The family will receive friends from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Chisholm Galloway Home for Funerals. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bethesda Temple of St. Joseph Baptist, St. Helena Island, with burial on Warsaw Island. Mr. Knowles was born June 27, 1913, in Burton, a son of Mary Simmons Knowles and Isaac Knowles. He was educated in Beaufort County public schools and was a self-employed commercial fisherman. He served for a number of years on the Trustee Board of the St. Joseph Baptist Church. Mr. Knowles was a resident of Bay View Nursing Center, where he was crowned King in February 2002. He was preceded in death by a son, David Lee Polite; two sisters, Josephine Middleton and Elizabeth Gadson; and a brother, James Simmons. Survivors include his wife, Pecola Frazier Singleton Knowles of Warsaw Island; two daughters, Essie Mae Holmes of St. Helena Island and Brenda Smalls of Sullivan's Island; three sons, Ellis Singleton, Hazie Singleton and Stephen Smalls of St. Helena Island; 28 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. *********************************************************************************************** NOTICE: Printing the files within by non-commerical individuals and libraries is encouraged, as long as all notices and submitter information is included.
