Coeur d'Alene Press - The Daily Bee Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho <> Frances (Fran) Smart, 88 Frances (Fran) Smart died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, in Post Falls, at the age of 88. She was born Sara Frances Grindstaff on Sept. 27, 1916, in Sylva, N.C. In 1930, she moved to Keene, N.H., where she attended Keene Teachers College, and began her career as an elementary school teacher. Fran married Robert A. Smart in 1940. Life in the Forest Service took them to New Hampshire, Maine, Idaho, Montana, Washington, D.C., and finally, to Colville, Wash., in 1966. Fran loved life and was devoted to her husband and children. She thrived on her involvement in Colville's community activities, such as Mt. Carmel Auxiliary, Athenaeum, Head Start, and Lady Elks. She was often called upon to chair the crafts committees, plan the Auxiliary bazaar, and host the Forest Service socials. Fran filled her home with toys, crafts, games and fresh-baked cookies just for the frequent visitors who knew they would be welcomed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert. Fran is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Jr. and CB of Diamond Springs, Calif.; Richard and Ann, Coeur d'Alene; Stephen and Sandra, Chattaroy, Wash.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Nov. 11 at the United Methodist Church in Colville, Wash. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Carmel Hospital Auxiliary, 982 E.
