Descendants of WILLIAM B Grant

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM B1 GRANT was born 1793 in South Carolina,
and died October 09, 1847 in Columbus, Muscogee County,
Georgia. He married SARAH WOFFORD 1816 in Habersham
County, Georgia, daughter of NATHANIEL WOFFORD and
LYDIA HOPPER. She was born May 02, 1800 in Franklin
County, Georgia, and died May 02, 1882 in Gordon
County, Georgia.

Marriage Notes for WILLIAM GRANT and SARAH WOFFORD:

William B. Grant was born about 1790/1800 either in
South Carolina or Georgia. The first record we find of
William B. Grant, shows up in Franklin County, Georgia
where he served in the War of 1812. He served in
"Jones Georgia Militia" from November 21 1814 till May
20, 1815. Sarah Grant latter received a petition for
William's service in the War of 1812. I am a member of
the "National Society of the Daughters of 1812" on
William's service.

William B. Grant married Sarah Wofford 1817 in
Habersham County, Georgia. Sarah "Sallie" was born in
Franklin County, Georgia May 2, 1800, she was the
daughter of Nathaniel Wofford and Lydia Ann Hopper, who
resided at the time in the Wofford Settlement, which
was established about 1792/93 by Col. William Wofford,
Nathaniel's father.

We find William and Sarah Grant on the 1820 Census of
Habersham County, Georgia with two small sons Nathaniel
and William Grant, Jr. Charlotte was born there also
in 1822. On this 1820 Census, is listed a John Grant
over 45 years old, I believe this is William's father,
but have no proof of this. (This is incorrect. John was
the son of Lieut. William Grant of Anderson Co. S.C.
They could have been related in some way but I haven't
found any info as yet to connect them. ) By 1823
William and Sarah are living in DeKalb County, Georgia,
where Nathaniel, Sarah's father, had received a land
grant. They are listed on 1830 Census of DeKalb County
and their next three children George, Lydia Ann (our
ancestor) and John Grant were born there.

From all the records, it indicates that William B.
Grant and his family followed, his father-in-law
Nathaniel Wofford into Indian lands. They are listed
of Whites given permission to live on Indian Lands in
1830/31. Both are on a list of petitioners from the
Salacoe Settlement in 1832. This may have been in the
area of Shag Hill, where it was once called Wofford's
Crossroads, a few miles south of Fairmount, Georgia.
Also that year, 1832, William Grant and Nathaniel
Wofford are on Jurors List of Cherokee County and a
voter's list for first election of County Officers in
Cherokee County, dated February 6, 1832.

By 1834, William and Sarah are living in Murray County,
Georgia, that latter in the years becomes Cass County.
This is where William and Sarah Grant settled to raise
their family. William B. Grant, served in the Florida
"Seminole Indian War of 1836/7." He was in the
"Battalion of Georgia Mounted Volunteers," commanded by
Maj. Nelson and himself, Capt. William B. Grant. He
enrolled November 20, 1836 at Kellog Store, Forsythe
County, Georgia and was mustered out September 23, 1837
in Hall County, Georgia. Sarah Grant, later in 1851
applied for Bounty Land for William B. Grant's Florida
Indian War Service.

In 1840 William and his family are found on the Cass
County Census. William B. Grant appears to have been a
well educated man, as he became a Captain in the
Georgia Militia and was said to have been very active
in politics. Family history given, states William
eventually became in control of sixteen sections of
land (over 10,000 aces) in Cass County Georgia and up
into Murray County to the edge of the Carter lands,
where he was stopped. Family history also has it, that
Capt. William B. Grant and and his sons gathered horses
by whatever means possible and William sold them to the
military.

For some reason unknown, some of William B. Grant's
land was seized and sold at auction on May 28, 1845,
with James and Thomas Wofford, Sarah's brothers, being
the highest bidders. Then in 1850 after William B.
Grant's death, Sarah Grant bought back the land for
$400, half being paid by her brother, William B.
Wofford, and witnessed by her son-in-law, Levi Vandiver
and Charles Wofford, her brother, a Justice of the
Peace.

After settling in Cass County, the Mexican War began,
William Grant, along with four of his sons, had
gathered up a Company of men who would serve under him
in Mexico. After reaching Columbus, Georgia, he
returned to North Georgia to enlist more men. But
having some arrangements of necessity, which I feel may
have been to do with the death of his son, James Grant,
who died July 10, 1847 in Mexican War, and was unable
to leave when the Battalion took up the line of march
for Mexico.

After finishing his business, he returned to Columbus,
Georgia in very feeble health and died a few days
later, October 9, 1847, at the home of his friend, Mr.
Sartwell. He was buried with Military Honors by the
"City Light Guards". The service was held at the
Linwood Baptist Church and we are led to believe that
he was buried at the Linwood Cemetery, there are 1000
unmarked graves there. His death notice can be found
in the "Columbus, Georgia Weekly Enquirer" October 12,
1847.

After William's death, Sarah Grant received a pension
from William's Mexican War service till the beginning
of the Civil War, at which time she was cut off from
her pension till the end of the Civil War, at which
time she then was able to pick up her pension once
again. Sarah's father, Nathaniel, had participated in a
war against the Cherokees in 1794 and the War of 1812
against the British. Her grandfather, William, was a
Revolutionary Soldier.

Sarah Wofford Grant was quite a woman, as she raised a
large family mostly by her self. Sarah went through
the mist of the Civil War with her home being in the
path of Sherman's destruction, and received cannonball
damage to one side of her home. She had five sons in
the Confederate Army, who were once captured, and
released to go on fighting till the close of the war.
All survived the War, with Andrew J. Grant, her
youngest son, loosing an arm at the should from a
cannonball, at Missionary Ridge.

Sarah Grant's will was made August 23, 1880 and
recorded in Gordon County, Georgia. Sarah died May 2,
1882 and is buried on the Old Grant Farm located on
lots 295 and 296 southeast of Ranger, Georgia, near
Fairmount, Georgia on the East Damacus Church Road, on
the hill behind her home. Her son Andrew Jackson
"Jack" Grant is buried beside her. Her mother, Lydia
Ann Wofford, who died in 1862 was the first person
buried in this family cemetery.

Info from descends stated that when Lydia Wofford died
Sarah Grant had a grave dug for her mother on the old
Grant Farm and word was sent out about Lydia's death
and an argument ensued as to where she would be buried.
The Wofford children wanted her to be buried in the
Wofford Cemetery in Bartow Co. Ga. So we are not sure
who won out. There are Tombstones for Nathaniel Wofford
and Lydia Wofford in the Wofford Cemetery but we are
fairly sure that Nathaniel's is only a monument as he
died in Arkansas in 1847 where he had an Indian wife
and four more children by her in Ark. located in what
is now Oklahoma. It could be Lydia's Tombstone is a
monument also. There was a sunken place like a grave in
the Old Grant Cemetery when we were there in 1987.

Marriage Notes for LYDIA GRANT and MARMADUKE SWANN:
Marmaduke S. Swann, our ancestor, was son of William
Burdine Swann and Mary Ann Kelly. He was born March 9,
1832 in Rhea County, Tennessee. He moved to Georgia
with his family when he was about four years old. The
family lived in Murray County, Gordon County, Pickens
County and later at the farm at Talking Rock Creek
where Swann Bridge is located. Marmaduke married in
Cass County, Georgia in 1851 to Lydia Ann Grant, the
daughter of William B. Grant and Sarah Wofford. Lydia
was born in DeKalb County, Georgia, October 18, 1825.

It is believed that Marmaduke and Lydia Ann lived in
Pickens or Gordon County some of the time after they
were married, since three small children and a grown
son are buried there at the Lyle Cemetery. The couple
moved to Gilmer County where he is listed as a miller
and a millwright. He was also a bridge builder (I have
copy of the blue prints of bridge he built).

The records show that Marmaduke served in the Civil
War. On June 11, 1861, he was a 3rd Sgt., on December
9, 1861 he was transferred to Co. H. and was wounded at
Manassa, Virginia on August 30, 1862. In 1864 he was
appointed 2nd Sgt. His Pension Records show that he
was detailed in a machine shop in Atlanta and he was at
Kingston, GA, May 12, 1865, when the War ended.

Marmaduke was a member of the Christian Church for more
than fifty years. He helped build River Hill Church in
Gilmer County, near his home. He operated a grish mill
and lumber mill. He had cataract eye surgery in
Atlanta at the age of forty and soon after lost his
sight.

Lydia Ann died March 25, 1892 and she is buried at
Ebenezer Baptist Church on Cartecay Road. Their oldest
daughter, Mary Elizabeth Swann, who married Jedire
Anderson, was my great grandmother.

After Lydia's death, Marmaduke married Alice Bradley
and after her death, he married the third time Edith
Grizzle. Marmaduke Swann died at Roy in Gilmer County,
December 20, 1910 and is buried beside Lydia Ann at
Ebenezer.
