Feely, 77, Tacoma, Washington., died Sunday, July 4, 2004, due to complications from a stroke he suffered late last year. John was born May 10, 1927, in Rathdrum, and grew up on a cattle and wheat ranch his father operated on the Rathdrum Prairie. John graduated from Rathdrum High School in 1945. Thereafter, he served briefly in the Air Force. After he left the service, John worked on survey crews throughout the western United States during the 1940s and '50s, principally in Idaho, Utah and California. In 1956, he graduated from University of Idaho, earning a bachelor's degree in business administration. In 1958, John married Helen Dudley, whom he had met at University of Idaho. They were married at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d'Alene. John and Helen moved in 1959 to Portland, where he continued performing land surveying and engineering work. Eventually, he became interested in the growing field of computers and spent time in night school to prepare for a job in that field. In 1968, John moved his family to Tacoma and went to work for Weyerhaeuser' s payroll department. He retired from the company in 1982 and spent the following years involved in community activist activities. John is survived b his wife Helen of Tacoma; son Chris and wife Yvonne Feely and grandson Collin, all of Sumner, Wash.; and brother Tom Feely, Coeur d'Alene. Funeral service was held July 8 at the Sumner First United Methodist Church. John was interred at the Tahoma National Cemetery.
