TITLE: Marilyn Swicegood Mays SOURCE: The Post and Courier SUBMITTED BY: The Post and Courier FORMATTED BY: Kim Grissom, Jun 2003 *********************************************************************** MAYS, Marilyn GOLDSBORO - Mrs. Marilyn Swicegood Mays, 78, of 408 Taylor Place, died Friday at her home.A native of Charleston, SC and reared in Summerville, SC, she was the daughter of the late John Willis Swicegood and Caroline Bell Swicegood and was married for 55 years to the late Dr. Oliver Aiken Mays. Mrs. Mays attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia and became a registered nurse at the School of Nursing of the Medical University of South Carolina. She later served as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Nurses Corps. Mrs. Mays served with her husband in places such as Paris, France, Wiesbaden, Germany and Nome, Alaska and many other bases in the United States. After moving to Goldsboro, Mrs. Mays became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she was involved with the Sanctuary Choir and the Susanne Wesley Circle. She was also a member of the Retired Officers Wives Association, the Gardenettes Garden Club, the Neuse River Foundation, the AMA Alliance, Inc. and a life member of the Medical University of South Carolina Alumni Association.Funeral services will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Rev. Charles Morrison officiating. Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia, SC.Mrs. Mays is survived by her sons, Roy Aiken Mays, II and Charlotte of Jamestown, SC and Roger Willis Mays and his wife, Virginia Ann of Morehead City; sister, Imogene Williams of Summerville, SC; brothers, Roger Mason Swicegood of Summerville, SC and Daniel Swicegood of Greenville, NC; grandchildren, Rob, Will, Erin and Geoff; and a special friend, John Malfy of Goldsboro.Mrs. Mays was preceded in death by an infant son, a daughter, Janet Marilyn Mays, a sister, Carrie Bell Schultz and brothers, George Wesley Swicegood, John Willis Swicegood, Jr. and Edwin Franklin Swicegood.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530.Honorary pallbearers will be the Wayne County Medical Society. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
