Coeur d'Alene Press - The Daily Bee Coeur d'Alene, Idaho <> Charles E. Rohr, 82 Charles E. Rohr, 82, entered into rest July 20, 2004, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Chuck was born and raised in West Seattle, graduating from West Seattle High School in 1938. Out of high school, Dad went to work for Boeing as a welder and married his longtime sweetheart, Mary Luise Afflerbach, in 1942. Shortly thereafter, Chuck enlisted in the Army Air Corps and flew 35 missions over Nazi Germany and Occupied Europe as a B-17 command pilot. Dad led the largest bomber raid in the history of World War II, a 2000-plus aircraft assault on Nazi ball-bearing factories at Schweinfurt, Germany. Dad remained in the service after the war, rising to the rank of full colonel and base commander of Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington, at the time of his retirement in 1974. During his Air Force career, Dad held many flying-related assignments and logged time in aircraft as varied as the B-17, C-47 and B-52. Dad and Mary Luise retired in 1974 to Hayden Lake, where they enjoyed the natural beauty of one of Idaho's most scenic lakes. Chuck is survived by his wife, Mary Luise; daughters Julia McHugh and Susan Pruitt; and his eldest son, Charles Jr. Dad's youngest son, Thomas, preceded him to heaven in 1995. Dad also has six surviving grandchildren ranging in age from 10 to 36. Chuck also leaves behind his brother, Stephen Rohr, and sister Dorothy Benkert, both of West Seattle. At Dad's request, no service will be held. Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d' Alene Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be sent in Dad's name to Hospice of North Idaho or St. George' s Parish, Post Falls.
