Priest River Times Priest River, Idaho Frank Sam Maio, 77 Frank Sam Maio, 77, a life long resident of Priest River, passed away at his home, on Sept. 23, 2004. He was born in Priest River, Idaho on July 29, 1927, the son of Frances Mary ( Veltri) and Charles Maio. Frank was raised in Priest River. He attended the Idaho State School for the Deaf in Gooding, Idaho, where he graduated from high school. After returning home, he began a long career with Diamond International, which later became DAW Forest Products. After working 42 years, Frank retired in 1989 as a certified lumber grader. On June 8, 1957, he married June Faye Leaf in Spokane. He enjoyed woodworking in his shop, hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time with his family. He also loved most sports, especially football, and playing Pinochle. Frank was a member of the Idaho Association of the Deaf and was very active in the deaf community and culture. Survivors include his wife, June, at their home; one son, Rick Maio of Newport; two daughters, Dianne Maio of Priest River and Karla Maio of Juneau, Alaska; five grandchildren, Chris Palmer, Shawn, Dusty, josh and Levi Maio, one great grandson, Devyn Palmer; two sisters, Rose Rosa, and Elaine Darrow, both of Spokane; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Donna Stanek of Spokane. His parents preceded him in death. All services will be held on Oct. 1 in Priest River, starting with a graveside-inurnment at 1:30, at the Evergreen Cemetery, Priest River. Directly following, at 2 p.m., a memorial service will be at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, also in Priest River. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
