Robert Rufus Smith was born 15 April 1838 in Wilcox Co., Alabama. His father, 
Set Smith died in the Alabama Creek Indian uprising. Soon his mother, the "Widow Nancy 
Rackard/Rackly" died leaving him orphaned in 1850. At the young age of 12, Rab left on 
foot from Wilcox Co. walking to Calhoun County, Florida. He eventually was befriended by 
Halcomb Hagan and married his eldest daughter, Sarah Louisa (b. 29 Dec 1837) in Calhoun 
County 5 Sept 1866. Sarah and Rab later settled in Auburndale, Fl where they both died at 
the home of their only living daughter, Mary Dove (Smith) Norman, wife of Miles Daniel 
(Mac) Norman.
