Coeur d'Alene Press - The Daily Bee Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho <> Hazel Bjerkestrand, 103 Hazel Bernice Bjerkestrand, 103, Coeur d'Alene, died Nov. 7, 2004, at Bee Hive Homes. She was born June 24, 1901, in Radcliffe, Iowa, to Albert and Julia (Rorem) Amundson. Hazel graduated from Radcliffe High School and attended Iowa State College and Ellsworth College in Iowa. She worked briefly as a teacher in Iowa, before traveling to India under the auspices of the Lutheran Santal Mission Society. Hazel married Ole Bjerkestrand on Dec. 30, 1925, in Assam, India. For 33 years, she and her husband worked among the Santal people in Bihar Province and Assam in northeast India. After returning from mission service in 1958, Hazel and Ole served congregations in Gardner, Sandwich and Peoria, Ill., and Trinity Lutheran Church in Coeur d'Alene. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Ole, and three sisters and two brothers. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Albert and Bonnie Bjerkestrand of Spokane, David and Lois Bjerkestrand, Coeur d'Alene, Joel and Sue Bjerkestrand, Phoenix; grandchildren Joy Allison and husband Tim, Lowell Bjerkestrand and wife Lynn, Wray Bjerkestrand and wife Merrily, Mark Bjerkestrand and wife Heidi, Kari Kearney and husband John, and Derek Bjerkestrand; great-grandchildren Kelli, Joel, Megan, Kurt, Joshua, Jared, Allison, Haley, Eric, Hanna, Luke and Luke Allen. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Nov. 20 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 812 N. Fifth St., Coeur d'Alene, with Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene in charge of arrangements. Burial will be at Radcliffe Cemetery in Iowa.
