Coeur d'Alene Press - The Daily Bee Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho <> Submitted by: Kristy Taylor [muddypaw@onemain.com] Lucille Edna Jackson Applegate (1917-2004) Lucille Edna Applegate, Coeur d'Alene, died Oct. 2, 2004, at Kootenai Medical Center, after a short illness, at the age of 86. Lucille was born Nov. 13, 1917, in Apache, Okla., to Clarence Bently and Nona Clyde (Haun) Jackson. She lived in Oklahoma until the age of 5. With her family, she moved to Nampa. Lucille was a member of the girls basketball team during her high school years, graduating in 1938. After high school graduation, she moved to San Diego, where she was a nanny. While in California, Lucille married Ray O. Applegate on May 22, 1939. During the mid-40s, she and Ray owned racehorses and traveled all over the United States with their horses. In the late '40s, Ray's mother became ill, so they sold the horses and moved to Oregon to care for Ray's mother until her death. They then moved in 1946 to Burns, Ore., where she was a homemaker and raised her sons. Lucille became a certified lifeguard so her sons and other friends' children could go swimming. It was nothing for her to take over a kid-full Jeep to Heinz swimming pool for the day. Lucille believed that all children should know how to swim. When at the beach, if she realized a small child couldn't swim, she'd ask the parents if she could teach them. Never did anyone turn her down. She taught many children to swim. During the time in Burns when her sons were young, Lucille was a Cub Scout leader. Her home was always open to any of her son's friends. There was also a good meal to go with the visit. Ray never knew, when he arrived home at night, who or how many kids would be spending the night with them. Family, friends and strangers were always welcome at Lucille's, to come for a meal or bed for the night. Lucille always made room, because she enjoyed company. In 1955, Lucille and Ray decided to move to Homedale to be near Lucille's family. While there, she became a member of the Eagle Auxiliary and a member of Lodge's drill team and past president. She was also a member of the American Legion and Eastern Star. All her life, Lucille cared for the elderly, starting at the age of 10. She was a senior companion for over 30 years. If you were ill and needed someone to care for you, Lucille was always one of the first to step in and help. In 1959, they moved to Coeur d'Alene, where Lucille owned and operated the Desert Beauty Salon in the Desert Hotel, until it burned down 15 years later. Her hobbies included fishing, camping, hunting, traveling, cooking, sewing and helping others. Lucille loved to travel. Family and friends always joked that her bags were always packed and, at a moment's notice, she could go anywhere with you. She was ready! Lucille traveled to many places, including Alaska and the North Pole, Canada, China, Europe, the Mediterranean, and through the Panama Canal. She and Ray visited all 50 of the United States, and camped in most of them. Lucille is survived by her sons and their wives, Tolbert (Toby) and Candi Applegate of Carlsberg, Wash., Eddie Ray and Becky Applegate, Spirit Lake; granddaughters and their husbands, Brenda Jean and Rex Grace, Coeur d'Alene, Shannon and Jon Longdon, Fountain Valley, Calif.; grandsons Chad and wife Lori Applegate, Kernersville, N.C., and Edward Applegate, Fruitland, Fla.; great-grandchildren Sean Longdin, Tony and Reana Grace, Garrett, Abby and Blake Applegate; many nieces and nephews; plus close friends who will dearly miss her. Her husband, Ray, after 54 years of marriage, died in 1993. Also preceding her in death are her parents, sisters Pauline and Dolly, and brothers Lavel, Dale and J.C. For people who knew the little elderly lady in the pink house on Second and Wallace Avenue in Coeur d'Alene, your friendship was always appreciated. According to Lucille's wishes, she will be cremated and no service will be held at this time. Memorials may be sent to Wishing Star Foundation, 915 W. Second, Suite 3, Spokane. WA 99204. ************************************************************************ Copyright.
