Cemetery Sign

Veteran's Memorial

Although the town of Freeport was planned by William and David Todd in 1796, there are notes that one Miss FAITS, who drowned in Buffalo Creek in 1794, was the first burial in what became Freeport's burial grounds. The old cemetery was called the ancient Freeport Cemetery in various articles, when Robert McKee, Editor of the Freeport Journal, published a list of tombstones still standing in 1903, in the lot on Fourth Street near the Presbyterian Church. A new graveyard was established in 1865 on a hill overlooking the town, located in South Buffalo Township. But by 1903 the remains of those in the old cemetery were being removed to the new Freeport Cemetery.

A list of names of those headstones still in existence in 1903 at the old cemetery in on the A-B cemetery page.

Thanks to Margie Erickson, a listing of tombstone inscriptions for Freeport cemetery is now available at the Freeport Library. The listing also contains details from cemetery records, and the location of the stones. Included are maps of the cemetery and sections with lots delineated and numbered. A newspaper article in the Pittsburgh Gazette on September 1, 1870 tells of Louis [Gearing] and an unnamed brother being killed in the Freeport Cemetery, along with a sexton, when they were hit by lightning as they picked out a grave for another unnamed brother who had just died. The tombstone inscription makes it clear that Gust was the other brother killed by lightning. A son of Louis had also just died the day before, of typhoid fever, making 4 deaths that week within the same household. Gust [Augustus] can be found in the 1860 census of Brady's Bend, one of 5 brothers and 1 sister living with their father, Henry. (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Cemetery records also indicate that Louis Goehring had died the same day, August 29, 1870, although no cause of death has been discovered and no stone marks his grave within the same plot. Louis' oldest son also died that same week of typhoid fever. The name is indexed as Geohring in the record book at the Freeport Library. (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Iseman, unknown 2, 2. Section F, plot 62. A worn illegible stone within the Iseman family plot. John and Elizabeth Iseman had several children listed in the 1850 census, Henry, Nicholas, John, Mary, Simon, James, George and Elizabeth. Of these, Henry, Nicholas, Mary and Elizabeth have not been traced to their deaths by researchers, leaving speculation that any of these may be interred under this old stone. It appears to be a name with many letters, with Nicholas and Elizabeth being the most likely. Nicholas was born in 1829 and Elizabeth was born in 1846. (contributed by Diane Nichols)
