Veteran's Memorial


Although the town of Freeport was planned by William and David Todd in 1796, there are notes that one Miss FAITS, who drowned in Buffalo Creek in 1794, was the first burial in what became Freeport's burial grounds. The old cemetery was called the ancient Freeport Cemetery in various articles, when Robert McKee, Editor of the Freeport Journal, published a list of tombstones still standing in 1903, in the lot on Fourth Street near the Presbyterian Church. A new graveyard was established in 1865 on a hill overlooking the town, located in South Buffalo Township. But by 1903 the remains of those in the old cemetery were being removed to the new Freeport Cemetery.

McCall, Gracie, Dau of TJ & L McCall. Section K, plot 89. Gracie McCall does not show up on any census record with the family of Thomas J. McCall and his wife Lida. On the 1900 and 1910 census, LIda tells that she had 5 children, but only 4 of them were living. Gracie is probably the fifth child. By 1859 he had moved to Freeport, where he joined the locally raised 78th Regiment during the Civil War as a surgeon. His name also appears on the Torbett-McCulloch-Cook monument close to his grave. Elizabeth may be the wife of David Clawson, who is buried within this plot, and who died at a fairly young age of 41. She appears with him in the 1850 census of South Buffalo Township, along with 3 children, Albert, Sarah and Naomi. In 1860 the family, minus husband David, is living in the town of Freeport. By 1870 she cannot be found under the name Clawson, but there is a John Miller, of Harrison Twp, Allegheny County, with wife Elizabeth. The ages match adequately with the dates of these tombstones. Although the dates are not very clear, June 30, 1862 is the day of the battle of Glendale, Virginia, near Richmond. From June 25th to July 1st, the Seven Days Battle raged. If Thomas died on June 30th, he fell in the fields of Frazier's farm and may be buried as an unknown in the National Cemetery at Glendale. (contributed by Diane Nichols)

All children listed as being born before 1837 are still on the 1850 census of Freeport. William's parents are listed as Jeremiah Murphy and Mary Scott, both born in the year 1780. Mary may be the listing found in the ancient Freeport Cemetery as Mrs. Jerry Murphy, who died in 1849, therefore this may be Jeremiah Murphy or an unknown child of William. Nulton, Daniel, (view 2), Section C, plot 1. Daniel Nulton was the husband of Laura A. Galbraith, born in May of 1853. The couple lived in Kittanning PA. Daniel died sometime after 1910 and was interred in the Kittanning Cemetery. Family researchers state that his remains were moved to the Freeport Cemetery on October 25, 1921.
