Looking for marriage records for individuals that lived in Bryan County? Check surrounding counties Atoka, Choctaw, Marshall, Johnston, Oklahoma and Grayson County, Texas. Index to Marriage records for Marshall County 1907-1919, is available online! My ancestors that lived in Cartwright, (Bryan Co.) caught the train to Madill, OK (Marshall County) to get married.

After the Rev. War new laws were passed regulating marriages, requiring that a an ordained minister, justice of the peace or other judicial official perform the ceremony. However, in the push westward the ability to comply with the laws was difficult. Weddings were often held in the home of the bride with the justice of the peace or the presiding probate judge officiating. Therefore, searching for marriage records prior to statehood (1907) is not an easy task. Oklahomas was a territory for 17 years. May 2 1890 to Nov 16, 1907. One available resource prior to statehood is the Chickasaw Nation Marriage Records Books A and B- which are on microfilm at the courthouse in Ardmore, Oklahoma (Carter Co.) some marriages dating back to 1894. Records are available, be creative and open minded in searching for early marriage records. Some books available: Bryan County Pre-Statehood Marriages 7/1902-11/1907, 1995, 216pp; Bryan County, OK, Pre-statehood Marriages July 1902 thru November 1907; MARRIAGES OF THE CHOCTAW NATION 1890 - 1902 Total of 11 books, all soft bound with index.

Marriage Records

The Bryan County Court house in Oklahoma has given over 8000 original marriage licenses to the Bryan County Heritage, Research Library in Calera, Oklahoma. The licenses are from 1902 to 1932. Please remember one thing, many of the individuals lived in Texas. Some were from other states as well. There was no waiting period to be married in Oklahoma. If you are a descendant or family member of one of the individuals listed on the marriage licenses, please send your request , using the Groom's name along with a Stamped Self Addressed Envelope to the Bryan County Heritage Assoc., P. O. Box 153, Calera, OK 74730. You will then be notified as to how to obtain the Original License. Please do not write and request all of any particular name, you will not be able to obtain them in that manner. Please be specific. Please be sure to request a specific name beginning with the grooms name. They are filed by the grooms name at this time.

These are not all of the marriages in Oklahoma from 1902 to 1932.  They are licenses which were not picked up by the Bride and Groom, that were given to BCHL by the County Clerk's office.
