Coeur d'Alene Press - The Daily Bee Coeur d'Alene, Idaho <> Herbert "Bert" Rowland, 85 Herbert "Bert" J. Rowland, 85, Post Falls, loving and devoted husband and father, died July 30, 2004, in Post Falls. He was born Feb. 15, 1919, in Portland, Ore., to Hattie J. (Lewis) and Herbert J. Rowland. Bert moved with his family at an early age to New York, where he was raised. At the age of 9, he lost his foot in a railroad accident. But losing his foot never hindered his spirit. He loved working summers on the family farm in Wisconsin. On April 3, 1948, Bert married Jean Jackson in Buffalo, N.Y. They lived in Tonawanda, N.Y., where two of their children were born, Barbara and Marsha. In 1952, they moved to San Diego, where the next two were born, Linda and Jack. Bert was a self-taught draftsman engineer. He worked at Solar Aircraft as a drafting engineer, from which he retired in 1978. He was an expert craftsman. There was nothing he couldn't do. He enjoyed camping and traveling, especially car trips to new York and Wisconsin. He also enjoyed fishing and swimming, but his greatest joy was focusing on his family. Bert enjoyed going to all their games. He sponsored his team "The Grandpa's Gang" softball at Quad Park. We will forever miss those blue eyes. Bert is survived by Jean, his wife of 56 years, at home; children and spouses, Barbara and Benny Gomez, Corcoran, Calif., Marsha and Dave Hamilton, Hayden Lake, Linda and Mike Ursillo, Jack and Ellen Rowland, all of Post Falls; grandchildren Brandon Gomez, Jamee Cook, Paige Ursillo, Nicholas Ursillo, Brian, Blake and Bradley Hamilton, Matthew, Johnny and Caroline Rowland; great-grandchildren Taylor Gomez, Corey Cook, Carsen and Cameron Ursillo.
