Copeland Funeral Home is in charge. By ASHLEY FLETCHER A Beaufort man died Thursday morning in a three-car accident on S.C. 170 near U.S. 278 in Bluffton, authorities said. Warren H. Eilertson, 71, of 470 Cedar Grove Circle, died at the scene of the accident around 11:40 a.m., said Beaufort County Coroner Curt Copeland. Eilertson, a retired aerospace engineer originally from Washington, D.C., ran last year as a Libertarian candidate for South Carolina's 2nd Congressional District in a special election after the death of Rep. Floyd Spence. Eilertson also ran on the Libertarian ticket for S.C. Senate District 46 seat in 1999. Eilertson's wife, Margaret, 71, a passenger, was flown from the scene and taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where she was listed in good condition Thursday evening, hospital officials said. Ernestine Cooler, 72, of Okatie, was driving eastbound on S.C. 170 when her 2002 Mercury Villager minivan crossed the nine-foot painted median and collided with Eilertson's westbound 1993 Chevrolet, said Lance Cpl. Paul Brouthers of the state Highway Patrol. Cooler's van then collided with a 1992 Ford Ranger driven by Robert Anthony Findley, 24, of Savannah, also headed westbound, Brouthers said. Cooler was listed in good condition Thursday evening at Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics, where she was kept for observation, said hospital spokeswoman Kelly Presnell. Findley was treated and released Thursday, Presnell said. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, Brouthers said, and charges may be pending against Cooler for driving left of the center of the roadway. Beaufort City Councilman Billy Keyserling said he knew Eilertson from local politics. "He was a strong believer in the Libertarian movement," Keyserling said. "He was a very quiet and gentle man."
