(Published Oct 23, 2001) LONG, SR., Kenneth Kenneth Howard Long, Sr., died October 22, 2001, at his home. Born February 11, 1917, he was the son of John Douglas Long, Jr., and Julia Rebecca (Thomas) Long. During WWII, he was an electrician at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. On July 3, 1944, he married "the prettiest girl in the shipyard," Myrtle Martha Dantzler. A 1954 news article praised his "versatility" and "foresight." He retired in 1972 as Supervisory Engineering Technician. He enjoyed hunting and loved dogs. A charter member of Deer Park Baptist Church, he serve for decades as treasurer. He was known for his honesty, generosity, compassion, and willingness to help others; the children knew him for his gifts of chewing gum. Mr. Long is survived by his beloved wife, by his children, Julia Long Towles and Kenneth Long, Jr., and wife, Theresa, by his grandchildren, Louis Towles, III, Angela Mundi (Long) Moss and husband Curry Moss, Rebecca Marie (Towles) Slight and husband William Sligh, and by his brothers, Lewis Long, Francis Long, Thomas Long, and Robert Long. Funeral services are 11 a.m., Thursday, Deer Park Baptist Church. Interment, Riverview Memorial Park. Friends may call at Stuhr's Greenridge Road Chapel, Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m. Any memorials in Mr. Long's name may be given to his church, Deer Park Baptist Church, 8875 University Blvd., North Charleston, S.C. 29406.
