Coeur d'Alene Press - The Daily Bee Coeur d'Alene, Idaho <> Aleen Underwood, 81 Aleen Louise Miller Underwood, 81, a resident of Burley for most of her life, passed away Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, in Salt Lake City. Aleen was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Burley, the daughter of John O. and Anna E. Miller. As a young girl, Aleen's family moved to California, where she graduated from high school in Los Angeles and met her husband, Francis Byron Underwood. Aleen and Francis were married in Los Angeles Jan. 24, 1942. Aleen and Francis had three sons. While Francis was in the Navy, they were stationed in Kansas, where Michael was born in 1943, then Minnesota, where Pat was born in 1945. Following her husband's discharge from the Navy, they moved to Burley and had their third son, Lee, in 1951. Aleen and her husband owned and operated the Grandview Grocery in Burley until they moved in 1964 to Coeur d'Alene, where Aleen helped run the family's drive-in restaurant. After the death of her husband in 1977, Aleen returned to Burley and lived there the remainder of her life. Aleen enjoyed crocheting and was a very talented oil painter. She painted many beautiful pictures for her family and friends. She was very active with the Burley Senior Citizens Center and enjoyed her friends there and loved playing cards with them often. Aleen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and brother Donald Miller. She is survived by her brother, Marvin Miller; her three sons; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Aleen had requested to be cremated and placed beside her husband in Spokane. A celebration of her life will be held in Burley; the date and place will be announced later.
