Mrs. Coward was born November 18, 1913 in Coward, SC, the daughter of Capers A. Matthews and Alice Cockfield Matthews. She was a charter member of North Charleston United Methodist Church. She retired from Condons Department Stores. She was Past Queen with the Daughters of the Nile and Past Royal Matron with the Order of Amaranth. She is survived by two sons: C. Ronald Coward of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Gary Matthews Coward of Charleston, SC; three grandchildren: John Matthews Coward, C. Ronald Coward, Jr. and Elizabeth Alice Coward; two great-grandchildren: Clauson Ronald Coward, III and Addie Bridgham Coward; one sister: Cleola M. Moody of Edgefield, SC; two brothers: Billy G. Matthews of Florence, SC and Reverend Thomas F. Matthews of Manning, SC; three sisters-in-law: Mrs. Randolph (Christine) Matthews, Mrs. Ashton (Foye) Matthews and Mrs. Thelma Coward Buddin.
