Genevieve Bell spent nine months at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) collecting the data found in the BIA student files of Record Group 75 (NARG75) in preparation for her doctoral dissertation on the Carlisle School for her fellowship to Stanford University. She has also interviewed students and their families.
Barbara Landis is the Carlisle Indian School Research Specialist for the Cumberland County Historical Society (CCHS) in Carlisle, PA. Since 1989, she has been answering the research inquiries to the CCHS based on information found in the student newspapers, photo archives, census records and monograph collection of that institution.
The indices for the CCHS collection are not complete, nor are there student files for every enrolled student in the NARA holdings. It is estimated that 10-12,000 students were enrolled at Carlisle during the life of the school. The NARG75 files contain relevant genealogical information, including parents' names (where available), geographical origin, blood quantum, date of enrollment, date of discharge, physician's reports, Outing reports, previous schooling, grades completed and graduation information, subsequent employment, correspondence between home and school, photographs, and other miscellaneous information.
The CCHS collection typically includes any articles about the students appearing in the 39 years' school newspaper collections, photographs, census records for 1900 and 1910, student exhibit work, school programs and graduation exercises, biographies, and correspondence, including contemporary data from the descendants of these students.
Additional listings will be posted as they are compiled.
