Thank you for your interest in transcribing for the Pension Project. There is nothing that you need to buy and no other place that you need to go to. You can do a pension transcription from certain States on-line (in your pj's if you'd like). Only one rule applies: It must be completed in a plain text format, with no tabs used, only the spacebar. This is because your file will go up on the net as an text file and text files do not recognize tabs, only spaces. "NotePad" that comes with your Windows platform is great for this, so you don't need to purchase any special program. RECORDS AVAILABLE FOR TRANSCRIPTION ON-LINE: FLORIDA: Confederate Pension Application Files are available through the Florida Department of State-Division of Library & Information Services Bureau of Archives & Records Management. http://www.floridamemory.com/Collections/PensionFiles/ The files are scanned images in PDF format, so you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader which is a free program that can be downloaded here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html The images can be easily located through their site Search Engine located on the same Florida page as mentioned above. GEORGIA: Civil War Pension Applications are available through Georgia State University for select Counties. http://docuweb.gsu.edu/scripts/webmain.dll?Anonymous The files are scanned images in PDF format, so you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader which is a free program that can be downloaded here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html The images can be easily located through their site Search Engine located on the same Georgia page as mentioned above. You need to go to the Searchable Database located here: http://ajax.lva.lib.va.us/F/?func=file&file_name=find-b-clas10&local_base=CLAS10 2. Conduct a search on the name that you are interested in. 3. When you find the name that you want in the search results, click on the name and a Catalog Card page or listing will show up with more details. 4. There is a small box just to the right of the number that you must click on when you find the name of the person. Click on this box and then select “View Selected” directly under the header “Confederate Pensions”. 5. A Full View of Record page will then appear. At the top of the grey area, it will show “URL(Click on link)” and the link will be shown to the right. 6. When you click on the URL, a pop-up page will then appear that says “Click Here”. Click on it and another page will appear that shows how many pages this person has in scanned documents. It must also be noted that you must have a TIFF viewer to see the documents. Scroll to the bottom of this page and click on “Tiff Tips”. This viewer is a small program that works in the background of your Windows program. Go ahead and download it from where it says “Shareware Downloads”. 7. Now all that you have to do is click on any of the page numbers and the scanned images of the pension will appear for you to transcribe. You can get a template for the Widow's Application here. It is not complete but you can add to it.: http://www.usgwarchives.net/pensions/civilwar/va/template.txt Because there were so many different forms made available to the Veterans for their Pensions Application, a template has not been provided. Again thank you for contacting us and we look forward to receiving your transcription soon.
