TITLE: Mildred Ward Purdy SOURCE: The Post and Courier SUBMITTED BY: The Post and Courier FORMATTED BY: Kim Grissom, Jun 2003 *********************************************************************** PURDY, Mildred Mildred Ward Purdy, widow of Henry Klugh Purdy, Jr., departed this life on Monday, October 15, 2001 at a local Beaufort hospital. Mrs. Purdy was born on April 20, 1917 in Lincolnton, NC. She is the daughter of the late William Henry Ward and Ada Justine Pharr Ward. She was predeceased by her sisters, Willa Ward Shipman of Ridgeland, Mary Lila Ward Smoak of Walterboro and a brother, Granville Geer Ward of Florence. Mrs. Purdy attended Furman University and graduated from The University of South Carolina in 1937, earning a degree in Journalism and French. Her father, Dr. W. H. Ward, Superintendent of Schools in Walterboro for many years, was instrumental in forming the Extension Divisions of USC, becoming Director of The Extension Division in Columbia in 1937 until his retirement in 1957. Mrs. Purdy was the daughter-in-law of Sen. and Mrs. Henry Klugh Purdy (Mary Augusta Ryan) of Ridgeland. Mrs. Purdy and her husband, Klugh, were partners in many businesses in Ridgeland. Blessed with keen and inquiring minds and great fortitude, they were an inspiration to those who knew them, always eager to help their fellowman in any way they could, monetarily or otherwise. Mrs. Purdy was a devoted wife, a loving mother and a doting grandmother, a kind and caring friend to all, both black and white, in Jasper County and beyond. She is survived by a daughter, Eleanor Ward Purdy Tillman and her husband, Bobby of Beaufort, and a son, Henry Klugh Purdy, III (Rock) and his wife, Lyn, of Hilton Head Island. Also, five grandchildren: Sen. Chauncey Klugh Gregory and his wife, Sherri, of Lancaster, Alice Gray Gregory, Richard Evans Richards Gregory, and Roxanne Eleanor Purdy, all of Charleston, and Katherine Ryan Purdy of Hilton Head Island. Surviving also are two great-grandchildren, Marshall Klugh Purdy Gregory and Ellen Gray Gregory of Lancaster and several nieces and nephews. She held a special place in her heart for each one. Funeral services will be held at Saint Paul's United Methodist Church in Ridgeland at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2001, with burial in Grahamville Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Sauls Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 16, 2001, from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Pallbearers for Mrs. Purdy will be: Tommy Scoggins, Ken Bush, Daniel Henderson, Ralph Bailey, Tom Thomas, George Patterson. Honorary Pallbearers, Patrick Morley, Sherwood Fender, Henry Tillman, Thaire Daley, Lee Dasher, Walter Morgan. The family requests that remembrances be made to charities of choice.
