TITLE: Edward Halsell Roberts SOURCE: The News and Reporter SUBMITTED BY: The News and Reporter FORMATTED BY: Kim Grissom, Oct 2002 *********************************************************************** Edward Halsell Roberts, 69 SUMTER – The funeral for Mr. Edward Halsell Roberts, a long-time Sumter businessman and Chester County native, was conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday from the First Baptist Church in Sumter with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Jeff Burns, officiating. Burial was in Sumter Cemetery. Mr. Roberts, 69, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at his home following an illness. Born and educated in Chester County, he was a son of the late Mr. John Elbert Roberts Sr. and the late Mrs. Jessie Wagers Roberts. He was the husband of Mrs. Betty Jo Inabinet Roberts. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, Mr. Roberts was an owner and operator of The University Shop, a clothing store in Sumter, for some 30 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sumter, the Shriners and the Palmetto Rotary Club. In addition to his wife, Betty Jo, he is survived by a son, Troy W. Roberts, and his wife, Michelle, of Columbia; a daughter, Mrs. Norma R. Stone and her husband, Greg, of Sumter; two brothers, Gary P. “Press” Roberts Sr. and Kirk L. Roberts, both of Chester; two sisters, Mrs. McHenry “Agnes” Banks of Chester and Mrs. Katherine R. “Kitty” Wright of Seneca; and three grandchildren, Jessica Roberts, Chandler Stone and Kathryn Roberts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Wade Roberts, Troy Roberts and John E. “Johnny” Roberts Jr.; and a sister, Mrs. Jessie Dorothy Stevenson. The family suggests that memorials be made to Tri-County Hospice, 2650-B Hardee Cove, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
