TITLE: Charles Loyd Jackson SOURCE: The Post and Courier SUBMITTED BY: The Post and Courier FORMATTED BY: Kim Grissom, Jun 2003 *********************************************************************** JACKSON, Charles Charles Loyd Jackson, 87, of Macungie, died Sunday, September 23, in Lehigh Center, Macungie. He was the husband of Dorothy A. (Butler) Jackson, who died in 1992. The relatives and friends of Charles Loyd Jackson are invited to attend his memorial services at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, Thursday, October 4, 2001, at 1 o'clock. Friends may call at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, one hour prior to the service. Mr. Jackson was an Army Infantry Colonel before retiring in 1968 as assistant chief of staff (civil affairs), U.S. Army Pacific. He was a battalion commander in the 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, landing on Utah Beach at Normandy on D-Day. He participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland Ardennes/Alsace and Central Europe campaigns. He was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross, a Silver Star, three Bronze Stars, a Legion of Merit Award, a Croix de Gurerre with Palm, a Belgian Fourragere of Leopold, a Purple Heart and other campaign awards and foreign decorations. He was commanding officer of the Stuttgart and Heidelburg Military Government Detachment in Germany 1945-47. He served as senior adviser to the Japanese 1st Division, 1952-55, and to the Chinese Nationalist 1st Field Army, 1958-60. He commanded the 26th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division, 1956-58, and was the senior advisor of organization and training in the military assistance advisory group, Vietnam, in the early stages of the Vietnam War. He was a 1938 graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., and did post graduate studies at the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolkd, Va., Army War College, Carlisle, Cumberland County, and George Washington University, Washington, D.C. Born in Worthington, Mo., he was a son of the late Robert R. and Goldie (Cooley) Jackson. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Mount Pleasant, S.C. Survivors include, son, Charles L. Jackson, II, of Macungie; sister, Mary Crocker of Mount Pleasant; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.
