Broad Ax Newspaper

The USGenWeb Project

This is one of only a handful of African-American newspapers published in Utah. Its publisher, Julius Taylor, was a liberal and a Democrat who supported the Free Silver wing of the party and tried to convert African-Americans from the Republican Party. In 1901, he closed the Broad Ax in Salt Lake City and moved the paper to Chicago, where it continued into the 1920's.
