The Rev. Kenneth Ferrell and the Rev. Dale Roddy officiated and burial followed in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Mr. Smith, 74, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at his residence. Born in Westminster, he was a son of the late George W. and Dora Ellen Maxie Smith. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Smith was the owner of Super Exterminating Company. He was a member of Leeds Baptist Church of Chester, where he formerly served as deacon and Sunday school teacher. Survivors include his wife, Joan Jolly Smith; a son, Steve William Smith of Concord; a stepson, Tommy Murdock of Anderson; a stepdaughter, Jackie M. Garrett of Williamston; a brother, Bobby G. Smith of Westminster; two sisters, Hazel Bryant and Mozelle Smith, both of Westminster; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to College Street Baptist Church, 3420 College St., Newberry, S.C. 29108 or to Leeds Baptist Church, 3231 Leeds Road, Carlisle, S.C. 29031.
