THIBODAUX -- Alton "Checkerboard" Roundtree Sr., a former Thibodaux councilman
and mayor died Thursday at his home. He was 93.

Roundtree, a Navy veteran, one-time trapper and retired oil company, was first
elected to office in 1985 at age 71 when he became a Thibodaux city councilman.
Five years later, voters elected him mayor.

Roundtree, widely-known by the nickname he got in eighth grade because of the
patches applied to his basketball shorts to keep them from sliding off his lanky
body, was born Nov. 5, 1913, at Laurel Valley Plantation.

He dropped out of school after the eighth grade when his father got sick
Roundtree became a trapper in the swamps of Schriever and Chacahoula to help
make ends meet, family members said. He worked as a welder in sugar mills across
south Louisiana and on the USS Delatore dredge boat for the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers.

He served in the Navy during World War II and, upon his release in 1945, started
a career in the oil-and-gas industry which would span the rest of his life.

He was appointed constable for Lafourche Parish in the mid-1940s, his son Gwain
Roundtree said, and in 1948, when Thibodaux was declared a city, was appointed
its first marshal. Later, he would head the city's state-revenue office.

Roundtree served a single term as mayor beginning in 1990. During his tenure, he
paid special attention to the city's infrastructure and recreation programs, his
son said, and was instrumental in bringing the annual living Christmas tree
program to the Thibodaux Civic Center.

His love for the city, his son said, was only equaled by his love of family,
country, God and sports.

Roundtree was an athlete, avid hunter, fisherman and naturalist and sports coach
throughout his life, his family said. He was especially fond of bowling and,
over a 60-year bowling career, captured a state championship title and was
elected into the Thibodaux Bowling Association Hall of Fame.

He also helped organize the Krewe of Cleophas and was a member of the Krewe of
Chronos.

"He was a fun-loving guy," Gwain Roundtree said of his father. "He loved life.
He loved people. If he was talking to you, before he finished talking, he would
know everything about you. ... He would keep going until he found somebody he
knew
(in common) and y'all would not be strangers anymore."

Roundtree died Thursday at his Thibodaux home of complications from multiple
myeloma, his son said. Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the bone marrow; it can
be treated but there is no cure.

He was diagnosed with the disease several years ago, but it had only begun to
slow him down recently. He continued to bowl until four years ago and stopped
driving a few months ago.

Roundtree was accustomed to defying expectations.

"If you ask anybody what they thought my dad's age was, it was always 10 to 20
years younger than what it actually was," his son said.

Friends and family celebrated Roundtree's 93rd birthday with him at his home
Sunday. "I think that was his finish line," Gwain Roundtree said.

Roundtree is survived by his wife, Floyce, seven children, one brother, 21
grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, four
stepchildren, 11 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Richmond Boyd Sr.

'Cornerstone' of Lafourche community pushed his sons, others to succeed
By DAVID JACOBS
NYT Regional Newspapers

THIBODAUX -- As Richmond Boyd Jr. waited to learn the outcome of his Sept. 30
bid for Lafourche Parish School Board, his father, Richmond Sr., could barely
stand the suspense.

"He kept calling, and I kept saying, 'No, I don't have the results yet,' " Boyd
Jr. said. "When I got in the runoff, he was so happy. He said, 'You're going to
be in there, just work hard. Don't sit around, work for it.' "

As it turned out, his dad was right, but he didn't live to see his son's
victory. Richmond Boyd Sr., 72, died of a heart attack early Nov. 5, mere hours
before Richmond Jr. was elected to the School Board in the Nov. 7 runoff.

Boyd Sr. was from the St. Charles community, but was best known in the Alidore
community on La. 308 in Raceland.

He had a home on Williams Street, and ran the B n' R Café next door. B n' R
stands for Bessie, his wife, and Richmond.

Boyd Sr. was a school-bus driver for 22 years before retiring, but he kept the
café open right up until the end, even after Bessie died six years ago, Boyd Jr.
said.

"That was what kept him going," Boyd Jr. said. "From 5 until 11 (p.m.), that was
his time to mingle, too."

Boyd Sr.'s specialty was his chicken platter, which he would occasionally serve
for free if someone was truly needy, Boyd Jr. said. He said people "from near
and far" would find the café, even after the sign rotted away.

"He helped people in the community," Boyd Jr. said. "He would fuss with them,
but he would give them the shirt off his back."

He said one local woman got a scolding from Boyd Sr. when she landed in jail for
writing a bad check. But Boyd Sr. still put up the money to bond her out so she
could be with her children.

There were also a few people Boyd Sr. helped to send to jail. Boyd Jr. said he
didn't hesitate to call the cops on someone selling drugs anywhere near his home
and business.

"Don't sell that stuff around this street," he would say.

Gary Babin, assistant superintendent of Lafourche Parish schools, said he knew
Boyd Sr. for at least 15 years, going back to when Babin was assistant principal
at Raceland Upper Elementary and Boyd Sr. drove a bus there.

"He always had a smile," Babin said. "He never had a bad day."

Babin said Boyd Jr. drove extremely slow, but the kids always got to school
safely and on time.

"He was a genuinely caring individual. When the children did wrong he would
correct them, but he would hug them when they needed a friend."

Babin said Boyd Sr. took great pride in his three sons, and pushed them to do
well in school.

Babin said his nickname was "Rock."

"It takes a whole community to raise a child, and he was one of those
cornerstones," Babin said.

Boyd Sr. leaves behind Richmond, 49, and two other sons: Marvin, 46, and Curtis,
43, along with 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was a graduate of Raceland High School, and spent five years in the Army in
the 1950s, Boyd Jr. said.

Richmond Boyd Jr. said his two brothers are working to reopen the café.
