TITLE: Jesse C. Seigler SOURCE: Anderson Intelligencer SUBMITTED: Bill and Rebecca FORMATTED: Kim Grissom, *********************************************************************************************** Jesse C. Seigler was the son of Joseph Ebenezer and Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Jones Seigler. Anderson Intelligencer 6/20/1894 “Holland’s Store” Mr. Jesse Seigler, a young man about 17 years old, son of Mr. J. E. Seigler, drowned in the Savannah River, at McDaniel Shoals, last Saturday afternoon at 5:00 o’clock. He, in company with his two cousins, Reuben and Jones McGee, and Lucius Todd, (Reuben and Jones were sons of Franklin and Mattie Jones McGee. Mattie and Sallie Jones Seigler were sisters. Lucius Todd was married to a sister of Reuben and Jones. RRA) were seining in the shoals, and a swim was proposed, which resulted badly. His comrades did all in their power to save the young man, but all to no effect. The river at this point is exceedingly rapid and deep, rendering the recovery of the body very difficult. The people from the whole surrounding country, both in this state and Georgia, met and raked the river, and it was eleven o’clock Saturday before the body was found some fifty yards below where he was last seen. Mr. Seigler joined the church at Cross Roads about a year ago, and those who knew him say he exemplified the true Christian in his life afterward. Death is always sad, and it comes with double force when it enters the family circles and removes one so young, just entering upon the threshold of life’s responsibilities. It is strange to us that one whose life was so full of promise should be cut off so suddenly; but our Father knows best, and we should always bow humbly to His will. We now look through a glass darkly, but the day is coming when we shall see face to face, and know as we are known. May God comfort the bereaved parents, and bear them up in this sad and sorrowful hour, and teach them to realize that those he loves he chastens. An exceedingly large congregation met at Cross Roads on Monday to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased. Rev. W. M. Pinson conducted the services, taking for his text: “Whatsoever thy hands findeth to do, do with all thy might,” etc., after which the body was consigned to its mother dust, to await the final consummation of all things. *********************************************************************************************** NOTICE: Printing the files within by non-commerical individuals and libraries is encouraged, as long as all notices and submitter information is included.
