DENNIS M. VINING
      Dennis M. Vining, 55, died May 26, 2003, at his residence in Hammond.
      He was an Army veteran and a 29-year employee at Southeastern Louisiana 
University, where he worked as a refrigeration mechanics foreman.
      He was also president of Hammond High School's Booster Club and had been active 
in the club for many years.
      He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Liz" Cook Vining of Hammond; two 
daughters, Laura Terrebonne of Crossville, Tenn., and Christine Jones of Tickfaw; a son, 
Gerald J. Rousseau; two sisters, Viola Guiffreda of Ponchatoula and Alberta Meyers of 
Bedico; two brothers, Kenneth and Gary Wayne Vining, both of Ponchatoula; and four 
grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Ray and Corine Perilloux Vining; a 
sister, Esther Gordon; and three brothers, Walter L., Otto and Douglas Vining.
      Visitation will be today at Harry McNeely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, from 6 
p.m. to 10 p.m., with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue Monday after 8 until 
9:30 a.m. The Dominican Fathers will conduct the funeral and a 10 a.m. Mass of 
Christian Burial at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Hammond. Burial will be in 
Ponchatoula Cemetery.
      In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Dennis Vining 
Scholarship Fund, c/o Laura Terrebonne, 216 Azalea Ave., Hammond 70403. The 
scholarship will benefit local school children.

SANTA MARIE MONISTERE SALADINO
HARVEY - Santa Marie Monistere Saladino, 73, died May 30, 2003, at her residence.
      She is survived by her husband, Vincent Saladino; three sons, Vincent D., Kenneth J. 
and Steven G. Saladino; two daughters, Mary Ann Romano and Bernadette Saladino; two 
brothers, Albert and Sam Monistere; two sisters, Lena C. Alfonso and Lillian Saladino; 
six grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandson and two stepgreat-
grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her parents, Michaeli Angelo and Pelegrina Nicolosi 
Monistere; four brothers, Chris, Charles, Joseph and Anthony Monistere; and four sisters, 
Mary Ann Cook, Mary Lucy DiMaggio, Catherine Saladino and Mary Galiano.
      Visitation will be today at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expressway, 
Harvey, from 6 to 11 p.m. and Monday from 8 to 10:30 a.m. The funeral will follow at 11 
a.m. at Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church, Harvey. Burial will be in Westlawn 
Memorial Park Cemetery, Gretna.

ERNEST DYKES
      WILMER - Ernest "Buster" Dykes, 81, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at St. Tammany 
Hospital, Covington.
      A retired dairyman, he was a member of Wilmer Baptist Church.
      Survivors include his wife, Lexie Crowe Dykes of Wilmer; two sons, Ken and Milton 
Dykes, both of Franklinton; four daughters, Diane Strickland of Kentwood, Betty Brooks 
of Tylertown, Janie Smith and Mary Tate, both of Franklinton; 20 grandchildren, 33 
great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
      Four grandchildren preceded him in death.
      Visitation will be today at Crain Funeral Home, Franklinton, from 6 to 10 p.m. and 
Tuesday at Wilmer Baptist Church from 9 a.m. until the funeral at 11. The Rev. Richard 
Magee, the Rev. Duane Ball, the Rev. Jerry Cox and the Rev. Stan Statham will officiate. 
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

      PONCHATOULA - Bethel Taylor Butler, 94, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at North 
Oaks Medical Center, Hammond.
      She was a native of Sharon, Okla.
      She is survived by one daughter, Clesta McAlphine of Lewisville, Texas; one son, 
Robert Butler of Ponchatoula; one sister, Arlene Valentine of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 
four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Butler; her parents, Charles and 
Nona Wood Taylor; seven siblings and two great-grandchildren.
      Visitation will be Thursday at Westside Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until the Rev. 
Jay McIntosh conducts the funeral at 11. A graveside service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. 
at Altus Cemetery, Altus, Oklahoma.

half-sister, Anna R. Archer of Donaldsonville.
      He was preceded in death by his half-brother, Nelson J. Dugas Jr.; his grandmother, 
Elsie Gill; and his step-grandfather, Milton Gill.
      Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the Rev. Ray Johnson conducts the

      HUNGARIAN SETTLEMENT - Alexander Joseph Petho Sr., 79, died Monday, June 
2, 2003, at his home.
      He was a native of Hungarian Settlement in Albany, a decorated World War II 
veteran, past commander of Tucker A. Gregoire American Legion Post 258 of 
Springfield. He was a member of AMVETS Post 68, Hungarian Settlement Historical 
Society and Disabled Veterans Association. He was a member of St. Margaret Catholic 
Church and retired as an operating engineer from Kaiser Aluminum in Baton Rouge.
      He is survived by his wife, Franca Franz Petho of Hungarian Settlement, Albany; one 
son, Alexander J. Petho Jr.; two daughters, Juliana Robert Roberson and Laura Johnson, 
all of Hungarian Settlement, Albany; one brother, Rudolph Petho of Hammond; two 
sisters, Ruby Petho of Natalbany and Velma Kovach of Hammond; six grandchildren and 
six great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Juliana Albert Petho Vass and Nicholas 
Petho Sr.; four sisters, Rose Kish, Goldie Ervin, Priscilla Biben and Juliana Petho; five 
brothers, Nicholas Petho, Albert Petho, Andrew Petho, William Petho and Ernest Petho.
      Visitation will be Tuesday at Geisler Funeral Home, Albany, from 6 to 9 p.m. and 
Wednesday at St. Margaret's Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the church

      COVINGTON - Reba McKaskill Baham, 65, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at 
Lakeview Regional Medical Center.
      Survivors include her husband, Floyd Baham; two daughters, Monique Laurent of 
Baton Rouge and Sondi Hegwood of Covington; one son, Steven Baham of Covington; 
and nine grandchildren.
      The funeral was today at Bethel Reform Methodist Church, and burial was in Wilson 
Cemetery 2, Covington.

      SAGINAW, Mich. - Ora Lee Bond, 71, died Thursday, May 29, 2003.
      She was a native of Ponchatoula.

Daniels of Oceanside, Calif.; one sister, Helen Bolden of New Orleans; one brother, 
Ernest Dixon of Baker; her mother, Doretha Johnson of Oceanside; three grandchildren 
and two great-grandchildren.
      Her husband, Carl Bond; and her father, Joe Dixon preceded her in death.

      AMITE - Eva S. Knight, 92, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Hood Memorial Hospital, 
Amite.
      She was a housewife and native of Gurdon, Ark.
      Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Richardson of Chesbrough and Loretta K. 
Binder of Amite; one son, Sam Knight of Amite; eight grandchildren and 13 great-
grandchildren.
      Her husband, Henry S. Knight; her parents, John Henry and Ida Kay Scoggins; and 
three brothers preceded her in death.

Thursday from 8 a.m. until the Rev. John David Stewart conducts the funeral at 11.

      SLIDELL - Calvin L. Populis, 66, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at Slidell Memorial 
Hospital of congestive heart failure.
      A native of Folsom, he was pastor of Slidell Christ Gospel Church and a U.S. Army 
veteran.
      Survivors include his wife, Ann Populis; two sons, William R. Populis and Calvin L. 
Populis Jr.; three daughters, Dolores Populis, Beulah Annie Collins and Rebekah Boos; 
two stepdaughters, Cynthia Chisham and Tammy Shilo; two brothers, Ronald and Donald 
Baham; two sisters, Patsy Baham and Betsy Creel; and eight grandchildren.
      The funeral was Tuesday, and burial was in Slidell Memorial Cemetery.

      Survivors include her son, Reginald F. Braddock III of Lakeland; two sisters, Julia 
Rasberry and Iris Harris, both of Denham Springs; three grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren.
      Her husband, Reginald F. Braddock Jr. preceded her in death.

      A native of New Orleans, he was a retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel veteran 
of World War II and owner and operator of T.H. Burt & Son.
      Survivors include his wife, Audrey Pavitt Burt of Hammond; two daughters, Colleen 
Burt of Hammond, and Karen Coker of St. Augustine, Fla.; one son, Wayne Thomas Burt 
of Hammond; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
      His parents, Thomas Herman nd Philomena Sauve Burt; his brothers, Ben Allen Burt; 
and one sisters, Eugenie Burt Kerr preceded him in death.

      She was a homemaker.

Harvey, Leartine Morgan of Marrero, and Elois Jefferson of Marietta, Ga.; six sons, 
Thomas Holland Jr. of Hammond, Melvin Holland of South Bend, Indiana, Lionell 
Holland of Tuscan, Arizona, Larry Holland and William Holland, both of Independence, 
and Charles Holland of Roseland; one brother, Travis Barnett of Independence.
      Her husband, Thomas Holland Sr.; her father, George Barnett; her mother, Ruby 
Barnett; and one brother, Ricks "Midge" Barnett preceded him in death.

      NORCO - Blanche Oubre Kugler, 92, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at St. Charles 
Parish Hospital. 
      She was a native of Vacherie, a member of Ladies Alter Society, American Legion 
Auxiliary Post 195, St. Charles Council on Aging and the St. Charles Senior Citizens 
Club. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norco.
      Survivors include Doris K. St. Martin, Emile J. Kugler, Leona K. Durapau, Barry 
Kugler, Kirk Kugler, Sandy K. Weber; 25 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and six 
great-great-grandchildren.
      Her husband, Emile Kugler; her parents, Wiltz and Irma Stein Oubre; son, John G. 
Kugler, seven brothers and sisters; and four grandchildren preceded her in death.
      The funeral was today and burial was at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery.

      HOUSTON - Frances "Frankie" Robertson, 52, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at 
Tombal Hospital, Houston.
      He was a 15 veteran of the Houston Police Department.
      Survivors include his wife, Sharly Bradway Robertson; five daughters, Sandra 
Wilson, Tammy Pinestraw, Lakisha Benjamin, Tameca Veals and Frances Robertson; 
four sons, Frankie Robertson, Timothy Benjamin, Kendrick and Jamond Robertson; five 
sisters, Lucille Morris, Patricia Adams, Evelyn Lloyd, Erma Barze and Marsha Ricard; 
nine brothers, Hullon Vining, Hollis McAurthor, Larry, Robert Earl, Ernest Roy , James, 
Melvin, Keith and Chuck Robertson; and 14 grandchildren.
      The L.T. Maryland will conduct the funeral Sunday at 7 p.m. at Lincoln Park Baptist 
Church, Hammond. Burial will be Monday at 1 p.m. in Houston Memorial Park, 
Houston.

            FLUKER-Jimmie D. Brooks, 74, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at his home in 
Fluker.
      A native of Burce, MS, he worked as a laborer. 
      Survivors include a son, William P. Brooks of Fluker; three daughters, Cynthia 
Brooks Jones and Margaret B. Cyrian, both of Fluker, and Patricia Ann Brooks of 
Roseland; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Katie Brooks; his wife, 
Margaret Ross Brooks; a sister, Corneilea Shinn; two brothers and four sisters.
      Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 until 7 p.m. when Pastor Billy Johnson conducts 
the funeral in the Angelic Funeral Home. 
      Dismissal will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
      Burial will be in the Tangipahoa Cemetery.

      SPRINGFIELD-William "Bill" Kropog Sr., 70, died Friday at his home.
      A native of Springfield and former longtime resident of Bogalus, he worked at the 
Bogalusa Paper Mill for almost 30 years where he retired as the technical director. He 
was a longtime member of the Annunciation Catholic Church and School, where he 
served as it's first school board president, and was also a longtime active member of the 
Knights of Columbus, Council 1819, in Bogalusa, where he served as Grand Knight. 
      Survivors include his wife, Barbara E. Kropog of Springfield; two sons, William 
Kropog Jr. of Covington and Jean Christopher M. Kropog of Springfield; a daughter, 
Michelle Elizabeth K. Duhe of Mandeville; three brothers, Steve Kropog of San 
Francisco, CA, Joseph Kropog of Albany and Alex Kropog of Springfield; three sisters, 
Elizabeth Kelly of Troy, AL, Pauline Frisbie of Springfield, and Helen Gottchalk of 
Goodbee; three grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Elizabeth Juhasz Kropog; three 
brothers, Mike, John Paul and George Kropog.
      Visitation will be today from 6 p.m. until 10 and on Monday from 8 a.m. until 10:30. 
      Religious services will start at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Margaret Catholic Church in 
Albany with Monsignor Leo Guillot officiating.

      LORANGER - Lucius Marion McCoy, 76, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at his home.
      A native of Loranger, he was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, a member of 
American Legion Post 255 and a World War II veteran.
      Survivors include four daughters, Charlene Sloan of Kentwood, Elizabeth Klein and 
Rosalie M. Ogima, both of Loranger, and Shirley Overmier of Covington; 13 
grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Harper McCoy; and his parents, Alvis 
and Lillie Berne.

      BATON ROUGE - Bridget Anne Legendre Darlington, 30, died Monday, June 9, 
2003, after a battle with cancer.
      She was a native of Vacherie and a graduate of E.D. White Catholic School in 
Thibodaux and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge with a bachelor of science 
degree in quantitative business analysis. She was most recently the research director for 
Grubb & Ellis/Coldstream Real Estate Advisors, Inc. in Bedford, N.H., and a former 
research analyst for the Louisiana Legislative Fiscal Office in Baton Rouge.
      She is survived by her husband, Andrew Carey Darlington of Baton Rouge; her 
parents, Percy J. Legendre Jr. and Elaine Waguespack Legendre of Vacherie; two 
brothers, Percy Legendre III of Tampa, Fla., and Reginald Legendre of DeRidder; six 
sisters, Lynette L. Eliser of St. Amant, Angela L. James and Elaine L. Curley, both of 
Alexandria, Natalie L. Harper of Baton Rouge, Lenore L. Charlton of Bluffton, S.C., and 
Helen L. Bohan of Bedford, N.H.; and her paternal grandmother, Vernice Peltier 
Legendre of Westwego.
      She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Francis and Cecile 
Schexnayder Waguespack Sr.; and her paternal grandfather, Percy J. Legendre Sr.

THOMAS J. HOGAN SR.
      HICO, Texas - Thomas J. "Tom" Hogan Sr., 80, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at his 
home.
      He was a native and lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Miss., a member of the Dixie 
Division of Company B, Culkin Lions Club, Sheet Metal Local 406, Knights of 
Columbus and St. Paul Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War 
II and was the owner of Hogan Sheet Metal Co. for some 60 years before retiring in 
1998. He moved to Hico, Texas, in August.
      He is survived by his wife, Mary W. Hogan of Hico, Texas; two daughters, Marianne 
Nsour of Fremont, Calif., and Susan Schepens of Richland, Wash.; six sons, Thomas 
Hogan Jr. of Hammond, Michael Hogan of Edwards, Miss., Jerome Hogan and Philip 
Hogan, both of Hico, and Martin Hogan and Denis Hogan, both of Vicksburg; one 
brother, Danny Hogan of New Roads; two sisters, Mable Ellington of Natchez, Miss., and 
Lucy Sutterfield of Yazoo City, Miss.; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Lucy Roddy Hogan; one son,

Advocate Sports section and former announcer with Southeastern Louisiana University 
basketball. He was co-founder and former executive director of the National Association 
of State Department of Migrant Education, was retired from the Louisiana State 
Department of Education and was a published writer in the field of education.
      He is survived by his wife, Linda Tarver Wright of Denham Springs; one son, 
Christopher Dalton Wright of Denham Springs; two daughters, Elizabeth W. Dunn of 
Arlington, Va., and A. Lynnette Wright of Denham Springs; one brother, Ronald Wright 
of Ponchatoula; and one grandchild.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Lee Wright Sr. and Eunice Fannaly 
Wright; and one infant sister.

      ALBANY - Chester Walter Gill, 80, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at North Oaks 
Medical Center, Hammond.
      A native and lifelong resident of Albany, he was a member of Bethlehem Baptist 
Church where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a U.S. Army veteran 
of World War II and timber consultant.
      Survivors include his wife, Florence Davis Gill of Albany; one son, Bruce Gill of 
Albany; three daughters, Sheila Gill Kinchen and Sybil Stewart, both of Albany, and 
Teressa Gill Kraft Black of Pascagoula, Miss.; seven grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, John Calvin and Aurilla Moore Gill; five

      A native of Bay Springs, Miss., she was a retired seamstress and an avid gardener.
      She is survived by five daughters; Frances Thompson and Mary Johnson, both of 
Baton Rouge, Betty Irving of Lilburn, Ga., Carolyn Mistoler of Hammond and Marsha 
Reid of Roseland; two sons, Leonard Mistoler of Columbia, S.C., and Dennis Mistoler of 
Winter Park, Fla.; one brother, Jessie Yelverton of Pine Bluff, Ark.; 13 grandchildren and 
12 great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Mary S. Yelverton; one son, 
Jimmy Dean Mistoler; two sisters, Leona Daniels and Estelle Flemming; and one 
granddaughter.

      Charles E. Hyde, 81, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at his home.
      He was a native of Chesbrough, a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana College and 
Louisiana State University and retired from the faculty of the agriculture department of 
Southeastern Louisiana University. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a 
charter member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
      Survivors include his wife, Doris Corkern Hyde; two daughters, Karen Ott and 
Pamela Wall; three grandchildren; one brother, Edwin Hyde; and two sisters, Eugenia 
Hyde and Clara Heiman.
      He was preceded in death by his parents Cornelious Jessie "Neal" Hyde and Eva 
Nesom Hyde; and brothers, C.J. Hyde Jr., Percy Hyde and Claude Hyde.

      Doris Guy McMillan, 90, died today, June 19, 2003, at North Oaks Medical Center, 
Hammond.
      She was born in the Knoxo Community in Walthal County, Miss. She was a teacher 
in the Mississippi school system and a teacher in Hammond public school system having 
taught at Hammond Eastside and Westside, Woodland Park and Mooney Elementary 
schools. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Hammond.
      She is survived by two children, Henry McMillan of Byrdstown, Tenn., and Jeannine 
Gardener of Hammond; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, D.J. McMillan Jr.; her parents, Henry 
Louis Guy and Annettie Pittman Guy; and a brother, George Henry Guy.
      Visitation will be today at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, from 6 
to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 8 until the funeral at 9:30 a.m. The funeral will be at 10 at 
First Baptist Church, Hammond. Burial will be in Tylertown Cemetery, Tylertown, 
Miss., at 2 p.m.

      NEW ORLEANS - Ella Mae Moore, 51, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at her 
home.
      She was a native of Fluker.
      She is survived by four sisters, Joann Robertson and Clarena McGee, both of Fluker, 
Beatrice Henderson and Litha Galmon, both of Amite; one brother, Orey Julius 
Robertson of Fluker.
      She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

      KENTWOOD - Clyde Preston Sr., 72, died Saturday, June 14, 2003.

Preston and Vaniecy Hudson; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

      Joseph "Joe" Salvador Tantillo Jr., 43, died Monday, June 16, 2003. 
      He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 10178, member of 4th 
Degree, life member of National Rifle Association and the Louisiana Hereford 
Association.
      He is survived by his wife, Tammy Evans Tantillo of Hammond; one daughter, 
Heather May Tantillo of Hammond; one son, Tyler Joseph Tantillo of Hammond; two 
sisters, Jeanna Wild of Albany and Jody Smith of Tickfaw; two brothers, Pat Tantillo and 
Jory Tantillo, both of Hammond; his father, Joseph S. Tantillo Sr. of Hammond; his 
stepmother, Elouise M. Tantillo of Hammond; and his paternal grandmother, Mary 
Bivona Tantillo of Hammond.
      He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Wild; his paternal grandfather, Sam 
Tantillo; and his maternal grandparents, Sam and Frances Covington Wild.

Albany. Burial was in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Hammond.

      He was preceded in death by his father, Christopher Lee Traylor; his mother, Ola

      INDEPENDENCE - Johnny Monroe Bryant Jr., 75, died June 21, 2003, at Lallie

      He was a native of Springfield and a retired U.S. Army specialist.

      He was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Kirk; his father, Kirk Byrd; and three 
brothers, Marshall Byrd, John Byrd and Tommy Byrd.

      METAIRIE - Frances Rosalie Guillot Guillot, 80, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at 
her home.
      She was a native of New Orleans, a graduate of Mc-Donogh High School and a 
member of Our Lady of Divine Providence and helped serve as a volunteer in the 
cafeteria for nine years. She retired from Destrehan Drugs and became a homemaker.
      She is survived by one son, Ralph D. Guillot of Ponchatoula and one daughter, Judy 
Booker; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Dave Guillot; two sisters, Sophie 
Brindell and Eva Bonfanti; and three brothers, Harold Guillot, Leonard Guillot and Earl 
Guillot.

      A native of Natalbany and a longtime resident of Amite, she was a homemaker. She 
was a member of First Southern Methodist Church, Amite, and Camellia Chapter 142, 
Order of Eastern Star.
      Survivors include her daughter, Carol Morris Clark of Doniphan, Mo.; two sons, 
Charles Edgar Morris of Dallas and James Timothy Morris of Conroe, Texas; two sisters, 
Gena Wall Calcote of Brookhaven, Miss., and Geraldine Wall Anderson of Haughton;

Rouge; and two grandchildren.

Regional Medical Center.
      She was a native of Detroit and a homemaker.
      She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Christon of Abita Springs; two sisters, 
Virgie Fields of Abita Springs and Evelyn Christon of Albion, Mich.; and six 
grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her parents.

      NORCO - Charles Percy Jackson Sr., 67, died Monday, June 23, 2003.
      He was a native and lifelong resident of Norco, president and owner of Jackson 
Vending Service, Inc., and former worker for Shell Oil.
      He is survived by his wife, Veda Tridico Jackson; his children, Michael D. Jackson, 
Charles P. Jackson Jr., Lisa Jackson Macaluso, Veda Jackson Dawson and Mary Jackson 
Naquin; nine grandchildren; one brother, John K. Jackson Jr.; and one sister, Donyce 
Jackson Smith. 
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Zeb Stanga and John Kent Jackson Sr.

      Rudolph Raymond Petho Sr., 71, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at the Hammond 
Rehabilitation Hospital.
      A retired plumber, he was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of 
Tucker A. Gregoire American Legion Post 258 of Springfield. He was a member of the 
Hungarian Settlement Historical Society and a lifetime member of the Knights of 
Columbus Council of Hammond.
      He is survived by his wife, Mary L. McDonald Petho of Hammond; five sons, 
Andrew of Minden, Allen of Conyers, Ga., Russell of San Diego, Rudolph Jr. of 
Independence and Eric of New Orleans; one daughter, Denise Petho Toole of Arkansas; 
two stepdaughters, Tracey Lynn and Ruby Ann McDonald, both of Hammond; two 
sisters, Ruby Petho of Natalbany and Velma Kovach of Hammond; six grandchildren and 
two step-great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his mother, Juliana Albert Petho Vass; his father, 
Nicholas Petho Sr.; four sisters, Rose Kish, Goldie Ervin, Priscilla Biben and Juliana 
Petho; and six brothers, Nicholas Albert, Andrew, William, Ernest and Alexander Petho.

      AMITE - Rosetta Thompson, 71, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at her home.

      HARVEY - Philip D. Saladino Sr., 55, died Friday, June 27, 2003, at his Harvey 
residence.
      He was a native of New Orleans and an electrician with IBEW Local 130. He was a 
member of the Italian American Society.
      Survivors include his wife, Susan Cash Saladino; his children, Philip D. Saladino Jr., 
Sam Joseph Saladino and Joseph Jude Saladino; his parents, Philip James Saladino and 
Lillian Monistere Saladino; his sisters, Judy Saladino Daigle and Joyce Saladino Spera; 
and two grandchildren.
      His brother, Michael James Saladino, preceded him in death.

FRED SMITH VREELAND
      MANDEVILLE - Fred Smith Vreeland, 80, died Thursday, June 26, 2003 at his 
home.
      He was born in Memphis, Tenn., and was a former resident of Knoxville, Tenn. He 
was a member of St. Michael Episcopal Church in Mandeville. He earned a degree in 
engineering from the University of Tennessee and City of New York College. He was 
founder of Vreeland Engineers, Inc. 
      He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and in the Phillipines 
where he was assigned to rebuild the electrical plant for Manila. He was also awarded a 
Bronze Star.
      He is survived by his wife, Sue Marlar Vreeland, formerly of Hammond and current 
resident of Mandeville; and a stepson, Thomas L. Marlar of Mandeville.
      He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Bickford Vreeland; a son, Frederick 
Bickford Vreeland; and one daughter, Victoria Ann Vreeland.
      Visitation will be Monday at St. James Episcopal Church, Knoxville, from 11 a.m. 
until the Rev. Joseph E. Ballard conducts the funeral at noon. Burial will be in Lynnhurst 
Cemetery.
      In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of St. Tammany or St. Michael

grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis A. and Algora Hawkins Achord; two 
brothers, Cecil Achord and Jimmy Achord; and a sister, Leona Jones.

Ralph Samuels; and two sisters, Martha Armstrong and Beatrice Johnson.
