This letter from James H.B. Shackleford in Gordon county to David Marion Phillips in Monroe county.
How are James and David connected? What was Elisabeth Shackleford's maiden name?
Any help appreciated harrishill@starband.net

Calhoun, Ga June 13th 1855.

Dear Cousin David

I now redeem my promise of writing to you. I have been so busy harvest(ing) since I came home that
I have had no opportunity of writing until now. Well, I got home safe and found all well. ____-day
went __ the county and found that everything had put on a new face during my absence. The wheat
had ripened, the oats were green and growing and will make an average crop, the corn very promising
indeed, every thing ___ and cheering. The wheat will be an uncommonly heavy crop and so will the
corn if no diaster befals (befalls) it. Yesterday, the Dem. Con for the 5 Con(congressional?) dist.
met here and after spending the whole day & part of the night in balloting, to the number of 45 times,
were obliged to drop all the aspirants and pick J.H. Lumpkin, an outsider for a compromise and a candidate.
The relations are all well. We hope to see you with us before a great while. Give my love to cousin and
the children. Tell Gilpin howdy and ___ __ (for me to seek his soul's salvation!

Yours affectionately,

J.H.B. Shackelford
