MEMORIAN Whereas the hand of death has entered the
portals of our evangelistic club and in the Providence
of Almighty God, Brother James A. Bush has finished
his earthly labors, and answered the summons to enter
into his eternal rewards; Resolved: That we the
members of the Oglethorpe Evangelistic Club experience
a distinct loss in the going away of our brother. He

departure from us is sad to us in the parting, his
influence for good abides with us, and we are resolved

Master, that some bright day we will clasp hands again
on the happy golden shore. As a club we express our
heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our
brother, and assure them of our abiding friendship and
prayers. Signed: Oglethorpe Evangelistic Club J. J.

There will NOT be a local or Macon County Newspaper
that might have an obit for Margaret Brewer, Mother of
Sararh (Brewer) Hill. There is a paper in 1852 that is
very hard to read, then it skips to about 1916 . In
Washington Memorial Library in Macon there is a set of
books, containing abstracts of Death Notices that were
published in the Macon Messenger. It covers the state
if someone sent the notice in. I have found a number
of notices that I needed, then I have been very
disappointed in not finding some that I thought vital
to my research. The next best thing to look for in
Macon County is to find the Church she might have
belonged to and seek out any old records that might be
left. In your Hill Family Research, do you have any
mention of a religious affiliation? BROOKS Family,

Executor of my last will & Testament this May 3, 1864
Wit: Benj Harris Signed: Sampson English James E.
Mathews James Mathews CODICIL Whereas, I Sampson
English did on the third day of May in the year one
thousand, eight Hundres & sixty four, sign & publish
my last will & testament. I did bequeath to my beloved
children certain negroes, and whereas by an Act of the
Government, said negroes have been declared free,
therefore I desire that the settlement of my worldly
affairs, no consideration shall be had to the negroes
as property and that no one of my children shall
refund to my estate any money on account. Sept.
26,1865 Wit: Jas. Mathis/Mathews Signed: Sampson
English W.H.Harris A. A. Lowe Probated: January Term
of Court of Ordinary 1866 Jno. L. Parker, Ordinary.

How can we reconcile the January, 1866 probate date of
Sampson ENGLISH's will with the 1875 tombstone date in
the Englishville, Macon Co.,GA cemetery? Is the 1866
date only for registering the codicil? Or is the
cemetery date just wrong??

Today I have looked at the Will of Sampson English
again on microfilm and the date that it is written is
unclear BUT the Probate date is definitely January
Term 1866. There is a possibility that the Death Date
on the tombstone could be 1865 rather than 1875 as
stated in the book. As soon as I can, I will go to the
cemetery and look. Probably will be next week before I
can do this as it is approximately 20 to 25 miles from
my house but I will check it for you as soon as I can.

Sampson English was my Great Great Grandfather and
I've visited the grave recently. The date of death on
the gravestone is definitely 1875. My Grandmother,
Mary E. Dykes told me prior to her death in 1946 that
her Grandfather died around the time of her wedding in
1875. I can't Understand the probate date unless ,at
that time the practice might have been to register for
probate when a new will or changes were made. Sampson

on the marker. The marker shows 1875 [I took a picture
of the marker] but I am now, thoroughly convinced that
he actually died in 1865 since his Obituary appeared
in the Upatoi Baptist Association Minutes of Sept. 8,
1866 and the fact that he does not appear in the 1870
census with his family. In addition, his Will was
probated in the January Term of Court of Ordinary 1866
by John L. Parker, Ordinary.

PROMINENT CITIZEN DIES OF INJURIES - Mr. Tolbert E.
Fowler, of Ideal, Instantly Killed By Gin. Mr. T. E.
Fowler, of Ideal, one of the most prominent, respected
and loved men of this section of Georgia, was
instantly killed in his gin in Ideal, Saturday
afternoon at 3 o'clock. The shocking news of the heart
breaking tragedy was received here early Saturday
afternoon and caused universal sorrow here and
throughout this section. It appears the machinery
needed some slight repair which Mr. Fowler attempted
to correct, when he was jerked into the saws, horribly
mangling the unfortunate man about the head and body.
Death was practically instantaneous. Mr. Fowler was a
leading citizen of his community, kind lovable and
charitable. He was the friend of everybody and loved
by all classes. He stood for all that was good and was
a power in his community. The deceased was a
successful farmer and business man, and his home life
was perfect. He was forty six years of age and was
born and reared in the vicinity, where he spent his
useful life and met his tragic death. Mr. Fowler was a
consistent member of the Baptist Church, and was
always to be found at services. The deceased is
survived by relatives throughout the state and by the
immediate family, his widow, who was Miss Mamie Payne,

YOUTH DIES OF BROKEN NECK CLOVIS GILBERT WAS INJURED
TWO WEEKS AGO An unusually sad death occurred on
Saturday last, when Clovis Gilbert, of Ideal, age
fifteen years, passed away at the hospital at Plains.
From information received here it seems the lad with
several companions were in bathing in Cedar Creek near
Ideal. Young Gilbert climbed a tree and dived into the
water, evidently miscalculating the water's depth. His
head struck the bottom, breaking the unfortunate
youth's neck. He was rushed to Wise Brother's Hospital
at Plains, where he received the best of medical
attention. Medical science was exhausted in the last
desperate efforts to save him, but to no avail and
death ensued Saturday. Gilbert was an exceedingly
popular boy and was a favorite with his playmates. He
was the only son of Mrs. W. R. Gilbert. The deceased
is survived by his mother, Mrs. W. R. Gilbert and one
sister, Miss Zelna Gilbert. Funeral and interment took
place in Ideal Sunday afternoon. [Note: W.R. Gilbert
