Petition to Thomas Butler, Judge of the District Court, Parish
of Feliciana. Petition of "...Elizabeth Adams (widow of the late
Elijah Adams, dec'd) of Feliciana..." states that she and Elijah
were married 9 July 1815 in the Mississippi Territory and lived
in Feliciana Parish for 20 years before his death, 29 January 1816.
Elizabeth gave birth, 27 May 1816, to Elijah's daughter, named
Margaret, who has "since died" and Elizabeth is her (Margaret's)
only heir. When he died, Elijah left "property real and personal"
consisting of "...Land, Negroes, Cattle, horses & farming utinsels,
also household furnature and credits within the parish..." valued
at $32,179.25. Elizabeth asks for $3,784, as her part and the part
of deceased daughter Margaret. Elijah left the following "legitimate
children: Charlott, wife of Amos Webb; Arthur Adams; Lydia Adams;
Susan Adams, all of the age of puberty" represented by Amos Webb,
their curator. Also, Frederick Adams, Sarah Adams, Celia Adams, and
Elijah Adams, represented by "the said Amos", their tutor, "all of
said [Feliciana] Parish". Widow Elizabeth and these children are
stated to be "the only heirs or representatives" of the estate of
Elijah Adams.
"Your petitioner further shews that the sd. Webb hath taken
possession & now has the whole of sd. estate under his control
& Management & refuses to...pay over...to your petitioner, that
part or portion of sd. estate..." Elizabeth asks that Amos &
Charlotte Webb and the other heirs be required to pay her $5,574
as her portion of the estate. Witnesses: [signed] John Browder,
Samuel Brown, Robert Lassin[?]. [signed] C. V. Dunn[?], atty for
plaintiff. Dated 9 August 1815.

presence of John H. Johnson, Feliciana Parish Judge, by appraisers

according to actual measurments, 600 arpents, valued at $9,500

Inventory of the estate of Elizabeth Adams, late wife of Samuel
Adams: David Dortch and Feltus O. Chisholm, estimators.
"done at the request of Samuel Adams, the Husband of the dec. who
is tutor to his two minor children William and Barton Adams, who are
two of the heirs of the dec'd, and in his presence, and in the presence
of Samuel Freeland, the husband of Mary Ayres, who is also one of
the heirs of the dec'd, done in the town of Jackson...25th day of
September 1829, in presence of John Crenan and Richard T. Christmas,
assisting witnesses."

No real estate listed. Estate consists of livestock and household
furnishings, stated to be "some property [that] was given in as
community property held between the dec'd and her husband Samuel
Adams". Negro boy Sollomon, now in the possession of Samuel Adams,
$500.00. Negro boy Isaac, now in the possession of Samuel Freeland,
$400.00. One Negro woman Milly now in possession of Archibald D.
Palmer, purchased by him at [a] sheriff's sale at the Suit [of]
Archibald D. Palmer vs. Samuel & Elizabeth Adams, $300.00.

Total value of estate: $1,396.12 1/2

"A bill of sale given by John Dortch to Elizabeth Ayers and the
heirs of her body by William Ayers, for a negro [had "woman",
crossed out, wrote "girl"] named Milly, $450 cash, paid 18 December
1807. Witnessed by Samuel Smartz and John Stinner[?] and acknowledged
by John Dortch before L. C. Griffith on the 24th day of October, 1814,
and recorded by F. A. Browder, clerk, in Book C, page 379, on the 14th
day of February 1815, and marked with the letter A."

"A bill of sale for a Negro man named Solomon given by John Dortch to
his daughter, Elizabeth Ayers, and her heirs by William Ayers [the words
"by Wm Ayers" is interlined, apparently in different ink] $550.00 cash
paid 26 May 1812. Witnesses, Samuel Smartz and John Stinner, and
acknowledged by John Dortch before L. C. Griffith, P.J., on the
24th day of October, 1814. Recorded by F. A. Browder, clerk, in
Book C, page 380, on the 14th day of February 1815, and marked
letter B."

Inventory closed, slaves Isaac and Milly are left with Samuel
Adams. Slave Isaac is left with Samuel Freeland, "the Negro
woman Milly is now in the possession of Archibald D. Palmer."

Petition to Judge by Robert W. Newport of E.F.P., who is a
creditor of the succession of Elizabeth Adams, "late of the
parish of East Feliciana". Newport states that Elizabeth left
the following "legitimate children": John Ayers, residing in
W.F.P., a minor; Polly Freeland [had "wife", crossed out, wrote
"widow"] of Samuel Freeland; William Adams and Barton Adams,
minors under tutorship of Samuel Adams", "all residing in the
parish of West Feliciana." Newport asks that a tutor be appointed
to these heirs, and they be ordered to accept or reject the
succession of Elizabeth Adams. [signed] James M. Bradford,
atty for plaintiff.

Petition to Feliciana Parish Judge by Samuel Adams, "curator
of the estate of William E. Adams", states that Samuel Adams
has settled the estate, and is entitled to 1/2 of it, "the same
property having been given by their father to them jointly,
which he is ready to prove." He further asks to be discharged
as curator. John H. Johnson, P.J., sets 16 September 1816 as
the date for the examination of the estate papers, after due
notice is given in the "Florida Sentinel". Judge's decision
dated 17 August 1816.

A much more detailed listing of the debts and credits of the joint
estate of William E. and Samuel Adams. The final accounting shows a
balance due to the heirs of William E. Adams of $154.47 1/2, "exclusive
of Eighty Dollars (more or less) noted in the Inventory of the Joint
Estates, as Wages due from the United States, for military services
rendered by the said William E. Adams during the invasion of the
State by the British."

Petition to the Judge of the Court of Probates, E.F.P., of
William Vaughn, James Vaughn, Valentine Vaughn, and Louis Vaughn,
minors above the age of puberty assisted by their curator, John
Morgan, and of Peter Allen, all of E.F.P., shows that they are the
legal joint owners and holder of a certain negro man named [Davis
or David], about nineteen years and worth about 5 or 6 hundred dollars.
They ask that experts be appointed to appraise him, and he be sold
"to make a partition between them". [all sign]

Tuesday, 23 December 1828: Petition granted and John Solser and
John Lee be appt'd experts. Thos. W. Scott, P.J.

Judge Scott orders negro sold and proceeds divided among petitioners.
23 Dec. 1828.

"We, John Lee and John Selser, having been appt'd and sworn as
experts by the probate court whether a certain negro man named
David, held in common among the heirs of Elizabeth Allen, dec'd,
(there being five in number) could be conveniently partitioned
in kind among said heirs, reports that in our opinion he cannot
without loss or injury to said heirs." [signed] John Selser, John Lee.

"Inventory and estimation of a negro boy named Dave" about 16
years, belonging to the succession of Elizabeth Allen, dec.,
made by Thos. W. Scott, assisted by Samuel Lee and Daniel
Cleveland, as experts, in the Town of Clinton, 2 February 1829,
in presence of John C. White and John Bennett, assisting witnesses,
and Peter Allen and William Vaughn, two of the heirs, with William
Vaughn acting as curator to the minor heirs of Elizabeth Allen,
and also in presence of James Vaughn, one other of the heirs of
the deceased. The negro boy Dave estimated at $500.00. Inventory

acres, and bounded S by Courtney's land, vacant land on the
E, W & N, being the same on which Allen Cook now resides
(also the entire stock of hogs & six cows & calfs", sold
to Allen Cook for $900.00. Wittnesses: Robert Nettles, John

A negro girl named Easter, aged about 25 years, separately

states that he holds property in common with his minor child,
William Livingston Allison, which consists of the tract of
land and negro woman in Doc 1. Minor child has the following
"relations": [had "Robert Allison", crossed out, wrote
"Alexander Courtney"], William Vaughn, James Vaughn, Jesse
Morgan, and James Morgan. Undertutor is John Morgan, and
petitioner asks that a family meeting be held to approve sale
of the property of his deceased wife. [signed] Robert Allison.
