Coeur d'Alene Press - The Daily Bee Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho <> John Urwiller, 84 John F. Urwiller, 84, entered into rest Oct. 23, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Harriette, of Coeur d'Alene; nephew Charles Harmon, Denver; niece Virginia Sorenson, Minnesota. John was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Elizabeth Urwiller, brother Clyde Urwiller, and sister Wilma Harmon. John was born in Ravenna, Neb., in 1920, and graduated from Ravenna High School in 1937. In 1941, enlisted in the Air Force and served during World War II in both the South Pacific and Italy as an Aerial War Combat Photographer. John received several medals for conduct and valor. He was discharged from the service in 1944. Soon after, he worked for the Colorado State Patrol and established their first photo lab. In the years to follow, John was on the photojournalist staff of five different newspapers. More importantly, however, John was a special correspondent for the New York Times for 20 years, and on the staff of the Associated Press for 10 years. In 1992, he and his wife moved to Coeur d'Alene, where he "retired," but continued to freelance many local projects. John had 50 years experience as an award-winning photographer, competing in international, world class competitions, and was a life member of the National Press Photographer's Association and the Elks. Interment will take place at Olinger's Mausoleum and Memorial Gardens in Denver. Arrangements are under the guidance of Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home, 1306 N.
