Vernon A.M.E. Zion Church. The Rev. J.E. Johnson officiated, the Rev. Moses Lightner assisted and burial followed in the church cemetery. Mr. Clifton, 74, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at his home. Born in Chester on July 9, 1928, he was a son of the late John Clifton and Eunice Tinker Clifton. A member of Mt. Vernon A.M.E. Zion Church, where he was a former choir member, Mr. Clifton attended school in Chester County and was retired from Cone Mill of Carlisle. He was past worshipful master of St. Peter’s Lodge No. 142. Survivors include his wife, Doris Wilmore Clifton; two sons, Curtis Clifton and his wife, Ernestine, of Chester and Jeffery Clifton and his wife, Veronica, of Greenwood; six daughters, Brenda Howze and her husband, Michael, Nadine Bishop and her husband, Ricky, all of Dallas, Texas, and Betty Hall and her husband, Larry, Karen Clifton, Carolyn Isom and her husband, Johnny, and Deloris Strong and her husband, Johnny, all of Chester; a brother, Henry Clifton and his wife, Betty, of Edgemoor; a sister, Matilda Ware of Charlotte; 33 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his caregiver, Maggie C. Peterson of Chester; and his devoted friend, Betty Canty of Chester. He was predeceased by a son, Ernest Clifton Jr.; and a daughter, Debra Denise Clifton.
