# 300 Succession of James CAGE
1 November 1854
The petition of Harry CAGE says James CAGE of Terrebonne Parish died 25 July
1854. He left an holographic will. Harry CAGE requests that the will can
be admitted for probate.

Affidavit of Albert CAGE says that James CAGE died 25 July 1854 and the will
was written by James CAGE.

James CAGE bequeaths to his illegitimate children, William, Thomas and
George
$30,000 each, and to their sister Martha E. BUDD the sum of $12,000. To the
mother of the above
legatees, $7,000. These legatees should be paid first; to my illegitimate
children I give the following
slaves:
William: YORK, Jr.; Little MARGARET, DENNIS, CELIA ANN, LUCINDA, Ellen
JOHNSON, ALLICE, YORK, Sr. and JOSEPH
Thomas : John WRIGHT, ADELINE, DANIEL, JOE, SEPTIMA, CLORINDA, LOUIS,
CORRINA, John DAVIS and Zoe TAYLOR
George : John PATESON, KITTY (ALLSAY'S daughter), MELINDA, EMELINE,
AMERICA, JIFFERSON and MANUEL
I appoint my brother, Harry CAGE, guardian and curator to my minor children,
William, Thomas and George, and when he has secured to the legatees and
their mother, SUSAN, and then he is to receive a loan of $10,000. If he
can't serve, then Harry T. HAYS should serve in his place.
I bequeath my watch to my son George; the books are to be divided equally
among my sons. To my brothers: Harry CAGE, Albert G. CAGE and Robert H.
CAGE, $1,000 each; to my brother Edward CAGE $2,000; to his son Alba D. CAGE
$1,000, to my sister Priscilla HALE's children and their representative
$4,000.
To Fancey, widow of my brother William [CAGE] I leave $500; to her daughter
Corinna $1,000.
To my brother John CAGE's children as follows: to Edward $500, John CAGE
$1,000.
To my brothers Sostain [Lofton?] CAGE $500, to his children Albert and Fanny
each $1,000 and to Elizabeth COLEMAN $500.
To my brother Reuben CAGE and his son Goide [?], $1,000 each.
Of the sum left to Reuben, he is requested at his death to leave the eldest
daughter of his daughter Sophia FRANKLIN, and should I survive Reuben CAGE
then this $1,000 is intended for him is to go to the granddaughter above.
To Polaski CAGE, I give the house and place which he now inhabits together
with the household and kitchen furniture and farming utensils together with
all the stock of every description and one half of the Negroes with the
condition that on demand he shall deliver the other half to my executors.
To my niece Minerva HUBBARD and her children $1,500 and to Priscilla BARRY
$500 or a memento.
For Sarah E. LEA, daughter of Herman A. and Betsey HAYS, I give $1,500. To
[Rlna/Rblna?] Stephens HAYS, daughter of William HAYS, Deceased, $500.
To John CARR, my brother-in-law, I give $2,000.
To my sister Betsey MOLELON [MORTON] and her children $1,000
To James McKAY $5,000
To Delia Ann, mulatto girl, daughter of Kitty THOMAS, $1,500
To Harry T. HAYS $1,000
If after the above legatees are paid there remains $40,000 [my executor is]
to take$10,000 and distribute it (at their discretion) to the poorest of my
relations. Should the remaining not equal $40,000, then reduce the amount to
be distributed to $5,000.
Whatever should remain after that, divide one quarter of it between my sons
William, Thomas and George and the other three quarters to my legitimate
heirs. He appoints executors his brothers Harry and Albert G. CAGE and my
nephew Harry T. HAYS
7 October 1850 - Codicil 1: whatever remains, to his 3 sons
29 April 1851 - Codicil 2: The provision for Polaski CAGE is revoked, the
bequest to James McKAY is reduced to $3,000; the bequest to SUSAN is reduced
to $6,000; The bequest to the yellow girl, DELIA ANN, add $1,000 making her
total $2,500; the bequest to the illegitimate children of Albert F. CAGE,
deceased, in the hands of my executors $1,000 for their education.
5 May 1851 - Codicil 3: To his three illegitimate sons and additional
$5,000 each and to his illegitimate daughter, Martha E. BUDD, add to her
legacy to make the total $25,000. [~ end of will ~]
1 November 1854 - Petition to probate the will
1 November 1854 - Petition of Harry CAGE says he is willing to accept the
obligation as curator and executor.
1 November 1854 - Order for an appraisement of the inventory of the estate.
19 March 1855
Inventory was taken at the late residence on Grand Caillou 4 miles below
Houma [now the area of Woodlawn Ranch Road]. The witnesses were Joseph
AYCOCK and Alfred J. DELPORTE. The appraisers were Richard E. BUTLER and
William S/L?. MAYFIELD. The slaves of the estate of James CAGE and Harry
CAGE Family, two thirds belong to James CAGE and one third
belongs to Harry CAGE.

arpents, together with the sugar house, engine draining machine, saw mill
and all the improvements thereunto bounded above by land of Robert R. BARROW
and below by land of MAYFIELD and Son appraised at $132,100. The total value
of the estate was $306,312.
24 March 1855 - A petition for a supplemental inventory. [not found in this
document]
12 May 1855 - The petition of Harry CAGE, tutor requests an undertutor be
appoint for the minors William, Thomas and George.
14 May 1855 - Harry CAGE requests a partition of the estate and a family
meeting of friends: Charles TENNANT, Frank GAGNE, Henry NEWELL, Aubin BOURG,
A. J. DELAPORTE. The meeting was held before F. S. GOODE, Notary Public.
Special tutors were appointed: for William, Richard F. GRINAGE; for Thomas,
James BLAHUT, and for George, Adolphe VERRET. They recommend a sale of the
estate to effect a partition.
