Barajas Eualia 040522 p4
Sycamore Crash Kills 2: Eualia Barajas; An auto collision just east of Patterson left two people dead and 10 people
injured late Thursday afternoon, when a GMC van smashed into a Honda Civic at Fig and Sycamore avenues. Eualia
Barajas, 46, of Los Angeles, died at the scene when the van in which she was a passenger rolled over and pinned her to
the ground, according to California Highway Patrol reports. Fifteen year old Efrain Duran of Gustine, a passenger in the
Honda who was not wearing a seatbelt, died later at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, CHP officials said. The
accident occurred after the Civic failed to stop at a stop sign, according to the report. "I don t know what happened; they
just collided, 17 year old eyewitness Cruz Lopez said. "1 just saw the people inside the car and van had blood all over
their faces. I just heard the big crash. At first, I thought it was my imagination. Thursday s crash occurred at about 4:45
p.m., when the 1999 silver Honda Civic, driven by 21 year old Gustine resident Omar Duran, headed westbound on Fig
Avenue without halting at a posted stop sign, CHP authorities said. A 2001 white GMC van, driven by 47 year old
Patterson resident Hector Arciniega, was headed northbound on Sycamore Avenue when it broadsided the other car; CHP
reports stated. CHP officers say they do not know how fast either vehicle was traveling. They do not believe that drugs
or alcohol played a role in the accident. Ambar Huerta said she was sitting in front of her friend Lopez house at the time
of the accident "I heard the tires squeak and people screaming," the Patterson High School junior said. Sycamore
Avenue resident Dean Emehiser, who lives near the intersection; was in his house at the time of the wreck. "I heard a
loud boom.," he said. Division Chief Steve Hall of the Patterson Fire Department said he was dispatched around 4:47
p.m. "Then it was redispatched as a rescue with multiple victims," he said. Ten people received treatment for minor to
moderate injuries after the incident. Omar Duran was treated for moderate injuries at Emanuel Medical Center in
Turlock, and his passenger, Jose Alvarez, 16, of Newman, received treatment for minor injuries at Memorial Medical
Center in Modesto. Van driver Hector Arciniega was treated for minor injuries at Memorial Medical Center, and Maria
Arciniega, 39,received treatment for moderate injuries at Doctors Medical Center, and Maria Arciniega 39, received
treatment for moderate injuries at Emanuel. Thirty one year old van passenger Evarista Barajas of Lynwood, the only
van passenger reported not wearing a seatbelt, was treated for moderated injuries at Doctors Medical Center. Other van
passengers treated for minor injuries include Carmina Gonzalez, 46, of Patterson and the following Los Angeles
residents: Tania Rodarte, 19; Cecilio Rodarte, 19; Efrain Rodarte, 47 and Laura Barajas, 32. Both the car and the van
landed in a field northwest of the intersection near Lopez Sycamore Avenue home. The GMC lay toppled on its side,
and Patterson firefighters had to use logs and yellow wooden blocks to hoist it and release passengers. Meanwhile, the
silver Civic stood smashed about a dozen yards to the west, with the driver s side of the car folded and crumpled like a
piece of aluminum foil. California Highway Patrol Officer John Martinez said Sycamore Avenue is a busy thoroughfare,
where several fatalities have occurred in recent years. "People run the stop sign," he said, "It has been a very common
occurrence out there on Sycamore. It is a county road, and sometimes people tend to relax out on the country roads and
not pay attention to the posted signs. "Patterson residents know about this; it isn t the first story they are going to hear
about on Sycamore."

Sycamore Crash Kills 2: Efrain Duran; An auto collision just east of Patterson left two people dead and 10 people
injured late Thursday afternoon, when a GMC van smashed into a Honda Civic at Fig and Sycamore avenues.
"Patterson residents know about this; it isn t the first story they are going to hear
about on Sycamore."

who shared the workload. According to his family, he was always more than willing to give credit for that
accomplishment to others. In response to his years of service to the church, the congregation named the social hall in his
honor at the church's 85th anniversary in 1996. Mr. Johnson is survived by his sons, Rodney M. Johnson of Patterson

Lee Gye Y 040602 p5
Woman Killed in Five-Car Crash: Gye Young Lee; CHP closes 1-5 for two hours; A five-car collision on Interstate 5
north of Westley killed one woman on the Memorial Day holiday and led to nine injuries. Gye Young Lee, 27, of San
Francisco, was killed Monday after her car crossed the center divider and crashed into two oncoming sport utility
vehicles, according to a California Highway Patrol report. The CHP closed the highway for two hours as a result of the
accident, causing traffic on the highway to back up for several hours. "It s very unusual for someone to cross over (the
center divider) ever since they put in rumble strips over there," said CHP officer Alexander Coussirat, who took the
report on the accident. We don t know if ( Lee ) fell asleep or what happened. Lee s passenger, 30 year old Jin Wou Kim
of Los Angeles, was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, where he was treated for major injuries. Nine other
people received minor to moderate injuries from the accident, according to a CHP report. Lee was driving a 2001 Toyota
Camry southbound on Interstate 5 around 5:30 p.m. when her car crossed the center divider just into the northbound lane
just north of the Ingram Creek exit for an unknown reason, according to the report. The Camry crashed into a 2001 Ford
Expedition driven by 50 year old Hayward resident Nimfa Coleman and then hit a 1998 Ford Expedition driven by 36
year old Hayward resident Jose Chavez. After the Camry struck the first SUV and before it hit the second, a 2002 Suburu
WRX heading northbound swerved off the roadway and came to rest on the eastern embankment, according to the report.
Then, a 1997 Toyota Corolla driven by Sparks, Nev, resident Edina Jambor collided with the 1998 Expedition after the
Expedition was struck by the Camry. The accident led the CHP to close northbound lanes near the Ingram Creek Road
exit between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Traffic was redirected to take eastbound Howard Avenue to Highway 33 and then to
take eastbound Highway 132 to northbound Interstate 5. A manager at the Arco AM/PM store on Rogers Road said
traffic was backed up beyond the Sperry Avenue exit. Martha Arevlo, who works at the Union 76 station on Rogers
Road, said she was traveling home from Los Angeles Monday evening and she noticed traffic back up as far south as
Gustine. She said she and her fellow travelers decided to get off at the Crows Landing exit rather than the usual
Patterson exit. Details of what caused the Camry to cross into the northbound lane were still under investigation as of
Tuesday. In addition to Lee s major wounds, five of the seven passengers in Coleman s vehicle were treated for minor to
moderate injuries, and Coleman was treated for minor injuries at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock. Chavez was
treated for minor injuries at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto and two of Jambor s passengers were treated for minor
to moderate injuries. Everyone was wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, and it does not appear alcohol played
any role, Coussirat said.

Neuman Ruben 040714 p4
Ruben Neuman; Local Police on Lookout after Shooting Officers Suspect Saturday s Attack in Newman Is Gang Related
Patterson police are keeping an eye out for gang activities in the wake of a fatal gang related shooting in Newman on
Saturday. Newman resident Ruben "Joey" Neuman, 21, died in an ambulance shortly after a drive-by shooting at 10:44
p.m. Newman Police Department officials said police are on the lookout for a dark color sport utility vehicle and a gray
pick-up that may have been involved. Reports say four men got out of the vehicles and beat Neuman, then one of then
pulled out a gun and fired. "We re following up on all information we re receiving," Newman Lt. Edward Katen said
Tuesday. "We re receiving a lot of calls, and we re not discounting anything. We re following up on every lead, every
tip, everything". Katen said the method of the attack and the fact that Neuman was a documented gang member enabled
police to conclude the murder was gang-related. Katen also said the victim was wearing red. Patterson Police Services
Detective Frank Navarro said red is the color normally associated with the Norteno street gang. He said a recent flurry of
shootings in Modesto coupled with sporadic activity on the West Side have caused local police to step up patrols in gang
hot spots. Nortenos frequent blocks south of E Street between Highway 33 and Ward Avenue and neighborhoods
between East Las Palmas and Walnut avenues, Navarro said. He said there also is another Norteno faction that fans out
in Newman, Patterson, Westley and Vernalis. "And we have some of the southerners, Surenos, that hang out in the area
of Felipe Garza Park," he said. The last Patterson shooting was reportedly a drive-by that occurred three or four years ago
on North Hartley Street. The Newman police dispatch states that Saturday s alteration took place at Kern and P streets in
Newman. The intersection stands just a block west of the Newman police station. Officers said they found Neuman
lying in the street. The Stanislaus County Sheriff s Department is leading the investigation, assisted by Newman police.

Ramirez Francisco 041229 p8
Man Killed In I—5 Crash: Francisco Ramirez (see Obit: 050122 p8); One man was killed and five people were injured
early Christmas morning in a three-car collision on Interstate 5 about three miles north of the Patterson exit. It was very
dense fog when I pulled up said Patterson Fire Department Division Chief Jeff Gregory. "There were car parts all over
both lanes." The age and identity of the man killed is unknown, according to the Stanislaus County Coroner Office. A
report from the California Highway Patrol said he was going the wrong way in the left northbound lane in a 1989 Ford
Ranger shortly after 4 a.m. The CHP report also said that Jaie Kwak, 26, of Los Angeles, was heading north in the same
lane in a 2005 Subaru Outback when she noticed the Ranger heading straight toward her. Kwak turned to the right in an
effort to avoid a collision, according to the report, but the Ranger rammed her left front end. Kwak was going about 65
mph, officers said, and Aziza Sidiqi, 88, of Pomona was also headed north in a 1996 Mazda MPV in the lane just to her
right. Kwak's car pushed Ranger into the Mazda, and the Ranger spun in a southwesterly direction and ended up on the
center median. Meanwhile, the Subaru Spun in a northeasterly direction and came to a stop on the right asphalt shoulder,
while Sidiqi s car came to rest in the left lane on Interstate 5 north, the report says. Officers said the driver of the Ranger
was stuck inside the vehicle, which caught fire. The pickup was fully engulfed as emergency personnel arrived. The man
was pronounced dead on the scene. Gregory said emergency personnel had someone in the car with Kwak as they fought
to free her. "We were just trying to get her out the right way without causing anymore injury" he said. Kwak and her
passenger, Aaron Artino, 26, of Redondo Beach, were transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with major
injuries. Sidiqi and two of his passengers, Nadir Sidiqi, 40, and Mohamed Sidiqi, 78, were taken to Sutter Tracy
Community Hospital in Tracy for minor and moderate injuries. Me don t know what caused him to get on the wrong
way, and we don t know where he got on the wrong way CHP spokesman Tom Killian said. "it s all being investigated."

Tapia Edward 040828 p4
Drug—related Items Found after Fatal Crash; Vernalis — Drugs may have played a role in a fatal traffic collision on
Highway 132 near McCracken Road on Thursday according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP officers found a
container with drug paraphernalia and a suspicious white powder on the floorboard of Mark Edward Tapia s Honda. CHP
spokesman Tom Killian said. "His sobriety is unknown until we get a toxicology report back," he said. Still, the 35 year
old Modesto man probably never knew what hit him when his 1981 Honda Accord slammed into a big rig just after 9
a.m., Killian said. Hector Ornelas of the West Stanislaus County Fire Protection District said firefighters used the Jaws
of Life in an attempt to cut the man out of his car, but he had died before they could get him out. Killian said the man
was headed west on Highway 132, and the big rig, a 1995 Freightliner driven by Layton resident Tom Hernandez was
going east. Hernandez was not injured. "He s driving defensively," Killian said of the 38 year old truck driver. "He sees
the guy coming out in his lane. He s alert. He veers out to the right to avoid an accident, but the victim's car hits the left
rear axle on the trailer." The accident spread debris along the roadway for about a quarter mile. Killian said Highway
132 was closed between River and McCracken roads from 9:20 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, with detours set up by
California Department of Transportation workers. A Doctors Medical Center medical helicopter arrived, but it was not
used. Thursday s accident is the second fatality on Highway 132 this year, which Killian described as about average.
