Wendell CADES - Mr. Lawrence Wendell McElveen, 73, died Wednesday, October 24, 2001, in a Lake City hospital after an illness. Mr. McElveen was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late J. Ralph and Jessie Smith McElveen. He was a graduate of Hebron High School and attended Clemson University. He retired from Life of Georgia as Staff Manager after 37 hears and retired as Williamsburg County Magistrate also after 37 years. He was a life-long member of Hebron United Methodist Church where he had held various offices in the church over the years. He was chairman of the Hebron Recreation Committee since its inception, a former member of the Lake City Lions Club, member of Prosser's Prayer Breakfast Club, Methodist Men's Club of Hebron United Methodist Church, Hardee's Afternoon Coffee Club, and an Army veteran. He was married first to the late Anease Barrineau McElveen. Survivors include his wife, Ellen Shaw McElveen of Cades; two sons, Roger W. (Nancy) McElveen and Charles E. McElveen, both of Cades; two daughters, Julie (Charles) Newell of Myrtle Beach and Barbara (Steve) Beerer of Walhalla; five grandchildren, Jamie, Chris and Chelsey McElveen, Amanda Rylander and Cy Floyd; two sisters, Elena (Francis) McElveen of Olanta and Jean (Ralph) Abreo of Aiken; three nieces; three step-children, Michael (Jackie) Shaw of Conway, Pam (Frank) Wilburn of Stone Mountain, GA, Charles (Joettee) Shaw of Anchorage, Alaska; three step-grandchildren, Brian Shaw of Conway, Margie Norwood of Stone Mountain, GA, and Trey Norwood of Marietta, GA. He was predeceased by two grandchildren, Jay McElveen and Christy Floyd. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 27, 2001, in the Hebron United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hebron United Methodist Church Permanent Cemetery Fund, 2332 Hebron Road, Cades, SC 29518. The family will have visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge of arrangements.
