Obituary of BARNETT, GEORGE MISH, SR. 1977 Oconee County, SC

   Westminster--George Mish Barnett of Rt. 3, Oak Grove community, an Oconee 
County farmer and dairyman, died Monday at 89.  He was the husband of Zora 
Butte Barnett.  A native of Oconee County, he was a graduate of Clemson 
College, a schoolteacher at Cleveland, Richland, Coneross and Cross Roads No. 2 
schools, and a former Oconee County School Board trustee.  He pioneered the 
first Brown Swiss cattle in Oconee County, helped start first apple production 
in Long Creek, mapped and typed Oconee County soil, was a leader in soil 
conservation of Oconee County and received numerous awards for his 
contributions.     He was Oconee County's first county agent, began the first 
4-H Club there, and organized Oconee County Foxhunter's Association.  He was a 
former board member of the Farmers Home Administration and Oconee County 
Terracing Association and a member of Pendleton Farmers Society, Oconee County 
Board of Supervisor's, National Youth Association, National Foxhunter's 
Association and Westminster Presbyterian Church.  His first wife was the late 
Hattie Maude Cox Barnett.  Surviving also are sons, George Mish Barnett, Jr. of 
Walhalla, Jesse Albert "Ab"  and Hershel Andy Barnett of Westminster, Jacob 
Henry "Jake" Barnett of Columbia and John Lewis Barnett of Seneca;  daughters, 
Grace Louise McGinn of Fort Mills and Pearl Gladys Sims of Westminster; a 
sister, Maggie Meares of Charlotte, N. C.; 22 grandchildren and 21 
great-grandchildren.  Services will be 3 p. m. Wednesday at Sandifer Funeral 
Home, with burial in East View Cemetery.
