Well known business and community leader J. B. McGuirt died Wednesday, October 24, 2001. He had been actively engaged in the farming, construction, real estate and insurance business in Kershaw County and Camden for almost 70 years. He was born in the Van Wyke Community of Lancaster County on February 10, 1914, the son of William Price McGuirt and Flonnie Walters McGuirt. He was educated in the public schools of Lancaster and Kershaw Counties. He moved to Camden, S.C. at the age of 16 where he met and later married Annie Blake Kelly on October 21, 1934. They had three children: James Blake McGuirt, Charles William McGuirt, and Elizabeth Ann McGuirt Ellis. Annie Blake died February 2, 1982, and on March 3, 1984 he married Jean Twitty Marshall, widow of G. F. Marshall, Jr. Jean has two daughters, Cecilia Johnson of Easley and Martha Wyrick of Camden. Mr. McGuirt was a past President of the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the advisory board of the First National Bank of South Carolina at Camden and on the advisory board of the Kershaw County Memorial Hospital Board, part of that time as Chairman. Other activities included the Kiwanis Club, the Golden K Club, and President of the Quaker Cemetery Association. He was a member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, where he had served on the Board of Stewards and as a Sunday School Teacher. He was a Past President of the Camden Shrine Club and a Past Master of Kershaw, Lodge 29. In addition to many other state offices, he was installed as Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of A.F.M. of South Carolina in 1979, and served two consecutive terms. In 1981 his family was chosen as the S.C. Family of the year. In addition to the family members mentioned above, he is survived by two sisters, Peggy Clyburn and Olive Lee of Camden, seven grandchildren, five step grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one step great-grandchild. He was predeceased by a brother Lawson and a sister, Willene Mayer Rigdon. Funeral services will be held at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church at 3 o'clock, on Saturday, October 27, 2001, with burial at Quaker Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Kershaw Lodge #29 Temple located on Highway 97, Friday, October 26, from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Kershaw Lodge 29 Building Fund, c/o Sam Walden, P.O.
