husband, Calvin, of Marysville. He was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret
Arnot; and four brothers, Robert, Thomas, James and Ronald. Funeral services will be at
1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach with
Elder Kenneth Diem and Elder Donald Richards officiating. Burial will be in the Rock
Falls Cemetery. A military graveside service will be conducted by the VFW Post.

Alyda Meirthew
Alyda C. Meirthew, 68, of Harbor Beach passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, in Port
Huron Hospital following a brief illness. She was born on April 3, 1931, in Detroit to the
late John and Alyda (Dyer) Gorzas. She and Carl Meirthew were married April 7, 1951,
in Detroit's St. Phillip Mary Church. She is survived by her husband, Carl Meirthew of
Harbor Beach; a son, Gerard Meirthew and his wife, Pamela, of Detroit; an adopted son,
Claude Meirthew of Indiana; foster daughter, Iliana Ysla of Miami, Fla.; four
grandchildren, Clarissa, Ryan, Kyle and Ezekiel; a brother, Thomas Granger of
Cheboygen; two sisters, Margaret Short and her husband, Gary, of Caseville, Mary Ann
Berg and her husband, Louis, of Gross Pointe Park. Mass of Christian burial will be at
9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, in Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in
Harbor Beach with the Rev. Edward Konieczka, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the
Mt. Hope Cemetery in Livonia.

Leonard Osentoski
Leonard Osentoski, 69, of Ubly died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at Marlette Community
Hospital after a long illness. He was born Sept. 26, 1930, in Tyre, the son of the late
Joseph and Mary Swartz Osentoski. He married Marie Schramski on Oct. 9, 1954, in St.
Mary Catholic Church in Kinde. He is survived by his wife, Marie Osentoski, of Ubly;
two daughters, Loretta Supudowski and her husband, Floyd, of Fairhaven, Nancy Ahearn
and her fiance, Bryce, of Ubly; two sons, Larry and David Osentoski, both of Ubly; eight
grandchildren, Dennis Osentoski and his wife, Virginia, of South Carolina, Marie and
Jimmy Ahearn of Ubly, Robert and Aaron Osentoski of Ubly and Melissa, Amanda and
David Osentoski of Ubly; one great-grandson, Derrick Osentoski of South Carolina; two
brothers, Curtis Osentoski and his wife, Frances, of Ubly and Mark Osentoski and his
wife, Bernice, of Kinde; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Kociba and her husband, Herman, of
Ubly, Ilene Narring and her husband, Ted, of Warren and Delores Stacer and her
husband, Jim, of Harbor Beach; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death
by one granddaughter, Sara Osentoski. Mass of Resurrection will take place on Saturday,
Dec. 18, 1999, at 11 a.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Freiburger with the Rev.
Anthony Wozniak, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. A parish
wake service will take place at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17 at the Zinger-Smigielski
Funeral Home in Ubly.

Earl Alton
Earl Clifford Alton, 77, of Kinde died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Tendercare Nursing
Home in Cass City. He was born Dec. 22, 1921, in Bad Axe. He was the son of the late
Thomas and Molly (Berry) Alton. He married Miss Alva Noble on March 5, 1949, in
Salem, Ark. She preceded him in death on March 20, 1998. Surviving are two daughters,
Mary Reinke and her husband, Earl, of Port Hope, and Diane Walsh and her husband,
Raymond, of Howell; four grandchildren, Patrick Reinke, Brent Reinke, Curtis Walsh
and Renae Walsh; one sister, Alma Perdue of Kinde; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at the MacAlpine
Funeral Home-Gage Chapel in Kinde with the Rev. Ronald Landenberg officiating.
Burial will follow at New River Cemetery.

Edward Walkiewicz
Edward James Walkiewicz Jr., 23, of Deford died suddenly on Monday, Dec. 13, 1999,
near his home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16,
1999, in Kranz Funeral Home in Kingston with Pastor Wilbur Ricketts of Watertown
Missionary Church in Sandusky officiating.

Edmund Peplinski
Mr. Edmund F. Peplinski, 86, of Ruth died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at his residence. He
was born on Jan. 14, 1913, in Parisville, the son of the late Joseph and Lucy
(Woyciechowski) Peplinski. He married Leona O'Parka on Feb. 11, 1939, at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Parisville. He is survived by his wife, Leona, of Ruth; one son, Virgil
Peplinski and his wife, Delphine, of Ruth; six daughters, Marie Bartarian and her
husband, Walter "Marvin," of Vanderbelt, Janet Idyle and her husband, Edward, of
Gaylord, Doris Stimpfel and her husband, Thomas, of Cass City, Shirley Brownson and
her special friend, Tom, of Otisville, Sharon Fisher and her husband, Barry, of Gaylord
and Karen Maurer and her husband, Leonard, of Lake Worth, Fla.; 21 grandchildren; 25
great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank Peplinski of Filion, Archie Peplinski and his
wife, Regina, of Ruth and Ernest Peplinski and his wife, Lorraine, of South Lyons; seven
sisters, Bertha Vincent of Rochester Hills, Mary Maraj of Scottsdale, Ariz. Emilie
Kopinski of Rochester Hills, Irene Zalewski of Novi, Selma Danielski and her husband,
Ray, of Ruth, Alma Osentoski and her husband, Ben, of Garden City and Elsie Peruski of
South Lyons. He was preceded in death by his brother, Elmer Peplinski; son-in-law,
Philip Brownson and grandson, Michael Smeader. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11
a.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, 1999, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. The Rev.
Charles Hammond, pastor, will officiate. A parish wake service will be conducted at 8
tonight and a rosary by the St. Mary's Men's Club at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Zinger-
Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Donald Little
Donald C. Little, 72, of Cass City died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Hills & Dales General
Hospital in Cass City. Grave side services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec.
16, 1999, at Novesta Township Cemetery in Cass City with Chuck Emmert of Novesta
Church of Christ officiating.

George Thompson
Mr. George Thompson, 83, of Minden City died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Autumnwood
of Deckerville. He was born Oct. 8, 1916, in Minden City, son of the late Floyd and
Mary (Mahon) Thompson. He never married. He is survived by one brother, Edwin
Thompson and his wife, Viola, of Minden City; two sisters, Isabel Kursinsky of
Sandusky and Marjorie Maurer and her husband, Gordon, of Ruth; and many nieces and
nephews. Funeral services will take place at 9 p.m. today Dec. 14, 1999 at the
Smiglielski Funeral Home, located on Cass Avenue in Minden City. The Rev. Ronald
Wagner, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth will officiate. Burial will
be in the Minden City Cemetery.

Robert VonOeyen
The Rev. Robert R. von Oeyen, 81, passed away to be with the Lord on Dec. 9, 1999, at
Presbyterian Village in Redford. He had been suffering through the latter stages of
cancer. He was born in Detroit on Oct. 13, 1918, and graduated from Eastern High
School. He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughter, Barbara of Grand Rapids; five sons,
Peter in Harbor Beach, Richard in Lee, N.H., Paul in Bloomfield Hills, David in Malibu,
Calif., and Robert Jr. in Seoul, Korea; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Kuyk of
Fenton and Mary Ensroth of Bloomfield Hills; one brother, Paul F. von Oeyen of
Southfield. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Village
on Dec. 18, 1999, and the funeral will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 29 at Harbor Beach Presbyterian
Church. Burial will be in Rock Falls Cemetery in Harbor Beach.

Romanus Page
Romanus Edward Page, 73, of Warren, formerly of Harbor Beach, died Wednesday, Oct.
27, 1999, at St. John's Oakland Hospital in Madison Heights. He was born Sept. 30,
1926, to the late David and Christina Booms Page. On Oct. 16, 1954, Mr. Romanus Page
and Phyllis Prill were united in marriage at St. Mary's Church in Kinde. Surviving are
his wife, Phyllis; two sons, Allen Page and his wife, Alma, of Warren and Gene Page of
Kencheloe; two daughters, Annette Acord of Warren and Marilyn Kelley and her
husband, Billy, of Warren; two granddaughters and five grandsons; four brothers,
Clarence and his wife, Johana, of Frederick, Joseph and his wife, Gladys, of Davison,
Leroy of Ruth, and George of Harbor Beach; five sisters, Florence Horetski of St. Clair
Shores, Rose Des Roisers of Madison Heights, Bertha Kramer of Frederick, Lillian
Swagert of Kinde, and Marion Mazure and her husband, Francis, of Kinde. He was
preceded in death by an infant son, Peter; three sisters, Rita Clor, Margaret Carson and
Marcella Page; one brother, Raymond Page.

Olin Yackle
Olin G. Yackle, 91, longtime Sebewaing area businessman, died Friday morning, Dec.
10, 1999, at Scenic Home Adult Care in Pigeon following a brief illness. He was born
Aug. 1, 1908, in Sebewaing, son of the late William and Lillian (Kuhn) Yackle. He was
united in marriage to Lila C. McCoy on Aug. 21, 1934, in LaGrange, Ind. Surviving are
his wife, Lila Yackle, of Sebewaing; two sisters, Ilene Miller and her husband, Gene, of
Syracuse, N.Y., Laura Stowell and her husband, Donald, of Warren; several nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Yackle. Cremation has
taken place at the Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. A memorial service will take
place at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in
Sebewaing. The Rev. Richard Kriesch will officiate with inurnment to take place at the
Memorial Park Cemetery in Sebewaing.
