Herman Thomas Glaze, was born March 5, 1912 at
Walton County, Georgia, the eldest son of James
David Glaze and his wife, Violet Ramsden Glaze.
Herman grew up in the Walnut Grove/Loganville area,
and as a child attended church at the Salem
Methodist Church and later, Mountain View Baptist
Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia.. Mr. Glaze took
on family responsibilities early in life due to the
death of his father James David Glaze, in an
explosion at the Stone Mountain rock quarry in
February, 1928, where Herman also worked as a water
boy. Mr. Glaze was an industrious man who often held
several jobs at once. During the 1930's he worked
for the Works Project Administration (WPA). Herman
retired in 1975 after 36 years as a school bus
driver for Dekalb County Schools, during which time
he also drove his own children and grand children to
school. When he first began driving, he owned his
own school bus, which he purchased with Dekalb
County School board backing. Mr. Glaze also worked
as a night watchman for Chevron for 13 years, and
was also a Dekalb County Constable in the late
1930's. Mr. Glaze and his wife owned and operated a
grocery store, and mill on Peeler Road in north
Dekalb County for over thirty five years. He was
well known and well liked in the community. Mr.
Glaze had a playful sense of humor which he often
displayed with children, especially his
grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Herman Thomas Glaze is survived by his devoted wife
of over sixty-four years, Lillie Kate Hughes Glaze,
and his siblings Claude Ramsden Glaze, Robert David
Glaze, Linnie Ruth Glaze, Edna Glaze Shiver; and his
six children, James Eugene Glaze, Sr., Beatrice
Evelyn Glaze Coker, Ray Edward Glaze, Kathryn Ann
Glaze Bostic, Ralph Herbert Glaze, and Martha Nell
Glaze Buice. Mr. Glaze had 16 grandchildren, and 21
great grand children. He was preceded in death by
his brother Dr. Byram Hugh Glaze. 

OBITUARIES: Herman Glaze, owner of grocery/mill

The funeral for Herman Thomas Glaze of Norcross, a
retired owner of a grocery store and mill, will be
at 4:30 p.m. today at R.T. Patterson Funeral Home,
Norcross Chapel, with burial in Winters Chapel
United Methodist Church cemetery.

Mr. Glaze, 84, died Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital
of Atlanta.

Raised in Walton County, Mr. Glaze went to work at
an early age after his father was killed in a rock
quarry explosion at Stone Mountain.

Mr. Glaze held a variety of jobs over the years. For
36 years, he and his wife ran Glaze's Grocery, a
combination grocery store and mill on Winters Chapel
Road. "They sold the cornmeal that they ground there
as well as meats and other items," said his
daughter, Beatrice Evelyn Glaze Coker. Mr. Glaze
drove a DeKalb County school bus part time for 36
years.

Surviving in addition to his daughter are his wife,
Lillie Kate Hughes Glaze; five children, James
Eugene Glaze Sr., Ray Edward Glaze, Ralph Herbert
Glaze all of Doraville, Kathryn Ann Glaze Bostic of
Forest Park, and Martha Nell Glaze Buice of
Norcross; four siblings, Claude Ramsden Glaze of
Stone Mountain, Robert David Glaze of Carnesville,
and Linnie Ruth Glaze and Edna Glaze Shiver of
Covington; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-
grandchildren.
